| Impact | This is a serious, credible flaw backed by a clear, code-level root-cause analysis from Wordfence (a reputable WordPress security vendor) with direct source links to the vulnerable |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who knows a LatePoint customer's registered email or phone number first harvests the public OTP nonce from the unauthenticated request_otp/resend_otp endpoints, then fires many concurrent auth__verify_otp requests so the non-atomic attempts counter never trips the 10-attempt lockout. With the lockout defeated, they brute-force the 6-digit OTP and log in as the victim, accessing their bookings and personal data. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires winning a timing race rather than a single deterministic request. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 17, 2026
LatePoint WordPress plugin through 5.7.4 allows unauthenticated remote attackers who know a target customer's registered email address or phone number to bypass OTP authentication by racing the attempts counter and brute-forcing the 6-digit code, potentially taking over that customer's account, bookings, and personal data. Exploitation requires the site to use LatePoint's OTP/passwordless login flow and the attacker to win a concurrency race while guessing the code; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 5.7.5, based on the 5.7.5 otp_helper.php reference; upgrade to LatePoint 5.7.5 or later, using the advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/61fbc1dd-06c9-409b-8cad-3f350b38dfc3?source=cve. If upgrading immediately is not possible, disable LatePoint's OTP/passwordless login flow and require standard password authentication, accepting the loss of passwordless convenience. As a compensating control, apply WAF or reverse-proxy rate limiting and concurrency limits specifically to the auth__verify_otp endpoint per source IP and per targeted identifier, understanding that aggressive limits can block legitimate customers behind NAT or shared networks and do not fully eliminate a race that a determined attacker can retry. Monitor for bursts of concurrent OTP verification requests and for repeated OTP requests against the same email address or phone number.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is an improper-authentication (CWE-287) race condition in LatePoint's OTP verification path. In verifyOTP, the attempts counter is read, incremented in memory, and written back without a conditional WHERE attempts < 10 guard or a SELECT ... FOR UPDATE row lock, so concurrent requests can each observe a stale counter value and exceed the intended 10-attempt lockout. The auth__verify_otp endpoint checks otp_verify_otp_nonce, but that nonce is emitted by the unauthenticated request_otp and resend_otp endpoints, so it does not stop an attacker from preparing valid requests. The affected component is the WordPress plugin identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:latepoint:appointment_booking_plugin_-_latepoint_|_calendar_&_scheduling_for_wordpress, with source references pointing to lib/helpers/otp_helper.php and lib/controllers/auth_controller.php in the 5.7.4 tag and an updated otp_helper.php in 5.7.5.

Network-reachable and unauthenticated (AV:N/PR:N/UI:N), but AC:H because success depends on winning a TOCTOU race and knowing the victim's identifier; full account takeover gives C:H/I:H, no availability impact.

DescriptionNVD
The Appointment Booking Plugin - LatePoint | Calendar & Scheduling for WordPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Authentication Bypass via Race Condition in all versions up to, and including, 5.7.4. This is due to a non-atomic read-modify-write on the OTP verification attempts counter in the verifyOTP function: the counter is incremented using a stale in-memory value with no conditional WHERE attempts < 10 guard on the UPDATE and no SELECT ... FOR UPDATE row lock, creating a TOCTOU window that allows concurrent requests to bypass the 10-attempt lockout. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers - who know a target customer's registered email address or phone number - to fire concurrent requests to the auth__verify_otp endpoint, defeat the lockout cap, brute-force the 6-digit OTP code, and authenticate as the targeted LatePoint customer, gaining full access to their account, bookings, and personal data. The nonce check present on the endpoint (otp_verify_otp_nonce) does not mitigate this issue, as the nonce is publicly emitted by the unauthenticated request_otp and resend_otp endpoints and is trivially obtainable by any unauthenticated attacker prior to launching the race.
Executive ViewAI
LatePoint WordPress plugin versions through 5.7.4 contain a critical authentication weakness that could allow attackers who know a customer's registered email address or phone number to take over that customer's account, exposing bookings and personal data. No vendor-released patch has been identified at time of analysis, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, but affected sites using LatePoint's OTP/passwordless login flow remain exposed. Leadership should prioritize interim controls and vendor patch tracking to protect customer trust and data.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Disable LatePoint's OTP/passwordless login flow; if it must remain enabled, enforce strict rate limits and account lockouts, add WAF rules to detect concurrent OTP guessing, monitor authentication logs for race-condition patterns, require strong passwords and a separate MFA factor, restrict plugin access, and consider removing or replacing LatePoint until a fix is available. Apply vendor patch when released.
