| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a victim who is currently authenticated to the Guardium Data Protection 12.2 web interface (ideally a privileged/admin user, since the value is bypassing security restrictions) and who is induced to load attacker-controlled content (UI:R) while that session is active. It further depends on the absence or failure of anti-CSRF protections (tokens, SameSite cookies) on the targeted endpoints. The attacker themselves needs no credentials (PR:N), but cannot read responses - impact is limited to actions the victim's account is authorized to perform. These factors (required user interaction, dependence on an active privileged session, and same-origin read restriction) meaningfully limit real-world exploitation despite the network vector. |
| Impact | The vendor CVSS of 8.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) rates this as High, but the full C:H/I:H/A:H impact is questionable for a CSRF (CWE-352) flaw. CSRF is a blind, state-changing attack: it forces a victim's already-authenticated browser to submit forged requests, but the same-origin policy prevents the attacker from reading the response, so a claimed C:H (confidentiality) is overstated - the real impact is integrity-primary (unauthorized state/config changes on behalf of the victim). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC accompany this record, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The primary limiting factors are UI:R (a logged-in Guardium user, ideally an admin, must be lured into loading attacker content while their session is valid) and the niche footprint of the product. Net: a legitimate but conditional issue, not a drop-everything priority; realistic severity is closer to mid-6 than 8.8. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious web page or email containing an auto-submitting form or hidden request targeting a Guardium Data Protection administrative endpoint. When an authenticated Guardium administrator visits the page while their session is active, their browser silently submits the forged state-changing request (e.g., altering a policy or account setting), and the server processes it as legitimate. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis. |

Cross-site request forgery in IBM Guardium Data Protection 12.2 lets a remote attacker with no credentials (CVSS vector PR:N) induce a currently authenticated user's browser into sending forged requests that bypass security restrictions and perform privileged actions in that user's context. Exploitation is not automatic: it requires the victim to be logged into the Guardium web interface (ideally as an administrator) and to be lured into loading attacker-controlled content while that session is live (UI:R), so it is best modeled as an attacker-assisted integrity abuse of an existing session rather than a self-contained compromise. IBM has acknowledged the flaw (CWE-352) and shipped a vendor fix, but no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue does not appear on CISA KEV, so exploitation is not confirmed in the wild; successful attacks can alter configuration or security settings through the victim's own authorized privileges, but the attacker cannot read responses returned to that session.
RemediationAI
IBM has released a fix for this flaw; patch availability is confirmed by the vendor advisory at https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/7288035 (Patch available per vendor advisory) - because the input does not include an exact fixed build number, administrators should retrieve the current 12.2 fix level directly from that IBM support page rather than relying on an inferred version string. Where the update cannot be applied immediately, the highest-value compensating control is to eliminate the ambient-credential precondition: require administrators to close or log out of the Guardium console when not actively working in it, and shorten idle-session timeouts so a live privileged session is a smaller window (trade-off: more frequent re-authentication for operations staff). Marking Guardium session cookies SameSite=Strict and ensuring anti-CSRF tokens are enforced on state-changing endpoints blocks the attack at its source, but strict SameSite settings can break SSO redirects, embedded dashboards, or third-party integrations that rely on cross-site navigation, so they should be tested before broad rollout. Restrict the management interface so it is reachable only from a dedicated administrative VLAN or via a jump host/VPN, and block direct internet exposure of the console; this removes the attacker's delivery path for the lure page in most cases, at the cost of reduced remote-admin flexibility. Note that none of these workarounds patch the underlying missing-token defect, so upgrading remains the definitive fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is a classic cross-site request forgery (CWE-352) in the IBM Guardium Data Protection web management console, which performs state-changing administrative operations using browser-supplied session credentials. Because the console relies on ambient authentication (session cookies) rather than requiring a per-request, unguessable anti-CSRF token, a page hosted by an attacker can silently submit requests to Guardium endpoints that the victim's browser will automatically authenticate. The CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:ibm:guardium_data_protection:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms the affected component is the Guardium Data Protection application itself rather than an underlying library. Two properties constrain real-world impact and explain the divergence between the vendor and independent scoring: first, the same-origin policy prevents the attacker from reading any response to the forged request, so confidentiality is not directly exposed; second, the attacker can only cause actions the victim's own account is already authorized to take, so severity scales with the victim's privilege level (a CSRF against a read-only operator is far less consequential than one against an administrator). The vendor scored CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (8.8), whereas the independent assessment retains the required user interaction and no-privilege attacker profile but zeroes confidentiality (C:N) and availability (A:N), yielding C:N/I:H/A:N - a materially lower realistic severity for a pure CSRF primitive.

DescriptionCVE.org
IBM Guardium Data Protection 12.2 could allow a remote attacker to bypass security restrictions due to a cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability.
Executive ViewAI
IBM Guardium Data Protection 12.2 contains a high-severity cross-site request forgery flaw that allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to hijack an already-authenticated user's browser session and perform privileged configuration and security-setting changes under that user's authority. Because Guardium is commonly the monitoring, auditing, and compliance backbone for regulated data environments, unauthorized changes to its settings can undermine the integrity of audit evidence and security reporting rather than directly exposing data. Exposure is concentrated among administrators and security operations staff who keep an active Guardium web session open, making this a session-integrity risk to a small but highly privileged user population.
