Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a victim to actively run the mysqldump client against an attacker-controlled, malicious, or MITM'd MySQL Server/Cluster endpoint over the network ('multiple protocols'); the flaw is in the client component, not the listening server. Limiting factors: Oracle rates it 'difficult to exploit' (AC:H), it requires human interaction from someone other than the attacker (UI:R, e.g. an operator initiating a dump), and it affects only specific recent branches - MySQL Server 8.4.0-8.4.12 / 9.7.0-9.7.3 / 26.7.0-26.7.1 and MySQL Cluster 8.0.0-8.0.49 / 8.4.0-8.4.12 / 9.7.0-9.7.3 / 26.7.0-26.7.1. No authentication to the attacker's endpoint is needed (PR:N), but the client-side delivery and user-action requirement prevent unattended or server-facing exploitation.

Impact

This is a genuinely high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.5) but with real-world risk tempered by several limiting signals. The vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H shows network reach and no authentication (PR:N), but two factors sharply constrain it: high attack complexity (AC:H, Oracle explicitly calls it 'difficult to exploit') and required human interaction (UI:R) from a person other than the attacker. Critically, the affected component is 'Client: mysqldump' - a client utility, not the server daemon - so despite AV:N this is a client-side attack where a victim must run mysqldump against an attacker-controlled or malicious MySQL endpoint; this nuance reconciles the network vector with the human-interaction requirement. No EPSS score was provided, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified, so there is no present evidence of exploitation. Net assessment: patch in the normal Oracle CPU cycle rather than as an emergency - the full-takeover impact (C:H/I:H/A:H) justifies attention, but AC:H + UI:R + client-side delivery make mass or automated exploitation unlikely. The 'Information Disclosure' tag understates the stated impact, which is full takeover across confidentiality, integrity and availability - treat the tag as unreliable.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker stands up a malicious or compromised MySQL server (or performs an active network position/MITM against multiple protocols) and lures a database operator into running mysqldump against it. When the mysqldump client processes crafted server responses, the flaw is triggered, resulting in takeover of the host running the client. No public proof-of-concept is known, and successful exploitation is rated difficult.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026

MySQL Server and MySQL Cluster in the 8.4, 9.7 and 26.7 branches (plus Cluster 8.0.x) ship a mysqldump client that can be subverted by an attacker-controlled, malicious, or man-in-the-middle MySQL endpoint, letting an attacker who can influence the server a victim dumps from take over the client host with full confidentiality, integrity and availability impact (CVSS 7.5, C:H/I:H/A:H). The trust boundary is inverted: the victim must actively launch mysqldump against the hostile endpoint, which is why Oracle scores it AC:H and UI:R despite no credentials being needed against the attacker's own endpoint (PR:N). No public exploit code or CISA KEV entry was identified at time of analysis, and no EPSS score was supplied, so real-world exploitation is currently unproven rather than observed.

RemediationAI

Apply the Oracle Critical Patch Update for October 2026 (https://www.oracle.com/security-alerts/cpuoct2026.html) to move MySQL Server 8.4.0-8.4.12, 9.7.0-9.7.3 and 26.7.0-26.7.1 and MySQL Cluster 8.0.0-8.0.49, 8.4.0-8.4.12, 9.7.0-9.7.3 and 26.7.0-26.7.1 to a patched build; the supplied data does not specify exact fixed build numbers, so confirm the target release in the CPU version matrix before rollout. Because the flaw is client-side and delivery requires a dump against a hostile endpoint, the highest-value compensating control is to stop trusting arbitrary servers: enforce TLS with server certificate verification (--ssl-mode=VERIFY_IDENTITY and a pinned --ssl-ca) for every mysqldump invocation, which defeats the MITM variant but not a genuinely malicious endpoint holding a valid certificate. Restrict dump jobs to an allow-list of approved database hosts and DNS resolution paths, and remove mysqldump from general-purpose developer workstations and shared CI runners where operators may point it at arbitrary endpoints; the trade-off is reduced ad-hoc flexibility and the need for a centralized, audited backup service. Until patched clients are deployed, run dumps from a low-privilege, network-egress-filtered host or container so that a compromised dump session cannot pivot to credentials and data reachable from the operator's primary workstation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

mysqldump is the command-line logical backup client distributed with MySQL Server and MySQL Cluster; it opens an outbound connection to a server, negotiates one of several MySQL wire protocols, and then parses and locally materializes server-supplied metadata, schema statements and result sets. Because the client inherently trusts the endpoint it is told to dump from, a malicious or intercepted server can return crafted protocol responses or SQL objects that are processed on the operator's workstation, escaping the intended server-to-client data boundary - a classic client-side trust inversion. The 'multiple protocols' wording in the Oracle advisory reflects that the vulnerable path can be reached over more than one supported transport/protocol variant, broadening the attack surface beyond a single connection mode. Oracle assigned no CWE for this entry, so the root-cause class must be inferred from the vector rather than a published weakness taxonomy. The assessed vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H confirms network reachability with high attack complexity ('difficult to exploit' in Oracle's own wording), no privileges required against the attacker's endpoint, and a mandatory human action - an operator initiating or approving a dump - with unchanged scope and total loss of confidentiality, integrity and availability on the client. Note the 'Information Disclosure' tag on this record is narrower than the CVSS impact metrics, which describe full compromise of the affected client installation.

Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of MySQL Server, MySQL Cluster. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.5 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Oracle's MySQL Server and MySQL Cluster releases (8.4, 9.7, 26.7 and Cluster 8.0.x) ship a mysqldump client that implicitly trusts whichever database endpoint it is pointed at, so an attacker who controls or intercepts that endpoint can seize full control of the machine running the dump - confidentiality, integrity and availability all compromised. No vendor fix exists yet, which means every team that runs backups, migrations or data extracts against third-party, vendor-managed or cloud-hosted MySQL instances is currently exposed, including DBA workstations and CI/CD runners that carry production credentials. Leadership should care because the blast radius is credential-holding infrastructure rather than the database itself, and the trigger is a routine operational task rather than an obvious attack surface.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: restrict mysqldump to a short allowlist of verified, internally controlled endpoints; enforce TLS with server certificate validation and CA pinning (--ssl-mode=VERIFY_IDENTITY); run dumps only inside isolated, low-privilege containers or dedicated hosts that hold no other production secrets; apply egress filtering from dump hosts to approved database endpoints only; rotate credentials used by any dump job that has reached an untrusted or third-party endpoint; prefer alternative dump or managed backup tooling that authenticates the server; and alert on unexpected process or binary execution on hosts running dump jobs.
