1 technique across 1 tactic: Defense Evasion The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a multi-tenant Mailu deployment hosting more than one domain, and the attacker must already hold a domain-manager (administrative) role over at least one hosted domain - confirmed by PR:H and the description's 'domain managers'/'domain administrator' wording. The specific trigger is enabling the allow_spoofing user permission, which pre-patch was not scoped to the manager's own domain, letting the lookup in core/admin/mailu/internal/views/postfix.py (postfix_sender_login) authorize that user as a sender for arbitrary hosted domains. Limiting factors: not exploitable on single-tenant/self-hosted instances with no untrusted domain managers; cross-domain spoofing only reaches other domains hosted on the same Mailu instance (not arbitrary external domains); no unauthenticated or end-user-level path exists. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but access-gated authorization flaw (CWE-285) rather than a mass-exploitation threat. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:H/SA:N, 8.2) is internally consistent with the description: PR:H confirms the attacker must already hold a privileged domain-manager role, AV:N reflects exploitation through the web admin interface, and the impact is purely integrity (VI:H/SI:H) - no confidentiality or availability effect, matching a spoofing/forgery outcome. No EPSS score, SSVC decision, or KEV entry was provided, so there is no signal of active or automatable exploitation. There is no standalone proof-of-concept exploit in the input - only the upstream patch (PR #4072) and a regression test, which demonstrate the mechanism but are fix artifacts, not weaponized exploit code. The high 8.2 score is driven by the strong integrity impact (forged DKIM/SPF-authenticated mail), but the PR:H precondition and the requirement for a multi-tenant hosted-domain deployment sharply narrow the realistic attacker population to insiders/tenants on shared Mailu instances. Verdict: a real priority for multi-tenant mail hosters, but low urgency for single-tenant/self-hosted operators where no untrusted domain manager exists. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a Mailu instance hosting multiple customer domains, a malicious or compromised domain manager for attacker.com enables the allow_spoofing permission on a user they control, then uses it to send mail as a sender at victim.com, a domain they do not manage. Because the sender/login lookup was not scoped to the attacker's own domain, Mailu signs and authorizes the message so it passes DKIM/SPF for victim.com, enabling convincing phishing. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, though the upstream patch and regression test fully disclose the mechanism. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026
Cross-domain sender spoofing in Mailu allows a domain manager to authenticate as arbitrary senders on other domains hosted on the same instance. The flaw is an improper-authorization issue in which the Postfix sender-login lookup honors the allow_spoofing flag globally rather than scoping it to the requesting user's own domain, so a manager of one hosted domain can enable spoofing and pass DKIM/SPF authentication for domains they do not own. Exploitation requires an existing domain-manager (administrative) role (CVSS PR:H) on a multi-tenant deployment hosting more than one domain; there is no unauthenticated or end-user path, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the upstream fix contained in commit f05aeb8322e2f61096af6b089d61ba6f40587d96 (delivered via pull request https://github.com/Mailu/Mailu/pull/4072), which scopes the allow_spoofing lookup in core/admin/mailu/internal/views/postfix.py to the user's own domain; upstream fix available (PR/commit), and a released patched version was not independently confirmed from the provided data, so operators should rebuild or redeploy images that include this commit - see the advisory at https://github.com/Mailu/Mailu/security/advisories/GHSA-crww-m82r-2wfm. If patching must be deferred, audit and remove the allow_spoofing flag from any user whose domain should not permit delegation, and restrict domain-manager privileges to fully trusted operators, accepting the trade-off that legitimate intra-domain spoofing/delegation use cases will break. Note that these are mitigating controls only: they do not close the underlying authorization gap, and cross-domain spoofing remains possible for any manager who can re-enable the flag until the patched code is deployed.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Mailu is a Dockerized mail server suite whose admin component exposes an internal Postfix policy endpoint at /internal/postfix/sender/login/<sender> to decide which authenticated users may send mail as a given address. That view (core/admin/mailu/internal/views/postfix.py, postfix_sender_login) builds a list of permitted senders and, pre-fix, added every user with allow_spoofing=True across all domains to that list. Because the query was not filtered by the sender's domain, the allow_spoofing flag - intended only to let a user authenticate as other senders within their own domain - leaked into cross-domain scope. This is a CWE-285 improper authorization defect: the permission check exists but lacks the domain boundary that would make it correct, letting a domain administrator effectively escalate their authenticated-sender privileges across tenant boundaries. The fix (commit f05aeb8322e2f61096af6b089d61ba6f40587d96, PR #4072) adds domain_name=domain_name to the lookup, and the accompanying regression test confirms that a spoofer in attacker.com remains a valid login for coworker@attacker.com but is no longer returned for victim@victim.com. Affected product per CPE is the mailu:mailu package (cpe:2.3:a:mailu:mailu:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), covering all builds prior to the fix commit.

DescriptionCVE.org
Mailu is a mail server distributed as a set of Docker images. Prior to f05aeb8322e2f61096af6b089d61ba6f40587d96, domain managers can enable spoofing for hosted domains they do not control. A potentially malicious domain administrator enables spoofing for another hosted domain and can send emails that are authenticated with DKIM/SPF for domains they should not be able to. This vulnerability is addressed by f05aeb8322e2f61096af6b089d61ba6f40587d96.

Executive ViewAI
Mailu, an open-source mail server platform used in multi-tenant deployments, contains a high-severity authorization flaw (CVE-2026-86009) that allows a domain manager to spoof email senders on other hosted domains, bypassing DKIM and SPF authentication. This undermines trust in email communications originating from the organization's domains, potentially enabling phishing or business email compromise. Leadership should prioritize mitigation because affected instances host multiple domains, and the flaw requires only an existing administrative role to exploit.
No vendor patch available. Interim mitigations: disable or restrict the allow_spoofing flag, limit domain-manager roles to trusted personnel, enforce least privilege, monitor mail logs for spoofing attempts, and consider single-domain deployments.
