DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in rpmuncompress. This command injection vulnerability allows a local attacker to execute arbitrary commands. This occurs when rpmuncompress processes a specially crafted archive filename containing shell metacharacters, which are not properly escaped before being passed to shell command strings. Successful exploitation requires user interaction, where a user or automated workflow invokes rpmuncompress on the malicious file, leading to high impact on the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data accessible to the invoking user.

AnalysisAI

Command injection in rpmuncompress allows a local attacker to execute arbitrary commands under the invoking user's context by supplying an archive file whose filename contains shell metacharacters. Affecting all actively supported Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions (6 through 10) and Red Hat Hardened Images, the flaw is triggered when a user or automated build pipeline invokes rpmuncompress on a maliciously named archive. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation An attacker must be able to place or supply an archive whose filename contains shell metacharacters into a location where a target user or automated process will invoke rpmuncompress on it - typically via a download, a shared artifact store, a compromised dependency mirror, or social engineering. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) yields a score of 7.8, reflecting low local attack complexity, no system privilege requirement, and full C/I/A impact bounded by the scope of the invoking user's permissions. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Monitor the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-84838 and apply the RPM errata packages when released through the Red Hat Customer Portal or subscription channels. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, audit all systems running RHEL 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 to identify deployment of rpmuncompress in build, deployment, or artifact-processing workflows; search logs for archive processing with shell metacharacters in filenames. …
