MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires (1) a valid authenticated LORIS account - the attacker is already logged in, but lacks the imaging_browser edit permission that the frontend enforces (PR:L), and (2) the LORIS API to be enabled on the deployment. When both hold, the attacker can edit imaging data through the API regardless of the imaging_browser edit restrictions, against versions 22.0.0 through 28.0.1 (fixed in 27.0.4 and 28.0.2). Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: valid credentials are mandatory (no unauthenticated path), the impact is confined to imaging_browser data editing, and deployments that no longer use the API can disable it per the vendor workaround to remove the endpoint entirely. The vendor fix (upgrading to 27.0.4/28.0.2) is the complete remediation. |
| Impact | This is a missing-authorization flaw (CWE-862) in the LORIS imaging_browser API: the API path does not enforce the frontend edit-permission checks, so any authenticated API caller can modify imaging data they should not be able to edit. The supplied CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L, 6.3 Medium) indicates network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation requiring low privileges (PR:L) and no user interaction - consistent with an authenticated-user authorization gap rather than a remote-unauthenticated issue. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), and no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no working exploit code were provided, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation. The references are patch/commit/advisory links (a fix PR and commit), not a proof-of-concept exploit. Net: a genuine but moderate access-control issue whose real-world risk is bounded by the requirement for an existing authenticated account and an enabled API; it is a scheduled-remediation priority, not a drop-everything emergency. Note the mechanism is well-described (authorization not checked on the API editing path), so there is no conflict between the vector and the description; the main unknowns are exploitation probability (no EPSS) and in-the-wild activity (no KEV). |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker holding a legitimate but under-privileged LORIS account - one without imaging_browser edit rights - authenticates to the API and issues requests to the imaging_browser editing endpoint to alter imaging data (e.g., QC status or imaging records) that the web UI would have blocked. Because AC:L and no user interaction are required, the request succeeds directly once authenticated. No public exploit code was identified; only the vendor fix commit and PR are public. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026
Missing authorization checks in the LORIS imaging_browser API allow any authenticated API caller to modify imaging data without holding the edit permission that the imaging_browser frontend enforces. The flaw affects LORIS from 22.0.0 prior to 27.0.4 and from 28.0.0 prior to 28.0.2, and only matters on deployments where the API is enabled and the caller already has a valid account - the independent assessment scores it PR:L with integrity-only impact (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N) rather than the broader CNA vector. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis; the vendor has released fixes in 27.0.4 and 28.0.2, and sites that no longer use the API can disable it to eliminate the endpoint.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to LORIS 27.0.4 or 28.0.2, which contain the authorization fix - release artifacts are at https://github.com/aces/Loris/releases/tag/v27.0.4 and https://github.com/aces/Loris/releases/tag/v28.0.2 and upgrading is the complete remediation per the vendor and independent assessment. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the vendor's stated workaround is to disable the API on LORIS projects that were previously using it but no longer need it, which removes access to the vulnerable endpoint entirely; the trade-off is that any remaining API consumers, scripts, or integrations will stop working, so disable it only where the API is genuinely unused. Sites that must keep the API enabled but cannot yet upgrade should treat valid LORIS credentials as sufficient to tamper with imaging data and restrict API reachability accordingly, accepting that this reduces legitimate access. No vendor-released patch alternative or backport is described in the available sources beyond the two fixed releases.

LORIS (Longitudinal Online Research and Imaging System, CPE cpe:2.3:a:aces:loris) is a self-hosted PHP/MySQL web application for neuroimaging study and project management. Its imaging_browser module gates editing of imaging data on module-level permissions in the web frontend, but the corresponding API endpoints under modules/api/php/ are a separate code path that did not repeat those checks. The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the API handler authenticates the session and then performs the write without verifying that the caller holds the imaging_browser edit permission or belongs to the relevant project. The upstream fix in pull request 10531 adds exactly that gate - for the visit QC API endpoint it retrieves the user, resolves the visit's project ID, and returns a JSON Forbidden response unless the user has the imaging_browser_qc permission and a project membership match, alongside similar permission checks added to other AJAX/module handlers in the same changeset. The trigger conditions are therefore an enabled API, an authenticated session, and a request to the imaging_browser API mutation endpoint; no specific memory-safety or timing primitive is involved.

LORIS (Longitudinal Online Research and Imaging System) is a self-hosted web application that provides data- and project-management for neuroimaging research. In versions from 22.0.0 prior to 27.0.4 and from 28.0.0 prior to 28.0.2, the API for the imaging_browser module permits edits to imaging data without checking the frontend permissions that restrict editing in Imaging Browser. An authenticated API caller can therefore modify imaging data without the required edit authorization. Deployments that no longer use the API can disable it to remove access to this endpoint. This issue is fixed in versions 27.0.4 and 28.0.2.
