Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the Edge Processor feature to be explicitly enabled on Splunk Enterprise (it is OFF by default), which exposes the affected Data Management REST API. The attacker must also already authenticate as a user holding a role with the preview_data_management_pipeline capability or the edit_data_management_pipeline_job capability. Given those prerequisites, the attacker simply references a Data Management SPL2 preview job ID belonging to another user, because the API enforces the capability but not ownership. Limiting factors: non-default feature activation, a valid authenticated account, and possession of one of the two specific capabilities; impact is confined to cross-user preview jobs and results (read/delete), not system-wide data.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 5.4 MEDIUM) shows a network-reachable, low-complexity flaw that nonetheless requires an already-authenticated account (PR:L) holding a specific Splunk capability (preview_data_management_pipeline or edit_data_management_pipeline_job). This is a CWE-639 insecure-direct-object-reference/authorization bypass, not full authentication bypass, so the real-world attacker must already be a legitimate (if lower-privileged) Splunk user. Crucially, the affected Data Management REST API only exists when the Edge Processor feature is enabled, and that feature is OFF by default - a major mitigating factor that the raw CVSS score does not capture. No EPSS probability is provided in the input, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC is referenced, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. The only reference is the vendor advisory SVD-2026-1007, which was the basis for the Cisco-attributed report. Signals are internally consistent (authenticated, limited-impact, feature-gated); the dominant limiting factor is that most deployments will not have Edge Processor turned on, pushing effective real-world risk below what the MEDIUM score alone implies.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

In a Splunk Enterprise environment (below 10.4.4) where an administrator has enabled the non-default Edge Processor feature, a low-privileged user who has been granted a role carrying the preview_data_management_pipeline or edit_data_management_pipeline_job capability calls the Data Management REST API and references a SPL2 preview job owned by another user. Because the API checks the capability but not ownership, the attacker reads that other user's preview data or deletes their preview jobs and results. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, so this would require a crafted API request by the authenticated insider.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026

Splunk Enterprise deployments below 10.4.4 expose Data Management SPL2 preview jobs and results to authenticated users who hold the preview_data_management_pipeline or edit_data_management_pipeline_job capability, because the Data Management REST API checks the capability but never verifies that the referenced preview job belongs to the requester. This lets such a user read or delete other users' preview jobs and their output by referencing an out-of-scope job ID. The exposure is limited: the vulnerable REST API only exists when the non-default Edge Processor feature is explicitly turned on, and the attacker must already have a valid account with one of the two specific capabilities. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no CISA KEV listing.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to 10.4.4 or later, per Splunk advisory SVD-2026-1007 (https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-1007). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to keep the Edge Processor feature disabled - it is off by default, and disabling it removes the Data Management REST API entirely, at the cost of losing the data management control plane and pipeline preview functionality; verify the setting has not been enabled on any search head or management node. Additionally, audit roles and remove preview_data_management_pipeline and edit_data_management_pipeline_job from any user who does not strictly require pipeline preview work, since both capabilities are prerequisites for exploitation, and review the REST API audit trail for unexpected cross-user preview job identifiers as a detection measure.

Technical ContextAI · show details

This is a CWE-639 authorization bypass through a user-controlled key, i.e. an insecure direct object reference in the Data Management REST API of Splunk Enterprise. The API performs capability-based access control - a caller must hold preview_data_management_pipeline or edit_data_management_pipeline_job - but omits the object-level ownership check that would confirm the requested Data Management SPL2 preview job was created by that same user. Supplying an arbitrary job identifier therefore returns or deletes another tenant's preview job and sample results. The affected endpoint family exists only when the Edge Processor feature, which implements the data management control plane and SPL2 pipeline preview workflow, is enabled; that feature is off by default. The CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N vector reflects low confidentiality and integrity impact from a network-reachable, low-privileged, authenticated session, with no availability impact and no scope change, consistent with a cross-user data exposure confined to preview jobs rather than system-wide data access.

DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.4, a user that holds a role with the preview_data_management_pipeline capability or edit_data_management_pipeline_job capability could read or delete Data Management SPL2 preview jobs and results outside their ownership scope. The vulnerability is possible because the Data Management Representational State Transfer (REST) API verifies the required capability but does not verify that the requested preview job belongs to the requester. The affected Data Management REST API is available only when the Edge Processor feature is turned on. The Edge Processor feature is turned off by default.
