Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires the mlx5e driver bound to an NVIDIA/Mellanox ConnectX interface running an AF_XDP socket in zero-copy mode on a striding RQ, plus a kernel XSK buffer allocation failure (-ENOMEM) during MPWQE refill so that actual_wq_head is not advanced and a later NAPI poll retries the same WQE over slots still marked releasable. Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: this AF_XDP zero-copy striding-RQ setup is non-default and specific to mlx5 hardware, establishing the XSK socket requires privileged/CAP_NET_RAW-level setup, and the defect only manifests under memory exhaustion hitting the error/retry path (the reporter reproduced it only through forced fault injection across 1,575,262 allocation failures).

Impact

The input CVSS of 9.8 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) overstates real-world risk and conflicts with the mechanism described. The description is a kernel memory-safety defect (double-free / use-after-free of XSK buffers via xsk_buff_free on stale pointers) that is only reachable when AF_XDP zero-copy is configured on a striding RQ on an mlx5e (NVIDIA/Mellanox ConnectX) NIC AND the kernel hits an XSK allocation failure (-ENOMEM) during MPWQE refill - i.e. it depends on local, privileged, non-default configuration plus memory pressure, not clean remote-unauthenticated reach. Supporting signals point the same way: EPSS is 0.22% (12th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no PoC or exploit reference appears in the input (no public exploit identified at time of analysis). The one escalating signal is the vuln.today 'act_now' decision label, which conflicts with the low EPSS and absent KEV/PoC; treat act_now as the governing urgency for patching, but understand the low EPSS/no-KEV combination indicates this is not a currently exploited, mass-scannable issue. Net: verify the attack vector with the vendor - CVSS claims AV:N/PR:N but the description implies locally-configured AF_XDP plus an -ENOMEM error path, so the true exploitability is far narrower than 9.8 suggests.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a host using AF_XDP zero-copy on a striding receive queue of an mlx5e NIC, a local actor who can drive the interface into memory exhaustion causes XSK buffer allocation to fail with -ENOMEM during an MPWQE refill; the WQE is retried on a later NAPI poll and the already-released XSK buffers are freed a second time through stale pointers after they have been reallocated from the pool. The resulting kernel double-free/use-after-free can corrupt kernel memory, typically leading to a crash and potentially further corruption. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis; triggering depends on forcing the specific allocation-failure retry path (the vendor reproduced it only via fault injection).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 24, 2026

Stale AF_XDP buffer release in the Linux kernel mlx5e driver can free XSK frames twice when an MPWQE refill on a striding RQ returns -ENOMEM and a later NAPI poll retries the same WQE, potentially reaching XSK buffers that have already been reallocated. The issue affects systems using NVIDIA/Mellanox ConnectX hardware with AF_XDP zero-copy on mlx5e; the assessed vector is local, high complexity, low privileges (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N), so the raw CVSS 9.8 network score overstates practical risk. Vendor patches are available, EPSS is 0.22% (12th percentile), and no public exploit is identified at time of analysis.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The mlx5e driver implements AF_XDP zero-copy receive using a striding RQ and multi-packet WQEs. In this path, XSK buffers are normally released only after an MPWQE is refilled; if mlx5e_xsk_alloc_rx_mpwqe() fails with -ENOMEM, actual_wq_head is not advanced, so a later NAPI poll retries the same WQE. mlx5e_free_rx_mpwqe() leaves released slots marked releasable, so the retry can call xsk_buff_free() through stale pointers after frames have returned to the XSK pool and been reallocated. The fix sets all skip_release_bitmap bits in the common error path, matching mlx5e_alloc_rx_mpwqe(), making retries idempotent without changing the success path. No CWE is assigned in the input; CPE identifies linux:linux, and EUVD lists fixes in 6.6.160, 6.12.113, 6.18.57, 7.2.11 and 7.3 plus commit-range references.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/mlx5e: Prevent stale XSK buffer release on MPWQE refill retry

With AF_XDP on a striding RQ, mlx5e defers releasing XSK buffers until an MPWQE is refilled. If XSK allocation then returns -ENOMEM, actual_wq_head is not advanced and a later NAPI poll retries the same WQE.

mlx5e_free_rx_mpwqe() leaves each released slot marked as releasable. On retry it can therefore call xsk_buff_free() again through stale pointers after the frames have returned to the XSK pool and been reallocated.

Set all skip_release_bitmap bits in the common error path of mlx5e_xsk_alloc_rx_mpwqe(). This matches mlx5e_alloc_rx_mpwqe(). A successful allocation already clears the bitmap after replacing every buffer, so retries become idempotent without changing the success path.

Fault injection forced three consecutive failures for one selected MPWQE. Both an early allocation failure and a partial 8-of-16-buffer unwind released the original 16 XSK buffers only once. Each error left a full bitmap, the following NAPI retry skipped the release, and a later successful allocation cleared it. A 20-second AF_XDP zero-copy pressure run exercised 1,575,262 buffer allocation failures without invalid descriptors, WQE errors, or kernel warnings.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A critical vulnerability in the Linux kernel's mlx5e driver for NVIDIA/Mellanox ConnectX network adapters could allow a local attacker to trigger a use-after-free condition, potentially leading to system crashes or privilege escalation. While the raw CVSS score is 9.8, the practical exploitation requires local access and high complexity, and no public exploit has been observed. Organizations using this hardware in high-performance networking environments should prioritize patching to prevent potential disruption or compromise.
