| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the AD FS sign-in/redirect endpoint to be reachable by the attacker (typically internet-facing in federation deployments) and, critically, requires a victim to click an attacker-crafted AD FS URL whose redirect parameter points to an untrusted site (UI:R). No authentication or privileges are needed by the attacker (PR:N), but the mandatory user interaction and the fact that the attacker cannot directly compromise the server (impact is spoofing/token-theft against the user) are the key limiting factors. Affected builds are specifically Windows Server 2016 (<10.0.14393.9612), 2019 (<10.0.17763.9376), 2022 (<10.0.20348.5761), 2025 (<10.0.26100.33650), and Windows 10 1607/1809 running the AD FS role; systems without the AD FS role deployed are not exploitable. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity open redirect (CWE-601) in Microsoft AD FS carrying a CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.5 with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N. The network vector, low complexity, and no-privilege requirements favor the attacker, but UI:R means a victim must be induced to click a crafted link, which meaningfully lowers automatability and keeps this out of worm/mass-exploitation territory. Notably, the vendor assigned C:H (high confidentiality impact) despite classifying this as 'spoofing' - this is consistent with AD FS's role as a federation/token broker, where an open redirect can be abused to exfiltrate authentication artifacts (e.g. tokens/codes) during the sign-in flow rather than merely displaying a misleading URL; defenders should treat the primary impact as credential/token theft via phishing, not cosmetic redirection. No EPSS score, SSVC decision, KEV listing, or POC was supplied in the input: exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Net assessment: a real but not top-tier priority - patch in the normal expedited cycle. The dependence on user interaction and the absence of any exploitation signal argue against emergency treatment, but the exposed, pre-authentication nature of AD FS (typically internet-facing) and the high confidentiality impact justify prompt remediation over deferral. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious AD FS sign-in URL containing an attacker-controlled redirect parameter and delivers it to a target user via phishing email or a malicious link. The victim, trusting the legitimate AD FS domain, clicks and authenticates, after which they are redirected to the attacker's site - enabling token/credential interception or convincing credential-harvesting spoofing. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data; exploitation requires the victim to interact with the crafted link. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
An open redirect (CWE-601) in Microsoft Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to craft an AD FS sign-in URL whose redirect parameter points to an untrusted site, so a victim who clicks the link is bounced from the trusted federation endpoint to an attacker-controlled destination - spoofing the identity provider. The assessed CVSS 3.1 base score is 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N): the attacker needs no credentials or privileges but must induce user interaction, and impact is confined to confidentiality/session or credential theft against the user rather than server compromise. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV); Microsoft has released patched builds for the affected Windows Server and Windows 10 versions.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: apply the Microsoft security update to move each platform to or above the fixed builds - 10.0.14393.9612 (Windows Server 2016 / Windows 10 1607), 10.0.17763.9376 (Windows Server 2019 / Windows 10 1809), 10.0.20348.5761 (Windows Server 2022) and 10.0.26100.33650 (Windows Server 2025), including Server Core installations - as documented in the MSRC advisory https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-103576; no additional workaround is required once the patched build is installed. If patching must be deferred, reduce exposure of the AD FS sign-in/redirect endpoint by restricting it to managed networks or requiring VPN/reverse-proxy access rather than direct internet exposure (trade-off: breaks external federation and remote sign-in for users outside those networks), and tighten the AD FS relying-party and redirect/reply-URL allow-lists so only known, pre-registered destinations are honoured (trade-off: legitimate applications that rely on dynamic wreply values may need to be re-registered individually). Complement these with monitoring of AD FS sign-in and event logs for redirect parameters pointing to external or lookalike domains, and with user-facing phishing warnings, since the attack still requires a victim to click the crafted AD FS URL.

Technical ContextAI · show details
AD FS is Microsoft's on-premises identity federation role that implements SAML, WS-Federation and OAuth/OIDC passive sign-in flows, typically exposed on an internet-facing AD FS farm behind a Web Application Proxy. Open redirect (CWE-601) arises because the sign-in/redirect handler does not strictly validate the destination parameter (for example wreply / ReturnUrl-style values used to return the user to a relying party after authentication) before issuing an HTTP redirect, letting an attacker substitute an arbitrary untrusted origin. Because the redirect is emitted by the AD FS host itself, the address bar and the initial navigation appear to originate from the trusted identity provider, which is what makes the technique effective for phishing, credential harvesting on lookalike pages, or OAuth/federation token or code redirection - hence the C:H integrity-none availability-none profile in the assessed vector. The CVSS vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U, i.e. remotely reachable with no privileges but requiring a victim to click the crafted URL. The vulnerability only exists where the AD FS role is actually deployed; hosts without the role are not affected, since the vulnerable redirect logic is part of the federation service.
