| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Roundcube session (valid webmail login), consistent with CVSS PR:L - this is the primary limiting factor and confines abuse to account holders, compromised accounts, or self-service/guest-account deployments. The attacker must control the References, In-Reply-To, Message-ID, or From request parameters of the message-send (rcmail_sendmail headers_input) flow and include CRLF/newline characters; the Subject and Organization headers are NOT viable because they were already sanitized before this fix. Affected deployments are Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and any 1.7.x before 1.7.5. No special non-default feature or configuration toggle is required and no user interaction by a victim is needed to inject the headers. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:L/A:N, base 5.0 Medium) indicates network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation that requires authentication (PR:L) and no user interaction, with only a low integrity impact and a scope change (the injected headers affect the outgoing message/recipients rather than the Roundcube host itself). The authentication requirement is the dominant limiting factor: an attacker must already hold valid webmail credentials, which contains this to insider misuse, compromised accounts, or environments offering self-service/guest accounts. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, SSVC decision, or POC indicator was provided in the input, so there is no signal of active exploitation or published exploit code - consistent with a low-to-moderate real-world threat. The vendor confirms a patch (Roundcube advisory 1.6.20/1.7.5 and the fixing commit), and the code evidence corroborates the root cause, so the technical claim is solid. Net: a legitimate hardening/patch priority for Roundcube operators, but absent exploitation signals it is a routine-severity fix rather than a drop-everything incident. No conflicting signals between CVSS and description were found; both agree on authenticated remote abuse. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A remote attacker with valid webmail credentials (or control of a compromised Roundcube account) composes a message and supplies crafted References, In-Reply-To, Message-ID, or From request parameters containing CRLF/newline sequences. Because rcmail_sendmail only stripped newlines from Subject and Organization, the attacker smuggles additional arbitrary headers (e.g. extra Bcc/recipients or spoofed routing headers) into the outgoing mail. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; exploitation requires authentication and no user interaction. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Mail header injection in Roundcube Webmail (all versions before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5) lets a logged-in webmail user smuggle arbitrary headers into an outgoing message by placing CRLF sequences in the References, In-Reply-To, Message-ID, or From request parameters processed by rcmail_sendmail. The primary limiting factor is authentication (CVSS PR:L): only account holders, compromised accounts, or self-service/guest registrations can reach the compose-and-send flow, and the assessed impact is integrity-only with a scope change rather than code execution or data disclosure. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the issue is a moderate-priority correctness fix rather than a top-tier emergency; vendor patches exist in 1.6.20 and 1.7.5.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Roundcube Webmail 1.6.20 (1.6.x branch) or 1.7.5 (1.7.x branch), per the advisory at https://roundcube.net/news/2026/10/19/security-updates-1.6.20-and-1.7.5 and the release tags at https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.6.20 and https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.7.5; the underlying fixes are commits acd32a86f631dd6dcda8ac3ec7bd9ba4d4c0c117 and 79adcfc0c48012bbbe930278471425027fd7331c, which normalize whitespace in all string header values, so distributors can backport either patch rather than the full release. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the practical compensating controls are to tighten who can reach the compose flow - disable self-registration and guest/self-service account creation, and suspend dormant or shared mailboxes that could be used as injection origins - accepting the operational cost of manual account provisioning; additionally, apply outbound MTA header-integrity rules that reject or strip messages containing duplicate or unexpected References, In-Reply-To, Message-ID, or From headers, understanding this only catches the symptom downstream and may cause false positives on legitimate mailing-list or forwarder traffic. Because exploitation requires a valid webmail login, prompt credential rotation and session invalidation for suspected compromised accounts limits exposure, but patching remains the only complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Roundcube is a PHP-based IMAP webmail client; the affected code is program/include/rcmail_sendmail.php, whose headers_input() method assembles the outbound MIME headers from request parameters before handing the message to the MTA. The root cause is inconsistent sanitization: prior to the fix, only the Subject and Organization header values were passed through preg_replace('/[\r\n]+/', ' ', ...), while other string header values taken directly from the compose request (References, In-Reply-To, Message-ID, From) were inserted verbatim. Because these values reach the raw header block, embedded CR/LF sequences terminate the current header line and start attacker-chosen ones, the classic header-injection pattern (tracked here under CWE-99, code injection, in the CVE record). The upstream commit normalizes whitespace in every string header value via trim(preg_replace('/[\r\n\t\s]+/', ' ', $value)) and removes the now-redundant per-header handling for Subject and Organization, so the injection primitive is closed uniformly rather than header-by-header. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:L/A:N) correctly reflects that the attacker must be an authenticated webmail user, no victim interaction is required, confidentiality and availability are untouched, and scope changes because injected headers propagate into downstream mail transport and the recipient's client, outside the Roundcube component itself.

DescriptionCVE.org
Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 is affected by a mail header injection vulnerability. rcmail_sendmail stripped newline characters only from the Subject and Organization headers, leaving other header values taken from request parameters unsanitized, so a remote authenticated attacker could inject arbitrary headers into an outgoing message via the References, In-Reply-To, Message-ID and From parameters. Upstream fixed this in the commit “Fix mail header injection via References/In-Reply-To/Message-ID/From parameters”, which normalizes whitespace in every string header value.
