| Exploitation Conditions | No authentication, special configuration, or user interaction is required to reach the vulnerable endpoint: GET /api/v1/index/{solrField}/spatial/search is unauthenticated (PR:N) and the region parameter is concatenated raw into the Solr query. However, meaningful data disclosure is limited by deployment specifics - the target must hold access-restricted georeferenced records, and the exposed fields are fixed by a server-side allow-list and the deployment's configured geomap metadata templates (coordinates, PI, and rendered label metadata only). Non-georeferenced records and the unstored full-text field cannot be reached by this vector, and the sibling heatmap endpoint is unaffected because it uses SolrJ's structured setRegionQuery. Exploitation is further limited to goobi-viewer-core versions >= 22.04 and < 26.05. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity access-control bypass, not a high-impact priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N = 5.3 Medium) is internally consistent with the evidence: the endpoint GET /api/v1/index/{solrField}/spatial/search is unauthenticated (PR:N) and reachable over the network with no user interaction, and the only impact is bounded confidentiality (C:L) - disclosure of metadata for access-restricted georeferenced records, with no integrity or availability effect. The vuln.today Decision label is this_month, consistent with a real-but-not-urgent issue. No KEV listing and no EPSS score are present in the input, so there is no signal of active or probable exploitation; the references are a vendor advisory, a fix commit, and a release tag - none is a working exploit, so no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The main reason this is not a top priority despite being unauthenticated and network-reachable is the tightly bounded impact: the returned field set is fixed by a server-side allow-list and the deployment's geomap metadata templates (not attacker-chosen), only georeferenced records are affected, and non-georeferenced records plus the unstored full-text field are never exposed. No signals conflict here; the limiting factor is the narrow data exposure rather than any access barrier. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A remote, unauthenticated attacker sends a GET request to the spatial search endpoint with a region parameter containing Solr local-param syntax (e.g. {!parent ...} or {!join ...}) or boolean operators, which is concatenated unescaped into the Solr query. The injected syntax neutralises the access-condition filter, causing access-restricted georeferenced records to match and return their coordinates, document identifier (PI), and allow-listed metadata. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, though the fix commit and advisory describe the mechanism in detail. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 23, 2026
Unauthenticated Solr query injection in the Goobi viewer spatial search endpoint (GET /api/v1/index/{solrField}/spatial/search) lets remote attackers slip local-param syntax and boolean operators through the region parameter and bypass the access-condition filter, exposing metadata for access-restricted georeferenced records. Affected deployments are goobi-viewer-core from 22.04 up to but not including 26.05; disclosure is bounded to the map-feature payload the server renders - geographic coordinates, the document PI, and the metadata values placed into each feature's label/entities by the deployment's geomap templates - because the returned field set comes from a server-side allow-list, while non-georeferenced records and the unstored full-text field are unreachable this way and the sibling heatmap endpoint is unaffected. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the vendor issued a patch in 26.05.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 26.05 - upgrade goobi-viewer-core to version 26.05 or later; the fixing commit is 46fb8759caa91b5ba9f0c387e5a0d0d3875bf633 and the tagged release is https://github.com/intranda/goobi-viewer-core/releases/tag/v26.05, with the advisory at https://github.com/intranda/goobi-viewer-core/security/advisories/GHSA-v5h4-qrx3-qg3h. The patch enforces a WKT allow-list on the region parameter, rejects Solr field names that do not match the expected pattern, and strips non-whitelisted Solr local-params from the composed query, so any fork or backport should carry all three changes to fully close the bypass. Operators upgrading past this release should also note the accompanying change that deprecates submitting the web API token as a URL query parameter in favour of the token header, with the legacy fallback scheduled for removal on 2027-05-28, and should migrate integrations accordingly to avoid breakage.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Goobi viewer is a Java web application (JAX-RS REST layer, maven io.goobi.viewer:viewer-core) that renders digitised holdings and uses Apache Solr as its search backend. The flaw is a query-injection class issue (CWE-89, with the advisory also tagging CWE-943): the v1 index resource takes the caller-supplied region parameter and concatenates it into a Solr query string without escaping, without stripping Solr local-params, and without runtime schema enforcement - the OpenAPI @Schema(pattern=...) annotation is documentation only and is never applied at the JAX-RS layer. Because the injected fragment is placed before the access-condition suffix, an attacker can supply Solr local-param constructs such as {!parent ...} or {!join ...} plus boolean operators so that access-restricted georeferenced documents satisfy the composed query. The commit for 26.05 adds a JAX-RS-level WKT allow-list pattern for the region value (letters limited to those appearing in POINT/POLYGON/MULTIPOLYGON/TO, thereby excluding braces, wildcards and colons), validates solrField against a Solr field-name pattern, and routes the assembled filterQuery through SolrTools.cleanUpQuery to strip non-whitelisted local-params. The same advisory notes the heatmap endpoint passes the region value to SolrJ's structured setRegionQuery JSON-facet parameter instead of string concatenation, so it is not affected by this vector; the release commit also deprecates passing the web API token as a URL query parameter in favour of the token HTTP header, with a stated fallback removal date of 2027-05-28.

The Goobi viewer is a web application that allows digitised material to be displayed in a web browser. From version 22.04 to before version 26.05, the unauthenticated REST endpoint GET /api/v1/index/{solrField}/spatial/search concatenates the user-supplied region query parameter directly into a Solr query string with no escaping, no local-param stripping, and no runtime schema enforcement (the OpenAPI @Schema(pattern=...) annotation is documentation-only at the JAX-RS layer). An attacker can inject Solr local-param syntax ({!parent ...}, {!join ...}) and boolean operators to make access-restricted georeferenced records match the query, bypassing the access-condition filter. This issue has been patched in version 26.05.
