DescriptionCVE.org

A security issue exists within the Redundancy Module Configuration Tool. The RMConfigTool.exe binary searches directories in the system path for a required DLL, and one or more of these directories may be writable by standard (non-administrator) users due to incorrect default permissions. If a local attacker places a malicious DLL in such a directory and an administrator subsequently runs the tool, the malicious DLL is loaded into the elevated process and executes with Administrator/SYSTEM privileges.

AnalysisAI

Privilege escalation in Rockwell Automation's Redundancy Module Configuration Tool (RMConfigTool.exe) enables a local standard user to execute arbitrary code with Administrator or SYSTEM privileges via DLL search order hijacking. The tool searches system PATH directories for required DLLs, and one or more of those directories have incorrect default permissions allowing write access by non-privileged accounts; if a malicious DLL is planted there before an administrator runs the tool, it loads into the elevated process. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the attacker to already hold a standard (non-administrator) local user account on the Windows host where RMConfigTool.exe is installed - no remote access vector exists. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 7.0 with vector AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P accurately captures the attack's profile: local-only vector with low complexity but a hard dependency on passive administrator interaction (UI:P) that prevents fully autonomous exploitation. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Consult Rockwell Automation's advisory SD1800 at https://www.rockwellautomation.com/en-us/trust-center/security-advisories/advisory.SD1800.html for an updated installer or patch that corrects the default directory permissions. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
