Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires the nvme-rdma host driver to be loaded and the host actively connected to an NVMe-oF target over an RDMA fabric (RoCE/iWARP/InfiniBand). The faulty path only executes when nvme_rdma_queue_rq returns -EIO - a transient RDMA/fabric command-submission failure that is not directly attacker-controllable. Exploitation is limited by: this being an error path (AC:H), the local-only vector (AV:L), the need for privileges to interact with the NVMe I/O path (PR:L), and the niche NVMe-oF/RDMA deployment requirement. It cannot be triggered against a default host that has no NVMe-oF/RDMA connectivity.

Impact

This is a classic high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk kernel error-path bug, consistent with the entire recent NVD 7.0 batch of Linux nvme/storage fixes. The CVSS vector (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) already concedes local access, high complexity, and required privileges, yet still inflates all three impact metrics to High. In reality this is a cleanup-ordering defect: on an -EIO in nvme_rdma_queue_rq, the host-path-error helper completes and frees the request, and the code THEN runs the outer command cleanup and unmaps the SQE DMA again - a double cleanup / double DMA-unmap AFTER the request is already complete. That is a memory-corruption / use-after-complete condition whose realistic outcome is a crash or corruption (DoS), not information disclosure. The 'Information Disclosure' tag is therefore mislabeled; confidentiality impact is not credible (C:N), and integrity impact is at most incidental corruption (I:L). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present. Critically, the -EIO trigger is a transient RDMA/fabric submission failure, not an attacker-controlled input, so even a local privileged user cannot reliably drive this path on demand - confirming AC:H and low real-world priority. Net: patch on normal stable-kernel cadence; not an emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a host running the nvme-rdma driver and connected to an NVMe-oF target over RDMA, a transient fabric/RDMA submission error causes queue_rq to return -EIO; the host-path-error helper completes and frees the request while the outer cleanup path then unmaps the SQE DMA and cleans the already-freed command, corrupting kernel memory and typically crashing the node. No public exploit exists, and because the -EIO path is not attacker-controlled, reliable triggering is impractical.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

The Linux kernel's nvme-rdma host driver mishandles command teardown when a queue_rq submission returns -EIO, unmapping SQE DMA and cleaning up the block-layer request after the host-path-error helper has already completed that request. The result is a double cleanup of the nvme-rdma command and blk-mq request plus a DMA unmap against an already-completed request, which can corrupt request/command state, trigger a kernel crash or denial of service, and - per the assessed vector - cause limited integrity impact. Only hosts running the nvme-rdma driver while connected to an NVMe-oF target over an RDMA fabric (RoCE, iWARP or InfiniBand) are exposed, and the faulting branch only executes on a transient RDMA command-submission failure that is not directly attacker-controllable; the local, high-complexity, privileged nature of the trigger makes real-world risk substantially lower than the base score suggests, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released kernel updates that contain the reordered cleanup: upgrade to Linux 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc2, or cherry-pick the upstream stable fixes d61828199c6cb4b76d48403c77023cd4bb9d09fc, 171b993a4aed9889159df4815b6a6ba141e61975, a41e7fc8d244d9cfc6273051aed85b67adedbb89 or cf3e706963ffbd3ee2568fa0d08ab016f0575ea8 (https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/a41e7fc8d244d9cfc6273051aed85b67adedbb89, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/cf3e706963ffbd3ee2568fa0d08ab016f0575ea8, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/171b993a4aed9889159df4815b6a6ba141e61975, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d61828199c6cb4b76d48403c77023cd4bb9d09fc). Because the defect lives strictly in a driver error path and is not triggered by attacker-supplied input, there is no clean configuration toggle that fully removes exposure; the practical compensating controls are to avoid loading nvme-rdma on hosts that do not need NVMe-oF over RDMA (modprobe blacklist nvme_rdma, or ensure the module is not autoloaded), which trades away remote NVMe storage access entirely, and to treat any sustained RDMA command-submission errors as an operational signal - if a connected host begins returning -EIO on the nvme-rdma queue path before patching, disconnect it from the fabric (nvme disconnect) and reload the module to avoid repeated double-cleanup cycles, accepting the loss of that storage path for the duration. Scheduling the patch during a normal maintenance window is appropriate given the assessed local, high-complexity trigger; no emergency mitigation is warranted. Technical ContextAI · show details

NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) lets a host speak NVMe to a remote target across a fabric; with nvme-rdma the transport is RDMA (RoCE, iWARP or InfiniBand), implemented in drivers/nvme/host/rdma.c. When the block layer dispatches a request, nvme_rdma_queue_rq maps the SQE/SGL into an RDMA memory region (DMA map), posts the command to the queue pair, and on failure returns an error such as -EIO. In the flawed version, that -EIO path first invoked the host path error reporting helper (which completes the request) and then continued into the normal command cleanup and nvme_rdma_unmap_data, so the request was completed twice and the SQE DMA mapping torn down after completion. That is a double-cleanup / use-after-completion class defect (the CVE carries no CWE mapping, but the pattern is consistent with CWE-415 double free and CWE-416 use-after-free style bugs). The upstream fix reorders the path: the SQE DMA mapping is released first, the host path error is reported second, and the outer command cleanup is skipped on that branch. The change is attributed to the Linux kernel project and introduces a prerequisite code path dating back to at least the 5.12 kernel series (upstream commit 62eca39722fd997e3621fc903229917b9f0fb271 appears as the lower bound in the EUVD version data), meaning a broad range of stable and long-term branches inherited the bug before the backports below were published.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

nvme-rdma: fix -EIO cleanup order in queue_rq

On -EIO, the RDMA queue_rq path reports a host path error and then still cleans up the command and unmaps the SQE DMA. The path error helper completes the request, so that is double cleanup and DMA unmap after the request is already complete.

Unmap the SQE first, then report the host path error. Skip the outer command cleanup on that path.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

The Linux kernel's nvme-rdma host driver contains a high-severity flaw that can cause kernel crashes, denial of service, and limited integrity issues on systems using NVMe over RDMA fabrics. Organizations running RDMA-backed NVMe storage (RoCE, iWARP, or InfiniBand) for critical workloads could experience availability disruptions if the vulnerable code path is triggered. The trigger requires a local, privileged, high-complexity condition and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, so broad exploitation is unlikely, but unpatched hosts still warrant prioritized remediation.
