| Exploitation Conditions | Three concrete preconditions must all hold: (1) the administrator must have explicitly enabled the FileRise WebDAV service (a non-default, opt-in feature); (2) the target account must have a TOTP second factor configured (accounts without TOTP are unaffected by this specific bypass); and (3) the attacker must already know the account's valid primary credentials (username and password) - the flaw does not grant access without them. The limiting factor is that exploitation yields only the compromised account's own WebDAV file permissions (folderOnly/readOnly/disableUpload still apply), and the browser login path was never vulnerable since it enforced TOTP correctly; only the separate public/webdav.php AuthModel::authenticate() callback omitted the second-factor check. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditionally-gated authentication weakness (CWE-308, single-factor authentication) rated CVSS 8.1 with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N. The network vector, low complexity, and lack of user interaction push the score high, but the PR:L metric is the crucial moderator: the attacker must ALREADY possess valid primary credentials (username + password) for a TOTP-enabled account, and the administrator must have WebDAV enabled (a non-default feature). No EPSS score is provided in the input, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code is referenced - so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. This is best understood as an MFA-bypass / defense-in-depth failure rather than a wormable remote-unauthenticated flaw: TOTP was the control specifically meant to protect accounts whose passwords might be phished or leaked, and this bug nullifies that control on the separate public/webdav.php path while the browser login path still enforced it. Priority is real for organizations that run FileRise with WebDAV enabled and rely on TOTP, because a leaked/reused password alone now grants full WebDAV file access - but the required precondition chain (WebDAV on, target account TOTP-enabled, valid primary credentials known) keeps this below the tier of a blind internet-facing compromise. The fix (require TOTP for WebDAV, or use a non-TOTP account for WebDAV until an app-password flow exists) is confirmed in v3.16.0. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An administrator enables FileRise WebDAV and a user secures their account with TOTP. An attacker who has obtained that user's password (via phishing, reuse, or a prior leak) connects a standard WebDAV client to public/webdav.php and authenticates with only username and password - the TOTP second factor is never requested or validated - gaining the account's WebDAV read/write file permissions. No public exploit code is referenced; exploitation requires only a common WebDAV client and the network vector/low complexity of the CVSS vector. |

Multi-factor authentication bypass in FileRise WebDAV prior to 3.16.0 allows an attacker who already holds a valid username and password for a TOTP-enabled account to authenticate to the WebDAV endpoint without supplying the second factor, then operate within that account's WebDAV file permissions. The weakness is conditionally gated: the opt-in WebDAV service must have been enabled by an administrator, the targeted account must have TOTP configured, and the attacker must already know the account's primary credentials, which the CVSS vector reflects as authenticated access (PR:L); the normal browser login path was never affected. Rated CVSS 3.1 8.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) with high confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability impact; no public exploit code or active exploitation was identified at time of analysis. The issue is fixed in FileRise 3.16.0.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to FileRise 3.16.0 (release tag v3.16.0; fixing commit f7114ca2a4e624238dda0d097a07ad6b05c11bb6; advisory GHSA-cx7g-xhj8-8cx3), which blocks password-only WebDAV authentication for TOTP-enabled accounts. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, disable the WebDAV service, since it is an opt-in feature that is off by default; the trade-off is that all users lose WebDAV file access. Where WebDAV must remain available, restrict the endpoint to trusted networks or source IPs and treat it as a password-only credential surface, accepting that a leaked primary credential is then sufficient on its own. The vendor further notes that users needing WebDAV before a dedicated app-password flow exists should use an account without TOTP for that service, which lowers that account's overall protection and should be paired with a unique, routinely rotated password. Because exploitation requires prior knowledge of valid credentials, rotate passwords for TOTP-enabled accounts and review WebDAV access logs for unexpected Basic-auth sessions. Be aware that the same 3.16.0 release changed proxy-header login behavior, so FR_TRUSTED_PROXIES must be set before upgrading if you rely on it, and it additionally hardened archive extraction, first-run setup state, remember-me role resolution, and upload filename handling.

FileRise (GitHub project error311/FileRise) is a self-hosted, PHP-based web file manager providing multi-file upload, in-browser editing and batch operations. The affected component is its WebDAV endpoint (public/webdav.php), which exposes files over HTTP WebDAV using HTTP Basic authentication. The root cause class is CWE-308, Use of Single-factor Authentication: the WebDAV authentication callback validated only the account username and password through AuthModel::authenticate() and never verified the account's configured TOTP factor, even though the browser login flow enforced TOTP correctly. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:error311:filerise:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is a wildcard matching essentially all releases before the fix. The upstream change in commit f7114ca2a4e624238dda0d097a07ad6b05c11bb6, shipped as release v3.16.0, blocks password-only WebDAV logins for TOTP-enabled accounts. That same hardening release also added trusted-proxy validation for proxy-header login (FR_TRUSTED_PROXIES), applied blocked-filename policy before archive extraction, kept first-run setup closed after initial admin creation, resolved remember-me admin status from the current user record, and rejected encoded path separators during uploads; those are separate issues and not the subject of this CVE.

2DescriptionCVE.org
FileRise is a self-hosted web-based file manager with multi-file upload, editing, and batch operations. Prior to 3.16.0, when an administrator has enabled WebDAV, FileRise WebDAV Basic authentication validates only the account username and password through AuthModel::authenticate() and does not enforce the account's configured TOTP factor. An attacker who knows valid primary credentials for a TOTP-enabled account can authenticate to the enabled WebDAV service without supplying the second factor and exercise the account's WebDAV file permissions. The browser login path enforces TOTP, but the separate public/webdav.php authentication callback did not. This issue is fixed in version 3.16.0.

Executive ViewAI
FileRise deployments that expose the optional WebDAV service can have their multi-factor authentication protection bypassed, allowing anyone who already holds a valid username and password to reach files without presenting the second factor. Because MFA is a foundational control for protecting sensitive data, this weakens access assurance for every TOTP-enabled account with WebDAV permissions, though exposure is limited to organizations that enabled WebDAV and to attackers who already possess valid credentials. Leadership should care because a second-factor bypass erodes the primary safeguard protecting high-value file repositories.
