MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) component/service to be present and reachable on the target Windows system, and the attacker must already possess a local, authenticated low-privilege account on that host (CVSS PR:L, AV:L). This is strictly a local escalation: there is no network vector (AV:L) and no user interaction is needed (UI:N), but the absence of remote reach and the need for a pre-existing foothold are the key limiting factors that cap real-world risk. Exposure is further bounded to Windows builds below the fixed versions listed in EUVD-2026-100091 (e.g., Windows 11 24H2 before 10.0.26100.9711, Windows Server 2022 before 10.0.20348.5761); patched builds are not affected, and hosts where the WebDAV client/service is disabled present a reduced attack surface. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but not emergency-level priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 7.8 HIGH) describes a local privilege-escalation flaw: the attacker must already have a foothold on the host with some low-level privileges (PR:L), after which low-complexity exploitation yields total confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact - consistent with escalation to SYSTEM. The signals are internally consistent and point AWAY from mass exploitation: CISA SSVC reports Exploitation=none and Automatable=no, no EPSS score was supplied, the input shows no KEV listing, and no POC is referenced. The one tension is the CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) / local-EoP nature versus the 'Authentication Bypass' tag in the input, which mischaracterizes an authorization/privilege-boundary issue as an authentication bypass - treat that tag with caution. Technical Impact is rated 'total,' so successful exploitation is severe, but the local vector plus pre-existing privilege requirement means this is a second-stage/post-compromise escalation, not an internet-facing entry point. Prioritize via normal Patch-Tuesday-grade servicing for Windows fleets rather than out-of-band emergency response, while recognizing its high value to any attacker who already has code execution on a Windows host. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has already gained a low-privileged foothold on a Windows host - for example through a phishing payload or a compromised standard user account - invokes the WebDAV component and abuses its improper access control (missing authorization) to perform operations outside their privilege level. Because the CVSS vector reports S:U with C:H/I:H/A:H and SSVC rates technical impact as 'total,' the result is escalation to SYSTEM-level control of the machine. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, and exploitation is local and not automatable, so this requires an existing local presence rather than remote access. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Improper access control in the WebDAV component of Microsoft Windows lets a locally authenticated low-privilege user elevate privileges to full system integrity, giving complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability on the affected host. Exploitation is strictly local (AV:L) with a valid low-privileged account and no user interaction (PR:L, UI:N); there is no remote or network vector, and the attacker must already hold a foothold on the machine, which caps real-world risk. Microsoft has released a vendor patch, no public exploit code has been identified, and CISA's SSVC assessment records exploitation as "none" and automatable as "no", so this is a genuine but not emergency-level priority. Affected builds are all Windows client and server releases below the fixed build numbers catalogued in EUVD-2026-100091, and hosts that have the WebClient/WebDAV service disabled have a materially reduced attack surface.
RemediationAI
Apply the Microsoft security update distributed through Windows Update, Windows Server Update Services, or the Microsoft Update Catalog as documented in the MSRC advisory for CVE-2026-88135 (https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-88135); this is the only complete fix, since the vulnerability is an access-control defect in the WebDAV component itself. Target the exact fixed builds from EUVD-2026-100091 for each branch you run, for example Windows 11 24H2 at 10.0.26100.9711 or later, Windows 11 23H2 at 10.0.22631.7652 or later, Windows Server 2022 at 10.0.20348.5761 or later, Windows 10 1809 / Windows Server 2019 at 10.0.17763.9376 or later, Windows 10 1607 / Windows Server 2016 at 10.0.14393.9612 or later, and Windows Server 2025 at 10.0.26100.33650 or later; note that Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 fixes (6.2.9200.26434 and 6.3.9600.23470) require those platforms to be covered by Extended Security Updates. If immediate patching is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to disable the WebDAV client by setting the WebClient service startup type to Disabled (registry value Start = 4 under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient), which removes the local attack surface but breaks mapped WebDAV drives, UNC WebDAV paths, and some SharePoint/Office document-opening workflows that rely on the redirector. On servers, remove or stop the WebDAV Publishing role service in IIS if it is not required, accepting that any legitimate WebDAV publishing stops working. Because exploitation requires an existing low-privileged local account, enforcing least privilege, limiting interactive logon and local account sprawl, and monitoring for unusual WebDAV method activity (PROPFIND, PROPPATCH, MOVE, LOCK) from non-administrative sessions further reduces practical risk; none of these workarounds should be treated as a substitute for installing the vendor patch.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is classified CWE-862 (Missing Authorization), meaning the Windows WebDAV implementation does not enforce the expected authorization checks before performing privileged operations on behalf of the caller. WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning, RFC 4918) extends HTTP with methods such as PROPFIND, PROPPATCH, MKCOL, COPY, MOVE, and LOCK, and on Windows it is exposed through the WebClient service (webclnt.dll), which presents remote WebDAV shares as local drive letters and UNC paths to the redirector. Because the vulnerable check is an access-control decision rather than a memory-safety defect, a local, authenticated low-privilege principal can drive the WebDAV component into executing an operation it should have rejected, converting a standard user token into elevated privileges across the confidentiality, integrity, and availability triad. The tag "Authentication Bypass" aligns with this access-control failure mode. The CVSS:3.1 vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H confirms the three defining constraints of this issue: local attack path only, no user interaction required, and a prior low-privileged account as a prerequisite; the scope remains unchanged, so the compromise stays within the host's security authority.

Local vector and pre-existing low-privilege account give AV:L/PR:L; straightforward abuse of missing authorization is AC:L; escalation to SYSTEM yields C:H/I:H/A:H with unchanged scope.

Improper access control in WebDAV allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.
Executive ViewAI
A privilege-escalation flaw in the WebDAV/WebClient component of Microsoft Windows could let an attacker who already holds a low-privileged account on a machine take full control of that host, compromising its data, applications, and availability. Because exploitation requires an existing local foothold rather than remote network access, the practical exposure is concentrated in shared, multi-user, or already-compromised endpoints and servers rather than being an organization-wide remote threat. Microsoft has shipped a fix and no public exploit code or active exploitation has been observed, so this should be handled as a prioritized, scheduled patching item rather than an emergency.
