MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated user holding the Owner role - the top-tier administrative role in a Coder deployment that already has full control - to write HTML markup into the ApplicationName or LogoURL appearance settings. The payload only affects others when those users subsequently view the Coder dashboard or receive/open SMTP notification emails (UI:P), so successful impact depends on the deployment having SMTP notifications enabled and/or other users actively using the dashboard. The dominant limiting factor is the Owner-role requirement (PR:H): an attacker without administrative credentials cannot reach this flaw, which is why the vendor recommends restricting the Owner role to trusted administrators as a workaround. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-priority issue despite being a stored-injection flaw. The CVSS 4.0 base score is only 4.8 (Medium), and every signal reinforces limited real-world risk. The vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:P/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N) shows that exploitation requires the Owner role - the single most privileged role in a Coder deployment, holding full administrative control - so the attacker is already a trusted super-admin before the flaw is relevant. The impact is confined to limited integrity (VI:L/SI:L) with no confidentiality or availability effect, consistent with HTML injection rather than full script execution. No EPSS score was provided in the input, the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code was referenced, so exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The vendor explicitly notes that 'practical impact is limited' because the required Owner role already has full control. No signals conflict here - all sources (NVD-style CVSS, vendor advisory, and the reporter) agree this is a defense-in-depth hardening fix, not an urgent threat. The only mildly elevating factor is that injected markup reaches other deployment users via the dashboard and outbound SMTP notification emails, giving a malicious or compromised Owner a minor phishing/defacement vector against lower-privileged users. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A malicious or compromised Owner-role user edits the deployment's ApplicationName or LogoURL appearance settings to embed HTML markup. That markup is stored and later rendered unescaped in the Coder dashboard and in SMTP notification emails delivered to other deployment users, enabling content spoofing or phishing against those users when they view the dashboard or open the emails. No public proof-of-concept exploit code was identified in the provided data, and exploitation requires the pre-existing highly privileged Owner role plus the victim viewing the rendered content (UI:P). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 17, 2026
Stored HTML injection in Coder's deployment appearance settings lets a user holding the Owner role persist unescaped markup in the ApplicationName and LogoURL fields, which is then rendered into the Coder dashboard and into SMTP notification emails received by other users of the deployment. It affects releases below 2.29.17 (ESR), 2.30.0 through 2.32.6, 2.33.0 through 2.33.7, and 2.34.0 through 2.34.1, and is fixed in 2.29.17, 2.32.7, 2.33.8, and 2.34.2 respectively. Severity is low because the Owner role already confers full administrative control of the deployment, the assessed impact is limited to integrity (CVSS 3.1: AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N), and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; the issue is not in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patches exist for every affected line: upgrade to 2.34.2 (from 2.34.0-2.34.1), 2.33.8 (from 2.33.0-2.33.7), 2.32.7 (from 2.30.0-2.32.6, and covers 2.31.x), or 2.29.17 for the ESR line; release artifacts and notes are linked from https://github.com/coder/coder/security/advisories/GHSA-h58c-xccx-75m3 and the fix itself is PR #25804 (commit ec19bc41d80568c0eb9f74b526e8cc8ffbe3be9a). Where upgrading is delayed, the vendor's documented workaround is to restrict the Owner role to trusted administrators and audit current Owner membership - the trade-off is reduced administrative redundancy and slower change velocity for deployment-wide settings. As additional compensating controls, review and clear any unexpected values in the ApplicationName and LogoURL appearance settings, and if the deployment's SMTP notification path is not essential, disabling outbound email notifications removes the delivery vector to other users at the cost of losing alert and invitation mail; limiting dashboard access to a small trusted user set similarly reduces exposure but narrows the platform's usability. Detection should focus on audit-log entries for appearance-setting changes made outside normal change windows, since only an Owner-role account can write these fields.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Coder is a self-hosted, Go-based platform for provisioning cloud development environments, distributed as the Go module go/github.com/coder/coder/v2 and identified in CPE data as cpe:2.3:a:coder:coder. Two deployment-wide appearance settings, ApplicationName and LogoURL, are persisted by administrators and later interpolated into server-rendered HTML templates - the web dashboard chrome and the SMTP notification email templates. The root cause is CWE-79: those values were written into HTML output without sufficient contextual escaping, so stored markup in either field is emitted verbatim rather than encoded. Because the sink is ordinary HTML rendering rather than a script-execution primitive in the assessed vector, the practical consequence is defacement/spoofed markup and social-engineering content inside trusted Coder UI and email, not scripted compromise of other users (VC:N, VI:L, SI:L). Exploitation is gated by PR:H - the configuration surface is only writable by the Owner role, the highest-privilege tier in Coder - and delivery to other users depends on UI:R, i.e. victims loading the dashboard or opening notification mail, which in turn requires SMTP notifications to be configured. The vendor's fix (PR #25804, commit ec19bc41d80568c0eb9f74b526e8cc8ffbe3be9a) HTML-escapes both values at render time across the 2.29 ESR, 2.32, 2.33, and 2.34 release lines.

Coder before 2.29.17, 2.30.0 before 2.32.7, 2.33.0 before 2.33.8, and 2.34.0 before 2.34.2 contains a stored HTML injection vulnerability because the ApplicationName and LogoURL appearance settings are rendered into HTML output without sufficient escaping. Attackers with the Owner role can store HTML markup in these settings that renders in the Coder dashboard and in SMTP notification emails sent to other deployment users.
