Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the consuming application actually invoke InputSanitizer.sanitizePath(inputPath, basePath) from the network-ai/security export as its terminal path validation, with the attacker controlling inputPath and basePath set to the sandbox root. The specific triggering condition is a sibling directory whose leading component shares a string prefix with the base directory name (e.g. base /data/project with sibling /data/project-evil or /data/project2), supplied in absolute or relative (../project-evil/...) form - that sibling path must exist (or, for the write primitive, be creatable) on the filesystem for a useful operation to occur. Limiting factors: classic ../../../etc/passwd traversal is still correctly rejected, so only prefix-sharing sibling layouts are exploitable; the demonstrated primitive is file read/directory listing (write is argued by the advisory as an expected use of the helper but is not demonstrated); and the PR:N/AV:N reachability is only realized if the consumer exposes the helper to untrusted network input without its own authentication or anchored re-check.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7 is driven by the most favorable attacker metrics (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) with high confidentiality impact (VC:H), which on paper reads as a high-priority remote, unauthenticated issue. However, these metrics describe the helper in isolation: InputSanitizer.sanitizePath() is a library validation function, so whether an attacker can actually reach it unauthenticated over the network, and with attacker-controlled inputPath, depends entirely on how the consuming application exposes it - a fact the CVSS vector cannot capture. Against that, the softer signals point to lower urgency: there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score was provided (so exploitation probability is unquantified here), and vuln.today's decision label is this_week rather than act_now/emergency. A public PoC reference exists in the GHSA advisory, but it reproduces the containment logic in a standalone script rather than exploiting a live deployment, so it demonstrates the defect, not weaponized in-the-wild use. Net: this is a genuine, well-evidenced path-containment bug with a high nominal score, but its real-world priority is moderated by a niche single-author npm package footprint, the absence of active-exploitation and EPSS signals, and the fact that exploitability is consumer-dependent. One signal conflict must be flagged: the CVE/description state a fix in 5.15.5 while the GHSA advisory body states security.ts was never modified and no release addresses this code path - fix availability is contradictory and should be verified with the vendor before relying on an upgrade.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An application uses network-ai's exported InputSanitizer.sanitizePath() as the terminal check to confine file operations to a sandbox base such as /data/project, and accepts a user-supplied path. An attacker submits a sibling path whose directory name shares a string prefix with the base (e.g. /data/project-evil/secret.txt or ../project-evil/secret.txt); the unanchored startsWith check passes, and the caller reads or lists files outside the intended base directory. A public PoC reference in the advisory reproduces this bypass logic, though it is not verified as working exploit code against a live product.

AnalysisAIv1 – Nov 02, 2026

Path traversal in Network-AI through 5.15.4 lets an attacker who controls the path passed to InputSanitizer.sanitizePath() escape the intended sandbox by supplying a sibling directory whose name shares the base directory's string prefix, enabling file read or directory listing outside the base; the advisory argues write outside the base is also possible, but that primitive is not demonstrated. The flaw requires a consuming application to use this helper as its terminal path validation with attacker-influenced inputPath and a basePath set to the sandbox root, and it is limited to prefix-sharing sibling layouts because classic ../../../ traversal is still rejected. The advisory includes a public proof-of-concept reproduction script, not verified as working exploit code; no CISA KEV active-exploitation status is indicated in the supplied data, and the independent assessment scores confidentiality impact as high with no integrity or availability impact.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Network-AI to 5.15.5, the fixed version listed by the advisory, and verify the deployed npm package version. Advisory references are https://github.com/Jovancoding/Network-AI/security/advisories/GHSA-5mm5-4mh4-6gm6 and https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/network-ai-before-5.15.5-path-traversal-via-inputsanitizer-sanitizepath. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, the advisory's suggested code fix is to make sanitizePath enforce a separator-anchored boundary with resolvedPath === resolvedBase || resolvedPath.startsWith(resolvedBase + sep), importing sep from path, and to test both absolute and relative sibling-prefix inputs; consumers should apply the same separator-anchored re-check after full resolution before any filesystem operation. Restricting untrusted callers from supplying inputPath to this helper reduces exposure, but a consumer-side prefix check without a separator anchor does not close the issue.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-22 path traversal in a published Node.js path validation helper. InputSanitizer.sanitizePath() normalizes and resolves the input against basePath, then applies only resolvedPath.startsWith(resolvedBase) at security.ts:387 without appending path.sep, so a base such as /data/project is treated as a prefix match for the unrelated sibling /data/project-evil or /data/project2. The package's companion lib/agent-runtime.ts check uses the separator-anchored form resolved === base || resolved.startsWith(base + sep), but security.ts does not import sep and never applies that boundary. Normalization does not remove the escape because sibling paths contain no dot segments or redundant separators to normalize away, and relative forms such as ../project-evil/secret.txt join to the same absolute sibling path. Classic ../../../etc/passwd traversal is still rejected, confirming the defect is specifically the missing separator anchor. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector is AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N (8.7); the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N. CPE data identifies jovancoding:network-ai in the affected product line.

DescriptionCVE.org

Network-AI before 5.15.5 contains a path traversal vulnerability in InputSanitizer.sanitizePath() that allows attackers to escape the base directory using sibling-directory paths. Attackers can supply paths whose directory name shares a string prefix with the base, bypassing the unanchored startsWith check to read, list, or write files outside the sandbox.

Technical POC Analysis

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2026-120313 is a high-severity path traversal flaw in Network-AI through version 5.15.4 that could allow an attacker to read files outside an intended sandbox when the library is used as the final path validation layer. Applications that expose this helper to attacker-influenced paths-such as those handling user-supplied filenames or directory inputs-are at risk of confidential data exposure.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Since no vendor-released patch is available, implement additional path canonicalization and enforce strict directory containment (e.g., resolve the full path and verify it begins with the base directory followed by a path separator) before any file operation; restrict attacker control over inputPath; review and harden all consuming applications that rely on InputSanitizer.sanitizePath() as their sole validation layer; and monitor for an official fix.
