Exploitation Conditions

The attacker must hold low-privilege access to the SiYuan workspace sufficient to place or upload text-based asset files (PR:L per CVSS 4.0); external unauthenticated exploitation is not possible. The victim must actively trigger the search asset preview feature and view the crafted asset in the preview panel (UI:A per CVSS 4.0) - passive browsing without previewing the asset does not trigger the payload. The vulnerability is confined to the search asset preview rendering path; normal document editing and rendering are not reported as affected. Exploitation is further bounded to users sharing the same SiYuan instance and workspace.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.4 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:A/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N) is a reasonable characterization of this stored XSS: network-reachable, low attacker complexity, but constrained by both a low-privilege workspace access requirement (PR:L) and mandatory victim interaction to trigger the preview (UI:A). No public exploit code has been identified and SiYuan is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog at time of analysis, which lowers immediate exploitation urgency compared to the raw score. EPSS data was not included in the source intelligence, so automated exploitation probability cannot be quantified. The meaningful limiting factor is PR:L - an external, unauthenticated attacker cannot exploit this without first gaining workspace membership; however, even a mid-sized municipal IT team in leszno running a shared SiYuan instance for collaborative note-taking should treat this as urgent because the payload delivers full authenticated API access once triggered, enabling silent exfiltration of all indexed workspace content. The high C/I impact metrics are well-grounded given that SiYuan's API exposes notebook content, configuration, and asset management endpoints accessible from the victim's session.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged workspace member crafts a plain-text file embedding an HTML or JavaScript payload and uploads it to a shared SiYuan workspace. When a victim searches the workspace and the asset preview panel renders the file, SiYuan passes the raw content to innerHTML, executing the attacker's script within the SiYuan browser origin. The script can then silently call SiYuan's authenticated REST API to enumerate notebooks, exfiltrate note content, or modify workspace data - all without further attacker interaction.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 09, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in SiYuan's search asset preview feature allows authenticated workspace members to inject and execute arbitrary JavaScript in other users' browser sessions. All SiYuan releases before v3.8.2 are affected; the flaw stems from unescaped asset content passed directly to innerHTML during search preview rendering. Successful exploitation grants the attacker authenticated API access within the SiYuan origin, enabling workspace data exfiltration and content manipulation on behalf of the victim.

RemediationAI

Upgrade SiYuan to version 3.8.2 or later, which resolves the innerHTML sanitization defect per the vendor security advisory GHSA-64gp-333q-mq6j (https://github.com/siyuan-note/siyuan/security/advisories/GHSA-64gp-333q-mq6j). If immediate upgrade is operationally infeasible, restrict workspace membership strictly to fully trusted users, since exploitation requires the attacker to place crafted files within the shared workspace - removing untrusted members eliminates the threat vector. If the search asset preview feature can be disabled in SiYuan's configuration, doing so would eliminate the specific vulnerable attack surface at the cost of reduced asset discoverability. Network-layer controls cannot mitigate this vulnerability because the payload executes entirely client-side within the victim's browser after the malicious asset is already resident in the workspace.

Technical ContextAI · show details

SiYuan (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:siyuan-note:siyuan) is a local-first personal knowledge management application that indexes workspace assets and renders previews through a browser-based interface. The search asset preview subsystem inserts indexed text-asset content into the DOM using the innerHTML property, which parses raw HTML markup including script elements and inline event handlers rather than treating content as plain text. CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) precisely describes this root cause: the application fails to escape or sanitize user-controlled content before it reaches an HTML sink. Because SiYuan operates within a consistent browser origin, script execution triggered via this path inherits the full authenticated session context, including access to SiYuan's internal JavaScript API layer for workspace management.

DescriptionCVE.org

SiYuan before v3.8.2 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in the search asset preview feature that fails to escape indexed asset content before inserting it into the DOM using innerHTML. Attackers who can place crafted text assets in a workspace can execute JavaScript in the SiYuan origin when victims preview the assets, enabling authenticated API requests and workspace manipulation.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

SiYuan versions before v3.8.2 allow any workspace member to compromise other users' browser sessions through a stored code-injection attack in the search feature. A malicious insider or compromised account could steal sensitive workspace data or manipulate shared documents without detection, affecting all users within the collaborative environment. This insider risk exposure is particularly acute for organizations using SiYuan to share intellectual property, financial data, or strategic information.
