Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated account with gateway-creation privileges (PR:L) and that the target gateway is being registered with OAuth client-credentials authentication - the attacker supplies a crafted oauth_config.token_url during OAuth-enabled gateway registration. Exploitation is NOT possible against the gateway.url field (which already has SSRF protections); it works specifically because those validations are not applied to OAuth configuration parameters. Limiting factors: valid credentials with gateway-creation rights are mandatory, the OAuth registration flow must be used, data return is constrained to ~256 characters reflected only when the response fails OAuth token parsing (so blind/limited exfiltration), and the request is a fixed form-encoded POST. Impact is maximized only where internal services or cloud metadata endpoints (notably AWS IMDSv1) are reachable from the gateway host.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity, low-priority issue that multiple signals agree should NOT be treated as an emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 5.4) requires an authenticated attacker who already holds gateway-creation privileges (PR:L), which substantially narrows the viable attacker population to trusted/semi-trusted insiders or accounts that have been compromised. EPSS is very low at 0.18% (7th percentile), and CISA SSVC scores Exploitation=none, Automatable=no, Technical Impact=partial - all consistent with a flaw that is real but not opportunistically scannable or wormable. There is no KEV listing and no public exploit identified, so there is no evidence of active exploitation. These signals are mutually consistent (low EPSS + SSVC none + no KEV + PR:L), so there is no conflict to flag. The genuine concern that elevates this above a trivial finding is the SSRF reach to cloud metadata endpoints (AWS IMDSv1, GCP, Azure): a successful hit against IMDSv1 could expose IAM/role credentials, but exploitation is constrained because only up to 256 characters of a non-OAuth-parseable response are reflected in the 502 error, and the request is a POST with form-encoded credentials rather than a flexible GET - limiting blind data exfiltration. Net: prioritize patching on internet-exposed or multi-tenant deployments, but this does not warrant out-of-band emergency response.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated user with gateway-creation rights registers a new OAuth-enabled gateway and sets oauth_config.token_url to a malicious internal URL such as http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/iam/security-credentials/ (AWS IMDSv1) or an internal admin service. The gateway immediately issues an HTTP POST to that URL, and if the response is not a valid OAuth token it reflects up to 256 characters of the body back in a 502 error, letting the attacker probe internal services and potentially harvest cloud metadata. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026

Server-side request forgery in IBM ContextForge MCP Gateway 0.1.0 through 1.0.5 lets users who hold an authenticated account with gateway-creation privileges direct arbitrary HTTP POST requests at internal network services, localhost-bound daemons, and cloud metadata endpoints (AWS IMDSv1, GCP, Azure). The flaw is reachable only through the OAuth client-credentials gateway registration flow, where the oauth_config.token_url parameter is used without the SSRF validation that already guards the gateway.url field; the gateway then immediately POSTs form-encoded client credentials to the attacker-named URL and, when the reply fails OAuth token parsing, reflects up to 256 characters of the response body in an HTTP 502 error. Exploitation requires valid low-privileged credentials (PR:L) and returns only limited/blind data, no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, there is no CISA KEV listing, and EPSS is 0.18% (7th percentile) - a moderate, low-priority issue rather than an emergency.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis - the supplied references (IBM support node 7285723 and the NVD/EUVD entries) contain no fixed version number, so confirm patch status directly with IBM PSIRT before planning an upgrade, and treat any version beyond 1.0.5 as unverified until IBM states otherwise. Until a fix is available, apply targeted compensating controls: enforce an allowlist on oauth_config.token_url so registrations may only reference known identity-provider hosts (trade-off: new or regional IdPs must be onboarded through change control, and legitimate registrations will fail closed); block outbound traffic from gateway hosts to link-local 169.254.169.254/32 and the GCP/Azure metadata addresses at the network or host firewall (trade-off: any workload legitimately relying on instance metadata for credentials will break, so migrate those to workload identity or sidecar credential delivery first); and enforce AWS IMDSv2 with required token hopping, which rejects the simple form-encoded POST this flaw issues (trade-off: legacy agents expecting IMDSv1 will fail until updated). Additionally, restrict gateway-creation privileges to a small trusted administrative group so PR:L cannot be obtained casually, segment the gateway host so loopback and RFC 1918 admin services are not reachable from it, and monitor outbound POSTs plus HTTP 502 responses for reflected response-body content as a detection signal. Re-test the registration flow after any mitigation to confirm the token_url control actually blocks internal addresses rather than only the gateway.url field, and revisit once IBM publishes a patched release or updates https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/7285723.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery) arising from inconsistent input validation inside IBM ContextForge MCP Gateway's gateway registration workflow. ContextForge brokers Model Context Protocol servers and supports registering upstream gateways protected by OAuth client-credentials authentication; during that registration the system trusts the operator-supplied oauth_config.token_url and performs an immediate outbound HTTP POST to it, carrying the client credentials as a form-encoded body. SSRF defenses exist for the gateway.url field but were never extended to the OAuth configuration parameters, so the token URL becomes an unvalidated request primitive. Targets of interest are anything reachable from the gateway host: RFC 1918 services, loopback-bound admin interfaces, and cloud instance metadata (169.254.169.254 for AWS IMDSv1, plus the GCP and Azure metadata endpoints), where a plain form-encoded POST can still be accepted by IMDSv1-style services. Exfiltration is intentionally limited: only when the target's response cannot be parsed as a valid OAuth token response does ContextForge echo up to 256 characters of the body back inside the HTTP 502 error, making this a constrained read primitive layered on a fixed-shape POST request. The assessed vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N reflects network reachability, no user interaction, mandatory low-privileged authentication, and capped confidentiality/integrity impact with no availability effect.

DescriptionCVE.org

IBM ContextForge MCP Gateway 0.1.0 through 1.0.5 is vulnerable to a server-side request Forgery (SSRF) that allows authenticated users with gateway creation privileges to perform arbitrary HTTP POST requests to internal network resources and cloud metadata endpoints. The vulnerability occurs during OAuth-enabled gateway registration when the system fails to validate the oauth_config.token_url parameter. When registering a gateway with OAuth client credentials authentication, an attacker can supply a malicious token_url pointing to internal services, cloud metadata endpoints (AWS IMDSv1, GCP, Azure), or localhost-bound services. The application immediately performs an HTTP POST request to the attacker-controlled URL with form-encoded credentials in the body. If the response cannot be parsed as a valid OAuth token response, up to 256 characters of the response body are reflected back to the attacker in the HTTP 502 error message. This vulnerability bypasses existing SSRF protections that are applied to the gateway.url field but not to OAuth configuration parameters.
