Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated session as a QNAP administrator on a vulnerable QTS or QuTS hero device (CVSS PR:H), with network reachability to the device's management interface (AV:N) and no user interaction (UI:N); the only configuration prerequisite is that the device is running a pre-fix build in the affected ranges (QTS <5.2.9.3410 build 20260214, QuTS hero <h5.2.9.3410 build 20260214 / <h5.3.4.3500 build 20260520 / <h6.0.0.3397 build 20260206). Practical limits: the attacker must already hold administrator credentials - there is no path described from anonymous or low-privileged access - so devices with admin panel access restricted to a management VLAN, strong unique admin passwords, and 2-step verification materially reduce real-world exploitability.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N, VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) accurately captures the practical risk profile: network-reachable and low-complexity, but gated behind PR:H - the attacker must already hold an administrator account on the NAS. That gating is the dominant risk modifier and is why the 8.6 score, while high, overstates threat for hardened deployments with strong admin credentials and no admin-panel exposure to the internet. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC is provided in the intelligence, and the vulnerability was self-reported by the vendor rather than a third-party researcher disclosing exploitation, all of which point to a patch-now-but-not-emergency posture. The real-world danger concentrates on QNAP devices with internet-exposed admin interfaces, weak/reused admin passwords, or environments where lower-privilege intrusion can be chained into admin takeover - historically a common pattern for QNAP appliances.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker first obtains QNAP administrator credentials - through credential stuffing against an internet-exposed admin portal, phishing of an IT admin, or pivoting from another compromise - then authenticates to the QTS/QuTS hero web console and submits a crafted value to the vulnerable management endpoint, where shell metacharacters break out of the intended command and run attacker-supplied commands as the underlying service user. From there the attacker can deploy ransomware against stored shares, exfiltrate data over the NAS's network access, or install persistence on the appliance. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jun 10, 2026

Authenticated command injection in QNAP QTS and QuTS hero NAS operating systems allows a remote attacker who has already obtained administrator credentials to execute arbitrary OS commands on the appliance. Reported by QNAP itself and tracked as EUVD-2025-210099, the issue affects multiple branches across QTS 5.2.x and QuTS hero 5.2.x, 5.3.x, and 6.0.x and is fixed in builds dated 2026-02-06 through 2026-05-20. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade QTS to 5.2.9.3410 build 20260214 or later, QuTS hero to h5.2.9.3410 build 20260214 or later on the 5.2 branch, h5.3.4.3500 build 20260520 or later on the 5.3 branch, and h6.0.0.3397 build 20260206 or later on the 6.0 branch, as documented at https://www.qnap.com/en/security-advisory/qsa-26-10. Until the firmware update can be applied, restrict the administrative web UI to trusted management networks via the device firewall or an upstream ACL (which will block legitimate remote admin from outside that network), disable any port forwarding or UPnP that exposes the admin port to the internet, and enforce strong, unique admin passwords plus 2-step verification to make the PR:H precondition harder to satisfy; demoting all non-essential accounts off the administrators group also reduces the blast radius if any admin credential is later compromised.

Technical ContextAI · show details

QTS and QuTS hero are QNAP's Linux-based firmware platforms for network-attached storage appliances, exposing a web-based administrative console (typically over HTTP/HTTPS) that wraps numerous shell-backed system management functions. The root cause is CWE-78 (Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command), meaning an administrator-accessible code path in the management surface passes attacker-controlled input into a shell or exec-style call without adequate sanitization, allowing metacharacters to break out of the intended command. The CPE strings cpe:2.3:a:qnap_systems_inc.:qts and cpe:2.3:a:qnap_systems_inc.:quts_hero confirm both the standard QTS firmware and the ZFS-based QuTS hero variant are in scope.

DescriptionCVE.org

A command injection vulnerability has been reported to affect several QNAP operating system versions. If a remote attacker gains an administrator account, they can then exploit the vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands.

We have already fixed the vulnerability in the following versions: QTS 5.2.9.3410 build 20260214 and later QuTS hero h5.2.9.3410 build 20260214 and later QuTS hero h5.3.4.3500 build 20260520 and later QuTS hero h6.0.0.3397 build 20260206 and later

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A command injection vulnerability in QNAP QTS and QuTS hero NAS systems (CVE-2025-66273) could allow attackers with stolen administrator credentials to execute arbitrary operating system commands on storage appliances. Organizations relying on QNAP NAS for data storage face potential data exfiltration, system manipulation, and operational disruption if administrative accounts are compromised.
