Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires local access to the AMD KFD compute interface (the /dev/kfd render/device node) on a system running an AMD GPU with the amdkfd driver and ROCm/compute workloads active. Exploitation depends on winning a race: the attacker must trigger a queue destroy concurrently with a queue resume so that destroy_queue_cpsch() frees the queue during the lock-drop window in wait_on_destroy_queue(). Limiting factors: no remote reach (AV:L), local low-privilege GPU-device access is needed (PR:L), the race window is narrow and timing-dependent (raising practical attack complexity), and systems without AMD GPUs or without the KFD compute path enabled are not affected.

Impact

This is a CWE-416 use-after-free race in the Linux amdkfd (AMD Kernel Fusion Driver / ROCm compute) queue-destruction path: wait_on_destroy_queue() drops locks while waiting for queue resume, letting a concurrent destroy_queue_cpsch() free the queue that is then dereferenced. The NVD/Linux CVSS of 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) overstates real-world risk for two reasons. First, AC:L is optimistic - the flaw is a lock-drop race window that requires two threads concurrently destroying/resuming the same KFD queue with precise timing, which in practice is AC:H and not reliably repeatable. Second, C:H/I:H/A:H treats a UAF as full disclosure+integrity+availability; realistically this is a crash-dominant memory-corruption bug whose most likely outcome is a kernel oops/DoS, with information disclosure only theoretical. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC, so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. My assessed severity is ~5.x. Note the CVSS attack vector (AV:L, local) is consistent with the description - local GPU-device access is genuinely required - so there is no network/local conflict here. Overall: a legitimate local memory-safety fix worth patching on AMD-GPU compute hosts, but not an urgent, widely-exploitable priority.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user with access to the AMD KFD device (render node) issues concurrent queue-destroy and queue-resume operations to hit the narrow lock-drop window in wait_on_destroy_queue(), causing one thread to free the queue while another still references it. Winning the race triggers a use-after-free that most likely crashes the kernel (DoS); reliable code execution or data leakage would require additional heap-grooming primitives. No public exploit code exists.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

A use-after-free race in the Linux kernel's amdkfd (AMD KFD compute) queue destruction path lets a local user who can access the AMD GPU compute interface free a queue while it is still being dereferenced. The flaw sits in wait_on_destroy_queue(), which drops its locks while waiting for a queue to resume, creating a window in which a concurrent destroy_queue_cpsch() can free the same queue; the fix serializes destruction using the is_being_destroyed flag. Affected systems are those running an AMD GPU with the KFD/ROCm compute path active on kernel versions before 6.12.111 / 6.18.53 (fixed in 7.2); exploitation requires local low-privilege access, a favorable race outcome, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released kernel fix: upgrade to Linux 6.12.111, Linux 6.18.53, or the 7.2 patch line (or later stable kernels containing the backports referenced by fix commits 41144829f4645c2bd4cb501d34d253858f750c0a, d98c8032c29944e1e572e1f49a0613d364fece0f, and ac081deaf16a639ea7dff2f285fe421a33c1ade0); distribution kernels will carry the update through their normal stable release channels and advisory pages linked from https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-97429. If immediate patching is not possible, restrict which local users and containers can open /dev/kfd and submit KFD compute queues (for example by tightening device-node ownership/permissions and dropping the device from untrusted container device allowlists), which materially shrinks the pool of principals able to win the race at the cost of breaking ROCm/GPU compute for those users; similarly, disabling the amdkfd/ROCm compute path or blacklisting the amdgpu KFD interface on non-compute hosts removes exposure entirely but disables GPU compute acceleration. Note that the race requires precise concurrency between a queue destroy and a queue resume, so simply reducing untrusted local access is a meaningful interim control while the kernel update is staged and rebooted.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The AMD Kernel Fusion Driver (amdkfd) exposes the GPU compute queue management interface used by ROCm workloads, reachable from userspace through the /dev/kfd device node. Queue lifecycle operations such as destroy_queue_cpsch() and its helper wait_on_destroy_queue() are concurrency-sensitive: the helper intentionally releases its locks while polling for a queue to leave the resume state, which means a second thread invoking the destroy path can free the queue object before the first thread resumes and dereferences it. This is a classic CWE-416 use-after-free caused by an insufficiently protected critical section under a race condition, and it belongs to the broader class of GPU/DRM driver lifetime-management bugs where outstanding references are not validated across a lock-drop. The upstream resolution introduces an is_being_destroyed flag so that queue destruction is serialized and a queue cannot be freed while another destroy path still holds a reference to it. Per the affected CPE data the impacted component ships as part of the core Linux kernel package (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux), so exposure follows kernel version rather than a separately installable AMD package; only hosts with an AMD GPU and the KFD compute path enabled load the vulnerable code.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/amdkfd: fix UAF race in destroy_queue_cpsch

wait_on_destroy_queue() drops locks to wait for queue resume, allowing a concurrent destroy to free the queue. Use is_being_destroyed flag to serialize destruction.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's AMD GPU compute driver (amdkfd) could allow a local user with access to the GPU compute interface to escalate privileges or crash affected systems. Organizations running AMD GPUs on vulnerable kernel versions (prior to 6.12.111, 6.18.53, or 7.2) are at risk, though no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Leadership should prioritize patching to prevent potential insider threats or compromised accounts from gaining elevated access.
