Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated low-privileged FileRise account that holds create or owner permission on the target parent folder, plus a valid CSRF token, and a local storage backend (the patched containment check gates on the isLocal path). The attacker submits folderName values containing '..' segments to POST /api/folder/createFolder.php. Limiting factors: exploitation is bounded to directory creation (no file read or overwrite), the destination must be writable by the web-server OS account, and both authentication and the specific parent-folder permission are mandatory - so this cannot be triggered by anonymous or unprivileged remote users. Fixed in 3.19.0, which rejects '.'/'..' segments and verifies the parent stays inside the configured upload root before creation.

Impact

This is a moderate-risk, authenticated path-traversal issue (CWE-22) rather than a drop-everything priority. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L = 5.4) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, but requiring low-privileged authentication (PR:L) plus a valid CSRF token and create/owner permission on the parent folder. No EPSS score was supplied and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no signal of active exploitation; no POC is referenced either, so per the data this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The impact is limited to I:L/A:L with C:N - attackers can create (not read or overwrite) directories outside UPLOAD_DIR anywhere the web-server account can write, which can disrupt the filesystem or stage for follow-on abuse but does not directly disclose data. One point to verify: creating directories outside the intended upload root arguably affects resources beyond the component's security scope, so a Scope:Changed rating could be defensible; the vendor/NVD chose S:U and this analysis follows that. Overall: real but gated behind authentication and a specific permission, so it ranks as a hardening/patch-soon item, not an emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged but authenticated FileRise user who holds create or owner permission on a parent folder crafts a POST to /api/folder/createFolder.php with a folderName containing dot-dot (..) traversal segments and a valid CSRF token. Because validation checks the whole folderName string but does not reject traversal segments before FolderModel::createFolder() builds the path, the server creates directories outside UPLOAD_DIR wherever the web-server account can write. No public exploit is referenced, but the request is trivial to reproduce manually.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026

Authenticated path traversal in FileRise versions prior to 3.19.0 lets a low-privileged user who already holds create or owner permission on a parent folder create directories outside the configured upload root by submitting dot-dot segments to the folder-creation API. The impact is limited to arbitrary directory creation (integrity and availability impact rated low, CVSS 3.1 base score 5.4, vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L) - there is no file read, overwrite, or code execution primitive, and the traversal only succeeds where the web-server operating-system account can already write. The issue requires a valid account, the appropriate parent-folder permission, and a valid CSRF token, so it cannot be triggered anonymously, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis; the vendor released a fix in 3.19.0 that rejects dot and dot-dot segments and validates that the parent path resolves inside the upload root.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to FileRise 3.19.0, the version that rejects dot and dot-dot segments and verifies the parent path resolves inside the configured upload root; the release is at https://github.com/error311/FileRise/releases/tag/v3.19.0 and the advisory at https://github.com/error311/FileRise/security/advisories/GHSA-p7vh-cjpm-rmrq. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, apply compensating controls that specifically neutralise the traversal rather than generic hardening: since the destination must be writable by the web-server operating-system account, tighten filesystem permissions so that the FileRise process user can write only within the intended upload directory (the trade-off is that batch operations and any legitimate folders created outside that root will fail); or route folder operations through a non-local storage adapter, because the containment check and the vulnerable concatenation path are gated on the local backend, at the cost of re-configuring storage. Additionally, audit and restrict the set of accounts granted create or owner permission on parent folders, since exploitation requires that permission plus a valid CSRF token, and review the upload root and its siblings for unexpected directories created since deployment. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the patch should be treated as the primary fix rather than relying on the permission and CSRF prerequisites alone.

Technical ContextAI · show details

FileRise is a self-hosted PHP web file manager handling multi-file upload, editing, and batch operations, and the flaw sits in the folder-creation path of its domain layer. CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory, or Path Traversal) is the root cause class: the application validated the complete folderName string but never rejected dot-dot path segments before FolderModel::createFolder() concatenated the parent absolute path, a DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR, and the user-supplied folder name to build the destination directory. The pre-fix code in src/FileRise/Domain/FolderModel.php accepted a path in which the incoming name passed a single regular-expression check while resolveFolderPath() and resolveFolderPathForAdapter() sanitised segments by trimming slashes rather than rejecting traversal tokens, so an authenticated request to POST /api/folder/createFolder.php carrying dot-dot segments could escape UPLOAD_DIR. The 3.19.0 hardening commit (3bd5144b4bfdd03f059de18a4d106c235cf70685) introduces isValidFolderSegment() and splitFolderSegments() helpers that reject empty, dot, and dot-dot segments and require a single valid name for the new folder, plus a realpath-based containment check gated on the local storage backend (isLocal) that confirms the resolved parent stays inside uploadRoot() via isPathInsideOrSame(); the same build adds a dedicated security regression test, tests/security/create_folder_path_traversal_regressions.php. Because containment is enforced through the local storage adapter path, deployments using a remote or non-local adapter do not traverse the same code path, which constrains practical exposure.

DescriptionCVE.org

FileRise is a self-hosted web-based file manager with multi-file upload, editing, and batch operations. Prior to 3.19.0, FileRise validates the complete folderName string but does not reject dot-dot path segments before FolderModel::createFolder() constructs and creates the destination. An authenticated low-privileged user with a valid CSRF token and create or owner permission on the parent can submit traversal segments to POST /api/folder/createFolder.php and create directories outside UPLOAD_DIR wherever the web-server account can write. This issue is fixed in version 3.19.0.
