HTTPX2 is a next generation HTTP client for Python. From 2.5.0 until 2.10.0, the HTTPX2 Server-Sent Events parser in src/httpx2/httpx2/_sse.py repeatedly copies and rescans buffered text in _SSELineDecoder.decode() when an attacker-controlled or compromised SSE endpoint splits one unterminated line across many response chunks. The behavior affects httpx2.Client.sse() and httpx2.AsyncClient.sse(), and the total processing work grows quadratically with the line length, allowing a crafted stream to consume excessive CPU and block a synchronous worker or asynchronous event loop. This issue is fixed in version 2.10.0.
AnalysisAI
Quadratic CPU exhaustion in HTTPX2's Server-Sent Events parser allows a malicious or compromised SSE endpoint to deny service to Python applications using httpx2.Client.sse() or httpx2.AsyncClient.sse() in versions 2.5.0 through 2.9.x. The _SSELineDecoder.decode() method in _sse.py repeatedly copies and rescans its entire in-memory buffer each time a new chunk arrives for an unterminated line, producing O(n²) processing work proportional to the length of the crafted line. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | The target application must be running HTTPX2 version 2.5.0 through 2.9.x and must invoke httpx2.Client.sse() or httpx2.AsyncClient.sse() - the vulnerability exists only on the SSE code path, not on ordinary HTTP requests. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 3.1 vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H accurately reflects the threat model: the attack is network-delivered and requires no privileges, but AC:H captures the non-trivial prerequisite that the attacker must control or have compromised the SSE endpoint the client connects to. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to HTTPX2 version 2.10.0, which is the vendor-released patch confirmed by the tagged GitHub release at https://github.com/pydantic/httpx2/releases/tag/v2.10.0 and the associated commit cbfc0e04ef6507da29ccbb3b9c2e5b23dd693414. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
