Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target application runs undici 8.10.0 or 8.10.1 AND wires either the cache interceptor or the request-deduplication interceptor directly onto a Client or Pool instance (for example, via Client.compose() or Pool.compose() with cacheInterceptor or deduplicateInterceptor). Applications that instantiate an Agent and compose interceptors there are not affected, because the Agent propagates the origin through its dispatch options. The attacker must additionally be able to issue or pre-cache an HTTP response whose method, path, and relevant headers match a request the application will subsequently make to a distinct trusted origin. No attacker authentication or elevated privileges are required, but the specific Client/Pool interceptor-composition pattern must be present in the application.

Impact

The CVSS 7.4 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) accurately characterizes the balance of factors: exploitation is remote and requires no attacker credentials, but the high attack complexity reflects a genuine prerequisite - the vulnerable interceptor-composition pattern (Client/Pool, not Agent) must be present in the application code. The confidentiality (C:H) and integrity (I:H) impacts are well-supported by the demonstrated auth-bypass scenario. No EPSS score was provided in the input data, and this CVE does not appear in CISA KEV, indicating no confirmed in-the-wild exploitation at time of analysis. Despite the absence of KEV and public exploit code, the narrow version window (8.10.0-8.10.1), the availability of an exact patch (8.10.2), and the severity of the demonstrated impact mean that even a mid-sized municipal IT team in olsztyn should treat this as urgent if they deploy undici with the affected interceptor pattern. The primary limiting factor on real-world exposure is that applications using an Agent - the more common and documented composition pattern - are fully unaffected, and the vulnerable window spans only two minor releases.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker pre-stages a cacheable HTTP request to an attacker-controlled origin whose method, path, and headers match a request the victim application is known to make to a trusted upstream service. Because undici 8.10.0-8.10.1 caches the response under an empty origin key, the next time the application sends the same request to the trusted service, it receives the attacker's pre-staged response without ever contacting the trusted origin. In the demonstrated scenario, the attacker substitutes a JWT signed with their own key, which the application accepts as valid because the trusted identity provider is bypassed entirely via the poisoned cache entry.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 04, 2026

Cross-origin cache key confusion in undici 8.10.0 and 8.10.1 allows unauthenticated network attackers to receive responses intended for a different upstream origin and to persistently poison the cache with attacker-controlled content. When the cache or request-deduplication interceptor is composed directly onto a Client or Pool instance, the origin is silently dropped from the key and falls back to an empty string, meaning any two origins sharing the same HTTP method, path, and relevant headers share a single cache slot. The OpenJS Foundation reporter demonstrated full authentication bypass in which a JWT signed with an attacker-controlled key was accepted in place of a trusted issuer's token because the trusted origin was never contacted; no public exploit code has been released at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade undici to version 8.10.2, the vendor-confirmed patched release, which restores the destination origin to the cache and deduplication key even when interceptors are attached directly to a Client or Pool. No additional configuration changes are required. If an immediate upgrade is blocked, the primary structural workaround is to refactor the HTTP client instantiation to use an Agent rather than a bare Client or Pool when composing the cache or deduplicate interceptors - this restores origin-aware dispatch and eliminates the root cause without waiting for a package update, though it may require minor API adjustments in the calling code. The advisory is available at https://github.com/nodejs/undici/security/advisories/GHSA-vp8m-p9jh-q5pm. No generic network-layer mitigations (firewall rules, WAF signatures) meaningfully address this flaw because the confusion occurs within the application's own cache, not at the transport layer.

Technical ContextAI · show details

undici is Node.js's first-party HTTP client library (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:undici:undici) and serves as a transitive dependency for widely-used frameworks including Fastify and Next.js, as well as being the HTTP backend for Node's native fetch(). The regression (CWE-346: Origin Validation Error) was introduced in version 8.10.0 in the cache and request-deduplication interceptors. When these interceptors are composed onto a Client or Pool object, the interceptor context does not carry the destination origin - unlike an Agent dispatch, which explicitly passes the origin through its dispatch options. The resulting key is therefore origin-agnostic, collapsing distinct upstream services into the same cache namespace whenever their request signatures (method, path, headers) match. The root cause is a missing origin component in the cache-key construction path for the Client/Pool composition code path.

DescriptionCVE.org

undici 8.10.0 omits the destination origin from the cache and request-deduplication keys when the cache or deduplicate interceptor is composed directly onto a Client or Pool. Because the internal cache key falls back to an empty origin string, a cacheable or in-flight response from one upstream origin is returned for a request to a different, trusted origin whenever the method, path, and relevant headers match, which permits cross-origin information disclosure and persistent cache poisoning. The reporter demonstrated a full authentication bypass in which a JWT signed with an attacker-controlled key was accepted as belonging to a trusted issuer, and the trusted origin was never contacted. This is a regression introduced in 8.10.0 and affects undici versions from 8.10.0 up to 8.10.2. Applications using an Agent, which carries the origin in its dispatch options, are not affected. Users should upgrade to undici 8.10.2.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Undici 8.10.0 and 8.10.1, a critical Node.js HTTP client library, contains a cache-key confusion vulnerability enabling unauthenticated attackers to intercept API responses and forge authentication tokens without valid credentials. Organizations running these versions face immediate risk of unauthorized access to protected resources and data theft across interconnected services sharing the cache. Urgent inventory and downgrade of affected Node.js applications is required.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Until patch is available: (1) Downgrade undici to version 8.9.x or earlier; (2) Disable HTTP caching for all endpoints handling authentication tokens or credentials; (3) Implement origin-specific cache isolation at application layer; (4) Deploy strict cache-control headers preventing cross-origin cache reuse. Monitor actively for vendor patch release-these mitigations are temporary only.

Attack Technique

Authentication bypass attacks exploit flaws in the verification mechanisms that control access to systems and applications.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
