Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated RosarioSIS account of any privilege level (PR:L) - realistically an insider, a compromised student/teacher/staff credential, or an attacker who can self-register. Exploitation targets the file-deletion functionality of the Users and Students modules specifically, by supplying a filename request parameter containing parent-directory ('../') traversal sequences. No user interaction beyond the attacker's own request is needed and no special non-default configuration is required, but the account requirement is the primary limiting factor - this is not remotely exploitable by fully unauthenticated attackers. Affects RosarioSIS versions before 12.9; upgrading to 12.9 remediates.

Impact

This is a moderate-priority, authentication-gated integrity/availability issue rather than a critical remote-code flaw. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:L) scores 7.1 and is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, but requiring an authenticated low-privileged account (PR:L). Impact is data destruction (arbitrary file deletion), not disclosure or code execution - VC:N confirms no confidentiality loss. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no vendor-confirmed active exploitation were provided, so there is no signal of widespread automated exploitation. However, a public gist (kazisabu) and a specific vendor patch commit are referenced, meaning working exploit detail is effectively public even though it is not formally tracked as a POC feed entry. SSVC-style read: exploitation is 'proof-of-concept level' (public write-up exists, not confirmed in-the-wild), automatable given it is a simple parameterized request, and technical impact is partial (destructive but not full system takeover). The key limiting factor is the PR:L requirement - an attacker needs a valid RosarioSIS account, which sharply narrows the realistic threat to insiders, compromised student/staff credentials, or self-registration scenarios. This tempers the 7.1 score in practice.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated RosarioSIS user (e.g., a student, teacher, or staff account) submits a request to the Users or Students file-management endpoint with a crafted filename parameter containing '../' parent-directory sequences. The application fails to validate the path, so the deletion escapes the intended upload directory and removes arbitrary allow-listed files - CSS, XML, JSON resources, or other users' uploaded documents - anywhere in the installation. A public write-up (gist by kazisabu) documenting the technique exists, though this is a public analysis rather than a KEV-confirmed exploitation.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 17, 2026

Authenticated path traversal in RosarioSIS before version 12.9 lets any logged-in user (student, teacher, or staff) delete allow-listed files anywhere in the installation by inserting parent-directory ('../') sequences into the filename request parameter of the file-deletion functionality in the Users and Students modules. The impact is primarily integrity (I:H) with a limited availability effect (A:L), no confidentiality exposure, and no user interaction required, but exploitation is gated by a valid account (PR:L), so risk is moderate rather than critical. No public exploit code was identified at the time of analysis, and the issue is remediated by upgrading to 12.9.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade RosarioSIS to 12.9 or later, which is the version that carries the fix; administrators tracking the source tree can additionally apply the upstream fix commit 701f9c07330157181362927a40d4f8dcc8094d90 (https://gitlab.com/francoisjacquet/rosariosis/-/commit/701f9c07330157181362927a40d4f8dcc8094d90) and confirm the change against the vendor advisory links above. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, the highest-value compensating control is to remove the ability of untrusted accounts to reach the vulnerable deletion paths: restrict or disable the delete-file actions in the Users and Students modules for non-administrative roles and disable self-registration so that an outsider cannot obtain the low-privilege account this attack requires - the trade-off is loss of self-service file management for those roles until patching is complete. Tightening filesystem permissions so the web-server user cannot write or delete application resources (CSS, XML, JSON) and other users' upload directories reduces blast radius but can break legitimate uploads and deletions depending on how ownership is delegated, so test it in staging first. Deploying a WAF or reverse-proxy rule that rejects request parameters containing '../' or encoded traversal sequences on those module endpoints provides short-term blocking with the caveat that it may be bypassed by encoding tricks and must not be treated as a substitute for the patch. Finally, retain known-good backups and enable file-integrity monitoring on the RosarioSIS installation so that any deletion of shared resources or other users' documents is detected and can be restored quickly; this is a detection and recovery measure, not a preventive one.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory, i.e. path traversal) in the file-deletion code path of the Users and Students modules. The application is intended to unlink only allow-listed resources, but it fails to normalize and validate the filename request parameter, so an attacker-supplied value containing '../' sequences resolves outside the intended upload directory and the unlink operation is applied to whatever path the traversal resolves to. Because the affected routine is a deletion primitive rather than a read or write primitive, the security consequence is destructive: CSS, XML, and JSON resources belonging to the application and documents uploaded by other users can be removed regardless of ownership, which degrades the installation's integrity and, in the case of shared resources, its availability. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:rosariosis:rosariosis:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is unbounded, meaning the vendor's CPE naming does not encode a version range; the version boundary comes from the description and the vendor fix, which is the commit that shipped in 12.9. The CVSS:4.0 vector supplied by the source (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:L) and the independent CVSS:3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:L) agree on the essentials: network-reachable, low complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, high integrity impact, and low availability impact.

DescriptionCVE.org

RosarioSIS versions before 12.9 fail to validate the filename request parameter in Users and Students modules, allowing authenticated users to unlink allow-listed files via path traversal. Attackers can use parent-directory sequences to escape upload directories and delete CSS, XML, JSON resources and other users' documents throughout the installation.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

RosarioSIS deployments prior to version 12.9 are exposed to an authenticated file-deletion flaw that could allow any logged-in student, teacher, or staff member to remove allow-listed files across the installation. This creates integrity and limited availability risk for school operations that rely on the platform, though exploitation requires valid credentials and no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Leadership should prioritize upgrading to 12.9 and reviewing file-integrity monitoring because the affected user base is broad and the potential for disruption or data loss is material.
