MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires (1) a victim who is a currently authenticated ClipBucket v5 administrator with an active session, (2) that admin being lured into submitting an attacker-controlled cross-site POST request to admin_area/index.php with mode=add_todo and a malicious val parameter, and (3) the endpoint's absence of a CSRF token, which lets the forged request succeed. The vulnerable sink is the val value being returned via nl2br() without output encoding. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: it is not remotely self-executing - it depends on active user interaction (UI:A) and a valid admin session, so it cannot be mass-exploited or wormed, and impact is confined to script execution in the admin panel origin rather than direct server compromise. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the signals agree rather than conflict. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N, base 2.1) describes a network-reachable but interaction-dependent flaw with no impact on the vulnerable system itself and only low confidentiality/integrity impact on a subsequent system (the admin's browser session). The AT:P (attack requirement present) and UI:A (active user interaction) metrics correctly capture that an attacker cannot act alone: a logged-in administrator must be socially engineered into submitting a cross-site POST, and the app's lack of a CSRF token is what makes that forgery succeed. There is no CISA KEV listing, and no EPSS score was provided in the input - EPSS data is MISSING and should be checked, though for a reflected XSS in a niche product it would almost certainly be very low. POC status is not explicitly flagged, but a HackMD write-up and a VulnCheck advisory are referenced and likely contain technical detail or a working form; treat public exploit detail as plausibly available. Bottom line: a vendor-patched, low-CVSS reflected XSS that is real but requires targeted phishing of an authenticated admin - patch on a normal cycle rather than treating it as an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker hosts a malicious web page containing an auto-submitting cross-site POST form targeting admin_area/index.php with mode=add_todo and a script payload in the val parameter. They lure a currently logged-in ClipBucket administrator to the page; because the endpoint has no CSRF protection, the forged request is accepted and the unsanitized value is reflected back via nl2br, executing attacker script in the admin panel origin. A technical write-up (HackMD) and a VulnCheck advisory are referenced, so exploitation detail is likely publicly documented. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting in ClipBucket v5 (through 5.5.3-#206) allows an attacker to have arbitrary HTML and script executed in the origin of the admin panel by luring a logged-in administrator into submitting a forged cross-site POST to admin_area/index.php with mode=add_todo and a malicious val parameter; the endpoint carries no CSRF token, and the val value is echoed back through nl2br() without output encoding. The attacker requires no authentication of their own (PR:N in the published CVSS 4.0 vector), but exploitation is not self-executing: it depends on an active administrator session and on that admin being convinced to submit the crafted request (UI:A), and the consequence is script execution inside the admin panel origin rather than direct server compromise. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and there is no evidence of active exploitation; scoring is low (CVSS 4.0 base 2.1; independently assessed as CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N), making this a genuinely low-priority finding whose risk is bounded by the required victim interaction and privileged session.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - apply commit b251858e06ba2895a845497fb2e84fcd083f6f63 from https://github.com/MacWarrior/clipbucket-v5, which replaces nl2br($value) with display_clean($value) in upload/admin_area/index.php so the val parameter is output-encoded, and then verify the change is present in your deployed copy of that file (a tagged release number beyond 5.5.3-#206 is not confirmed in the available data, and the vendor states a patch is available). Where the code cannot be updated immediately, specific compensating controls are: add or enforce a per-session anti-CSRF token (and SameSite=Strict on the session cookie) on admin_area state-changing POST actions such as mode=add_todo - this breaks the forged cross-site form but requires a code change and can invalidate existing admin sessions; restrict /admin_area/ by IP allowlist or an authenticating reverse proxy - effective because the attack needs the victim's browser to reach the admin endpoint, but it blocks legitimate remote administrators and mobile access; deploy a WAF or proxy rule that rejects POSTs to admin_area/index.php containing mode=add_todo with HTML-significant characters in val - quick to apply but easily bypassed by encoding tricks and prone to false positives on legitimate todo text; and enforce a strict Content-Security-Policy (script-src 'self', no 'unsafe-inline') on the admin origin to blunt inline payload execution, accepting that legacy inline JavaScript in ClipBucket may need refactoring first. Also note the missing CSRF protection is a separate design defect: even after patching the XSS sink, harden the admin panel against cross-site request forgery generally, and caution administrators not to submit or click untrusted forms/links while logged into the admin panel. Technical ContextAI · show details
ClipBucket is an open-source PHP video-sharing/streaming platform (packaged by MacWarrior as clipbucket-v5 and tracked under CPE cpe:2.3:a:macwarrior:clipbucket-v5:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), whose administrative console lives under upload/admin_area/. The root cause is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation, i.e. cross-site scripting) combined with a missing anti-CSRF token on the add_todo action: the admin_area/index.php controller takes the attacker-controllable val parameter and renders it back to the browser through nl2br($value), which converts newlines to <br> tags but performs no HTML entity encoding of the surrounding content. Because the response is generated in the admin panel origin, any markup the attacker injects is interpreted with the administrator's session context, giving the script access to that origin's DOM, cookies not marked HttpOnly, and the privileged actions the admin can perform. The absence of a CSRF token is what allows the payload to be delivered via a cross-site POST form rather than requiring the attacker to get the victim to click a same-origin link, so a benign-looking page controlled by the attacker can silently submit mode=add_todo with a crafted val and receive the reflected injection back in the victim's browser. The upstream fix in commit b251858e06ba2895a845497fb2e84fcd083f6f63 is a one-line change replacing nl2br($value) with display_clean($value), i.e. routing the value through ClipBucket's own output-sanitisation helper before it is written into the response.

DescriptionCVE.org
ClipBucket v5 through 5.5.3-#206 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in admin_area/index.php that allows attackers to inject HTML via the val parameter in mode=add_todo. Attackers can lure a logged-in administrator into submitting a cross-site POST form without CSRF protection, executing script in the admin panel origin.
