| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that an operator run a Metasploit module whose code path uses send_request_cgi! to contact an HTTP server the attacker controls, and that this server return a 3xx redirect pointing to a different host; in versions before 6.5.7 the redirect was followed with no destination restriction. The practical prerequisite is therefore operator-initiated interaction with an adversary-controlled (or compromised) HTTP endpoint (UI:R), plus internal services that are network-reachable from the operator's host. Limiting factors: it only affects the send_request_cgi! redirect-following behavior, only versions prior to 6.5.7, and the attacker must induce the operator to target their server rather than exploit a passively listening service. The fix gates this behind the new HttpRedirectPolicy option defaulting to 'same_host', so patched/default-configured instances are no longer exposed. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity SSRF (CVSS 4.7, CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N) whose real-world urgency is modest. The attack vector is network and complexity is low, but UI:R is the decisive limiter: exploitation requires a Metasploit operator to actively run a module that issues an HTTP request (via send_request_cgi!) against an attacker-controlled server. No EPSS score, SSVC decision, KEV listing, or POC is present in the provided data, so there is no public exploitation signal to weigh against the CVSS. The scope-changed metric (S:C) is appropriate and meaningful here: the bug lets the attacker pivot the operator's host into internal networks, which is the real value of the flaw, but confidentiality impact is only Low and integrity/availability are None. Net assessment: a legitimate but not emergency priority - this is a defensive/offensive-tool vulnerability that inverts trust (the attacker is typically the 'target' the operator is testing), not a widely-automatable service exploit. EPSS is absent rather than low, so no probability claim can be made; treat prioritization as patch-on-next-cycle unless operators routinely point Metasploit at untrusted/adversary-controlled HTTP servers. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A penetration tester runs a Metasploit module against a host they believe is a benign target, but that host runs a malicious HTTP server. The server responds with a 3xx redirect pointing at an internal service (e.g., http://169.254.169.254/ or an internal admin panel) reachable from the operator's network; because send_request_cgi! followed cross-host redirects without restriction in versions before 6.5.7, Metasploit issues the request on the attacker's behalf. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, though the fixing PR (rapid7/metasploit-framework#21979) documents the exact code path. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026
Server-side request forgery in Metasploit Framework before 6.5.7 allows an attacker-controlled HTTP server to redirect requests made through send_request_cgi! to arbitrary hosts reachable from the operator's network, including internal HTTP services. The CVSS 3.1 vector (4.7, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N) reflects that no privileges are required but the operator must interact with the malicious endpoint, and scope is changed because internal services can be reached. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, and the issue is fixed in 6.5.7 via a new HttpRedirectPolicy that defaults to same_host.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Metasploit Framework to 6.5.7 or later, which contains the vendor fix referenced in GitHub PR https://github.com/rapid7/metasploit-framework/pull/21979. After upgrading, verify HttpRedirectPolicy remains at its secure default of same_host, or set it to same_origin for stricter redirect handling; the allowlist policy with HttpRedirectOrigins can be used where legitimate cross-host redirects are required. If upgrading is not immediately possible, avoid running Metasploit modules against untrusted or potentially compromised HTTP servers, restrict outbound network access from the Metasploit host to only required internal HTTP services, and segment the operator workstation from sensitive services; these controls reduce exposure but do not fix the underlying redirect-following behavior. Note that same_host and same_origin policies may break legitimate workflows that depend on cross-host redirects, so validate module behavior after changing the policy.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery) in the Ruby Metasploit Framework HTTP client helper lib/msf/core/exploit/remote/http_client.rb. send_request_cgi! previously followed 3xx redirects via reconfig_redirect_opts! without checking whether the redirect target changed host or origin, so a malicious HTTP server could return a Location header pointing at an internal service and cause the Metasploit process to issue a request to it. The upstream PR 21979 adds HttpRedirectPolicy (same_origin, same_host, allowlist; default same_host) and HttpRedirectOrigins, tracks request origins and connection options during redirect chains, and raises HttpRedirectSecurityError when a cross-origin redirect would carry sensitive request state such as cookies or authorization. The CVSS vector has PR:N but UI:R because the operator must run a module that contacts the attacker's server; S:C reflects that the redirected request can affect resources beyond the Metasploit component.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Metasploit Framework versions before 6.5.7 allow HTTP requests made through send_request_cgi! to follow redirects to a different host without restricting the redirect destination. A malicious HTTP server can cause the system running Metasploit to make requests to arbitrary HTTP services reachable from the operator's network, including internal services that are not otherwise accessible to the attacker.
