Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires BOTH that an administrator has explicitly disabled one of the login methods via the disableFormLogin, disableBasicAuth, or disableOIDCLogin flags in the Admin Panel, AND that the attacker possesses otherwise-valid credentials for that specific disabled method; the attacker then calls the method's backend authentication endpoint directly rather than through the client UI. Limiting factors: this is not credential-free - valid credentials are mandatory (PR:L); it only has effect on deployments that have actually disabled a method (default-all-enabled deployments are unaffected since there is no policy to bypass); and impact is confined to defeating the login-method policy, not privilege escalation. Affected versions are all FileRise prior to 3.21.0.

Impact

This is a moderate, policy-enforcement authentication flaw rather than a high-urgency remote-code or credential-free bypass. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 5.4 Medium) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, but requiring low privileges (PR:L) because the attacker must already hold otherwise-valid credentials for the disabled method - the description explicitly states 'The flaw does not permit credential-free authentication.' No EPSS score, SSVC decision, KEV listing, or POC was supplied. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The practical risk is bounded: it does not grant new accounts or bypass credential checks, it only lets a legitimately-credentialed user reach a login method the administrator intended to disable, defeating a defense-in-depth policy (e.g., an org that disabled Basic Auth or form login to force OIDC). No conflicting signals are present, though the absence of EPSS/SSVC means widespread-exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the data given.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An organization disables form login or Basic Auth in the FileRise Admin Panel to force all authentication through OIDC/SSO. A user who still possesses valid local credentials (e.g., a former password that should no longer be usable via that path) sends a direct HTTP request to the disabled method's backend authentication endpoint, which - prior to 3.21.0 - validates the credentials and issues a session despite the policy. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

FileRise releases prior to 3.21.0 enforce administrator-configured login-method restrictions only in the browser client, so an authenticated user holding valid credentials for a method the administrator has disabled (form login, Basic Auth, or OIDC) can still authenticate by calling that method's backend endpoint directly. Exploitation is not credential-free - valid credentials for the disabled method are mandatory (CVSS vector PR:L) and only deployments that have actually disabled a method are affected, since a default all-enabled install has no policy to bypass - but the flaw fully defeats the login-method policy admins rely on for attack-surface reduction. Impact is bounded to policy enforcement rather than privilege escalation (CVSS 5.4, C:L/I:L/A:N), and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis; the vendor fixes the issue in version 3.21.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to FileRise 3.21.0 (vendor-released patch: v3.21.0; commit 613fdb28ca25e6dcc9bdfa590757b53935fad8da), available via the release page at https://github.com/error311/FileRise/releases/tag/v3.21.0 with details in advisory https://github.com/error311/FileRise/security/advisories/GHSA-p9qc-2r93-jccq. Be aware of the vendor's documented upgrade notes: after patching, deployments that intentionally disabled a login method will receive 403 Forbidden on direct API use of that method, so any automation or integration that legitimately calls a disabled endpoint must be migrated or the method re-enabled before it will work again. If patching must be deferred, the most direct compensating control is to enforce the same policy at the network edge - configure the reverse proxy or WAF to reject requests to the backend endpoints of any login method you have disabled (form-login submission, Basic Auth challenge on protected paths, and the OIDC callback/flow routes), with the trade-off that these endpoints may be shared with other legitimate functionality and over-broad blocking can break single sign-on or API clients. Additionally, rotate or remove credentials belonging to accounts that only retained access through a disabled method, since those credentials remain valid against the unpatched server. Deployments behind a reverse proxy should verify trusted proxy/IP header configuration after upgrading, otherwise the new failed-login throttling will key on the proxy address instead of the real client IP and can either lock out all users or fail to limit an attacker. Finally, monitor authentication logs for successful logins to endpoints corresponding to disabled methods and for the 403 responses the patched version emits, as an indicator of attempted exploitation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

FileRise is a self-hosted PHP web file manager (CPE cpe:2.3:a:error311:filerise:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) that offers multiple authentication paths: an HTML form login, HTTP Basic Auth, and OIDC. The Admin Panel exposes three policy flags - disableFormLogin, disableBasicAuth, and disableOIDCLogin - which were honored when rendering the client interface but were not consulted inside the corresponding server-side authentication handlers. The root cause falls under CWE-287 (Improper Authentication): authorization/policy decisions were implemented at the presentation layer, so the server treated any request that reached an authentication endpoint as legitimate regardless of the administrator's stated method policy. An attacker with valid credentials for a disabled method could simply POST to, or otherwise invoke, that method's backend route and obtain a session, bypassing the flag entirely. Commit 613fdb28ca25e6dcc9bdfa590757b53935fad8da resolves this by enforcing the disabled-method flags server-side and returning 403 Forbidden to direct requests for disabled login endpoints before any credential validation or OIDC flow setup occurs. The same v3.21.0 hardening release also added source-wide failed-login throttling (so rotating usernames from one source no longer resets the attempt budget) and server-side sanitization of public footer branding HTML using an allowlist (a, b, strong, em, i, span, small, br, plus href/target with rel="noopener noreferrer" on _blank links); those two changes are defense-in-depth improvements bundled into the same release and are not part of CVE-2026-69191.

DescriptionCVE.org

FileRise is a self-hosted web-based file manager with multi-file upload, editing, and batch operations. Prior to 3.21.0, FileRise enforces disableFormLogin, disableBasicAuth, and disableOIDCLogin in the client interface but not consistently in the corresponding server-side authentication flows. A user with otherwise valid credentials for a disabled method can call its backend endpoint directly and authenticate despite the administrator's login-method policy. The flaw does not permit credential-free authentication. This issue is fixed in version 3.21.0.
