| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that webapi.authorization.token is left unconfigured (empty) so that Configuration.getWebApiToken returns an empty string, which AuthorizationFilter then matches against an empty ?token= value. This is a non-default state: the official install guide generates a UUID token, so a guide-following install is NOT exploitable - the condition most often arises on test/staging/CI installs or container images that skip the bootstrap step. The attacker additionally needs network reachability to a @AuthorizationBinding-protected REST endpoint; the client-secret read and GRANTED-access escalation further require the client-applications feature to be in use. The limiting factor is entirely this non-default unset-token configuration (the basis for AC:H); no authentication or user interaction is required once that condition holds. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditional authorization-bypass (CWE-287, with CWE-1392 'use of default credentials' per the GHSA advisory) that only matters on a subset of deployments. The input CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N = 7.4) correctly captures the core tension: the flaw is network-reachable and unauthenticated (PR:N), but AC:H reflects that it is NOT exploitable against a guide-following install - the official install guide generates a UUID token, so the empty-token precondition is a non-default state. The vendor explicitly attributes AC:H to this: the bug 'most often surfaces on test/staging/CI installs or container images that skip the bootstrap step.' No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no PoC/exploit reference were supplied, so exploitation probability signals are absent rather than low - do not read the missing EPSS as evidence of low interest. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a real-but-bounded priority. Net: treat as a priority for anyone running Goobi viewer in automated/containerized/CI contexts where bootstrap may be skipped; lower urgency for guide-following production installs that already set a token. No conflicting signals in the CVSS vs. description - both agree on network, unauthenticated, config-dependent access. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An operator deploys Goobi viewer from a container image or CI/staging setup that skipped the bootstrap step, leaving webapi.authorization.token unset. A remote, unauthenticated attacker who can reach the REST API sends a request to any @AuthorizationBinding-protected endpoint with an empty token value (e.g. ?token=), which the filter accepts, and then issues DELETE /api/v1/records/{pi} to delete Solr index records or reads operational/client-secret data. No public exploit was identified in the supplied data, though the trivial trigger (an empty token parameter) requires no specialized tooling. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 23, 2026
Goobi Viewer deployments that leave webapi.authorization.token unset accept an empty ?token= value on every @AuthorizationBinding-protected REST endpoint, allowing an unauthenticated caller to invoke protected API methods. The official install guide generates a UUID token, so only installations that skipped that bootstrap step - typically test, staging, CI, or container images - are exposed; on those, an attacker can delete Solr records, read operational statistics and cache data, and, where the client-applications feature is used, read client secrets and grant a client access to restricted content. The issue is fixed in version 26.05, and no public exploit was identified at the time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Goobi Viewer Core to version 26.05, which contains commit 419dc7320e1ec45e83dcb440871b50181f04716d; the release is at https://github.com/intranda/goobi-viewer-core/releases/tag/v26.05 and the advisory at https://github.com/intranda/goobi-viewer-core/security/advisories/GHSA-4qpq-f4r6-7cc6. For deployments that cannot update immediately, set webapi.authorization.token to a high-entropy random value such as a UUID, as recommended in the advisory; doing so removes the empty-token match that enables the bypass. Note that the patched filter rejects all REST API access while webapi.authorization.token is blank, so the token must be configured for @AuthorizationBinding-protected endpoints to remain usable after upgrading. Where the unset-token state existed, the advisory notes that DELETE /api/v1/records/{pi} could remove Solr records and recovery requires re-indexing, while client-applications deployments could have exposed clientIdentifier values and access-status changes.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Goobi Viewer Core is a Java web application whose REST API is guarded by an AuthorizationFilter. Configuration.getWebApiToken returns an empty string when the webapi.authorization.token property has not been configured, and the filter compares the request-supplied token - from the token header or the ?token= query parameter - directly against that configured value without first rejecting an empty configured token. When both values are empty, the comparison succeeds and the request is treated as authorized. The root cause is CWE-287 (improper authentication), with the GHSA also classifying it as CWE-1392 (use of default credentials); the practical prerequisite is a non-default deployment state in which the token was never set. The CVSS vector rates this AC:H for that reason: guide-following installations generate a UUID token and are not exposed. The upstream fix in commit 419dc7320e1ec45e83dcb440871b50181f04716d adds a blank check on the configured token before any comparison and rejects requests when the configured token is blank; accompanying unit tests cover empty query-parameter tokens and empty configured tokens.

2DescriptionCVE.org
The Goobi viewer is a web application that allows digitised material to be displayed in a web browser. Prior to version 26.05, Configuration.getWebApiToken returns the empty string when webapi.authorization.token is not configured. AuthorizationFilter compares the supplied token against this default without first checking that the configured token is non-empty. A request to any @AuthorizationBinding-protected endpoint with an empty ?token= value is therefore accepted. This issue has been patched in version 26.05.
Technical POC Analysis
Bug class: improper authentication (CWE-287), with the advisory additionally tagging default credentials (CWE-1392).
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
Goobi Viewer deployments with an unset API authorization token allow unauthenticated access to protected endpoints, enabling data deletion, information disclosure, and potential content access. Organizations running test, staging, CI, or containerized instances are most affected, and leadership should prioritize identifying and securing these environments to prevent data integrity and confidentiality incidents.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigation: set a unique, strong token for webapi.authorization.token in all Goobi Viewer configurations, and restrict network access to affected endpoints where feasible.
