MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Initial Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the victim be an authenticated Checkmk user with Setup access, and that this user be socially engineered into opening an attacker-crafted URL AND then clicking the Reset button or submitting an empty search in the Setup in-page search - the script does not fire automatically on page load. Limiting factors: active user interaction (UI:A) is mandatory, the target must already hold privileged Setup access, and affected versions are Checkmk before 2.5.0p15, before 2.4.0p38, before 2.3.0p51, and the EOL 2.2.0 branch; fully patched instances are not exploitable. |
| Impact | This is a client-side vulnerability (CWE-601 Open Redirect with a reflected cross-site-scripting component) in Checkmk's Setup in-page search, improperly validating the reset_url parameter. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A) correctly reflects that no attacker authentication is needed but active user interaction IS required - the victim must open a crafted URL and then click the Reset button or submit an empty search. This UI:A requirement is the single largest factor lowering real-world risk: exploitation is not autonomous and depends on social engineering of a specific privileged user. The VC:H/VI:H impact rating is plausible because the script executes in the session of an authenticated user holding Setup (administrative configuration) access, so a successful attack can read or alter monitoring configuration; however VA:H (availability high) in the vendor vector is questionable for an XSS/redirect flaw and I have independently downgraded it. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided, so there is no evidence of active or probable near-term exploitation - this reads as a legitimately-rated but not emergency-priority issue, chiefly because it is interaction-dependent and targets only users who already hold Setup privileges. Conflicting signal to note: the CVSS vector shows PR:N (attacker needs no privileges) while the vulnerability only has impact if the *victim* is an authenticated Setup user - the privilege burden sits on the target, not the attacker. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious Checkmk Setup search URL with a tampered reset_url parameter and delivers it (e.g. via email or chat) to a Checkmk administrator who holds Setup access. When the administrator opens the link and clicks Reset or submits an empty search, injected script runs in their authenticated session or they are silently redirected to an attacker-controlled external site. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026
Improper validation of the reset_url parameter in the Checkmk Setup in-page search lets an unprivileged remote attacker craft a URL that, once opened by an authenticated user holding Setup access, executes arbitrary script in that user's session or redirects the user to an arbitrary external site - but only when the victim clicks the Reset button or submits an empty search, since the payload does not fire on page load. Affected are Checkmk releases before 2.5.0p15, before 2.4.0p38, before 2.3.0p51, and the end-of-life 2.2.0 branch; fully patched instances are not exploitable. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and exploitation depends on successful social engineering of a privileged Setup user combined with mandatory user interaction.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a fixed release as documented in the vendor advisory: Checkmk 2.5.0p15 or later for the 2.5.0 branch, 2.4.0p38 or later for the 2.4.0 branch, and 2.3.0p51 or later for the 2.3.0 branch; instances still running the end-of-life 2.2.0 branch cannot be patched and must be migrated to a supported branch, so schedule that migration as the priority action. No separate workaround is documented in the advisory at https://checkmk.com/werk/22314, so compensating controls have to be architectural: restrict network access to the Setup GUI (and any reverse-proxy or WAF path that fronts it) to trusted administrative networks, which reduces the pool of users an attacker can socially engineer but does not remove the flaw for legitimate admins on those networks; and train Setup users not to open search/reset links from untrusted sources, accepting that this is a procedural control with no technical enforcement and that a single click on the Reset button or an empty search submission is enough to trigger it. If a WAF or reverse proxy is available, blocking or sanitising requests whose reset_url parameter contains an absolute external URL or a script-bearing scheme (for example javascript:) mitigates the redirect/XSS paths - but such filtering is signature-based, can be bypassed with encoding variations, and may break legitimate relative reset links, so it should be treated as temporary until patched. Note that patching does not revoke anything, but because the payload executes in a privileged browser session, administrators who may have been exposed should consider rotating Checkmk credentials and reviewing audit logs for unexpected Setup activity.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a client-side input-validation failure classified as CWE-601 (URL Redirection to Untrusted Site / Open Redirect), with an accompanying reflected cross-site scripting component, in the Setup in-page search of Checkmk's web GUI. The reset_url parameter is consumed by the in-page search's reset flow and is echoed back without adequate validation of scheme or destination host; because the value is later used as a navigation/redirect target, an attacker who controls the parameter can supply either an external URL - producing an open redirect away from the monitoring instance - or a script-bearing URI that is interpreted in the context of the victim's authenticated Setup session. The affected component is the Checkmk product family captured by CPE cpe:2.3:a:checkmk_gmbh:checkmk:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, and the root cause sits in the GUI layer rather than in the monitoring core, so the exposure is tied to who can reach the Setup interface. The vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector (8.6) and the independently assessed CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N agree that the attacker needs no privileges (PR:N in both vectors) and that the network is the attack vector, but that UI:R - active victim interaction - is mandatory and that scope changes because the resulting script or redirect executes inside the victim's authenticated, privileged Setup session. High confidentiality and integrity impact, no availability impact.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Improper validation of the reset_url parameter of the Setup in-page search in Checkmk <2.5.0p15, <2.4.0p38, <2.3.0p51 and 2.2.0 (EOL) allows an attacker to execute arbitrary script in the session of an authenticated user with Setup access, or to redirect that user to an arbitrary external site, by tricking the user into opening a crafted URL and clicking the Reset button or submitting an empty search.
Executive ViewAI
Checkmk's Setup in-page search contains a high-severity flaw (CVE-2026-14452) that lets an attacker hijack the browser session of a monitoring administrator or redirect them to an attacker-controlled website. Because Checkmk administrators typically hold broad visibility and credentials across critical infrastructure monitoring, a compromised Setup session can expose sensitive environment details or serve as a foothold for deeper intrusion. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and exploitation requires social engineering plus a victim clicking the Reset button, but no vendor-released patch was confirmed in the available data, leaving affected organizations dependent on interim mitigations.
No vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis, so apply interim mitigations: restrict network access to the Checkmk Setup interface to trusted management networks and require VPN or jump-host access; reduce the number of accounts with Setup privileges and enforce phishing-resistant MFA on them; filter or block request parameters containing script or external URL patterns in the Search/reset path at the reverse proxy or WAF; disable or limit the in-page search feature where operationally feasible; monitor web and proxy logs for unusual reset_url values or outbound redirects to unfamiliar domains; and conduct targeted user awareness for Setup administrators on clicking unsolicited Checkmk links or submitting empty searches from untrusted URLs. Upgrade to releases at or above 2.5.0p15, 2.4.0p38, or 2.3.0p51 as soon as they are available, and treat EOL 2.2.0 deployments as highest priority for replacement.
