| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated OpenCATS account holding at least EDIT or DELETE access level for calendar/activity functions (PR:L); the attacker then supplies arbitrary eventID values to the onEditEvent()/onDeleteEvent() handlers, which pre-0.10.0 perform no ownership check against the event's entered_by owner. Limiting factors: exploitation is confined to authenticated users within the same site/tenant (the fix still scopes queries by site_id), no administrator/SA privilege is needed, and impact is restricted to calendar event tampering/deletion rather than broader data or system compromise. Works against default configurations of OpenCATS before 0.10.0. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-to-moderate priority issue, consistent with its CVSS 4.0 score of 5.3 (Medium). The vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N shows the realistic shape of the flaw: network-reachable and low-complexity, but requiring low-privilege authentication (PR:L) and yielding only limited integrity impact (VI:L) with no confidentiality or availability impact and no scope change. This is a classic CWE-639 (IDOR / missing authorization) against calendar objects, not a system-compromise bug. No EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. The CVE is NOT in CISA KEV and no public exploit code was supplied in the intelligence, so this is not active-exploitation-driven urgency. The main factor elevating it slightly above pure theory is that the fix is trivial and the preconditions are modest (any user with EDIT/DELETE access). One discrepancy to verify: the Tags label this 'Authentication Bypass', but the CWE (CWE-639), the description, and the patch all describe an AUTHORIZATION flaw affecting already-authenticated users - horizontal privilege abuse, not an authentication bypass. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A legitimate OpenCATS recruiter account holder with EDIT or DELETE access to activities/calendar manipulates the eventID parameter sent to the edit/delete calendar endpoints, substituting IDs belonging to other users. Because the pre-patch onEditEvent()/onDeleteEvent() code never verified that the event's 'entered_by' owner matched the requesting user, the attacker can tamper with or destroy colleagues' calendar events, including private ones. No public proof-of-concept was provided, but the fix commit and vulnerable source lines are public, making a working exploit trivial to derive. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026
Missing authorization in OpenCATS before 0.10.0 allows authenticated users holding EDIT or DELETE calendar access to modify or delete other users' calendar events by supplying arbitrary eventID values to CalendarUI::onEditEvent() and onDeleteEvent(), including events intended to be private to their owner. The flaw is an IDOR (CWE-639) that works against default configurations; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and there is no CISA KEV listing. It is rated CVSS 4.0 5.3 (Medium), with low integrity impact and no confidentiality or availability impact.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to OpenCATS 0.10.0 or later (vendor-released patch: 0.10.0), which applies the upstream commit aa3b414c3672f5010ca26c44192aa8e72d3735bd adding ownership validation to CalendarUI::onEditEvent() and onDeleteEvent(). If upgrading immediately is not possible, restrict access to the calendar module and the contacts.editActivity/contacts.deleteActivity functions to trusted or administrative users only, recognizing that this is a compensating control that reduces exposure but does not eliminate the underlying IDOR because eventID remains user-controlled; the trade-off is that regular users lose calendar functionality and activity editing. Also review calendar_event records and application logs for unexpected modifications or deletions of other users' events, and consult the release notes and issue 720 for any additional hardening included in 0.10.0.

Technical ContextAI · show details
OpenCATS is a PHP-based open-source applicant tracking system that stores calendar events in the calendar_event table, keyed by calendar_event_id and scoped to a site_id for multi-tenant separation. The root cause is CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key): the calendar edit and delete handlers accepted a user-supplied eventID and acted on it without verifying that the requesting user was the event's entered_by owner or held site-administrator rights. The upstream fix adds Calendar::get($eventID), which queries calendar_event by calendar_event_id and site_id, then rejects the request unless entered_by matches the current user or the user has ACCESS_LEVEL_SA for calendar.show. The same commit also inserts missing access-level checks in several AJAX and module endpoints, including ajax/editActivity.php, ajax/deleteActivity.php, ajax/testEmailSettings.php, modules/import/ImportUI.php, and the lists AJAX handlers.

DescriptionCVE.org
OpenCATS before 0.10.0 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in CalendarUI::onEditEvent() and onDeleteEvent() that allows authenticated users to modify or delete other users' calendar events. Attackers with EDIT or DELETE access can supply arbitrary eventID values to alter or remove any user's events, including non-public ones restricted to their owner.
