MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Defense Evasion The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires that the album owner has already shared a filter-based 'smart album' (an album whose contents are defined by search filters) with the attacker; without such a share there is no access. The attacker must be an authenticated Nextcloud user (PR:L) and must modify their own photosSourceFolders search-folder configuration to widen the resolved file set. Limiting factors: the vulnerability only exposes the owner's file *metadata* (name, file ID, attributes) - not file content - and only within the scope reachable via the smart album's filter, and it cannot reach files of users who have not shared such an album with the attacker. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, tightly-scoped authorization flaw (CWE-284) in the Nextcloud Server Photos app. The provided CVSS 3.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N = 6.5) correctly captures a confidentiality-only, network-reachable, authenticated issue with no integrity or availability impact. The C:H rating is arguably aggressive: the flaw discloses only file metadata (names, file IDs, other attributes) - not file contents - so I lean toward C:L, which would lower the score to ~4.3. Exploitation is strongly gated: the attacker must be a user with whom the album owner has *already shared* a filter-based smart album; there is no path to arbitrary users' files. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC is present in the input, so exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. This is a legitimate privacy/authorization bug worth patching but is not a widespread-exploitation priority - the trust prerequisite (an existing share to the attacker) and metadata-only disclosure keep real-world risk low-to-moderate. Note the EUVD affected-version string 'Server 32.0.0 <32.0.0' is malformed/contradictory and should be verified against the vendor advisory. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A Nextcloud user is shared a filter-based smart album by another user. Because the smart album resolves its file listing using the *recipient's* photosSourceFolders search configuration rather than the owner's, the recipient configures their own search folders to enumerate the owner's files (names, IDs, metadata) in folders the owner never meant to expose. No public exploit code is identified; exploitation is manual and requires an existing share relationship. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026
Metadata disclosure in Nextcloud Server's Photos app smart albums allows an authenticated user to enumerate file names, IDs, and other metadata from a sharer's folders that were never intended to be included in the shared album. This moderate, tightly scoped authorization flaw (CWE-284) occurs because the smart album builds its file listing using the viewing user's photosSourceFolders search configuration instead of the album owner's configuration; an attacker who has been granted a filter-based smart album share can modify their own folder settings to widen the search scope. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the independent assessment limits impact to metadata (not file content) within the filter-reachable scope; it cannot reach files of users who have not shared such an album.
RemediationAI
Patch available per vendor advisory; the provided data does not specify an exact fixed version, so apply the latest Nextcloud Server update from the vendor and consult the original report at https://hackerone.com/reports/3506873 for patch guidance. Until the update can be deployed, reduce exposure by not sharing filter-based smart albums with users who should not see metadata from other folders, and as an administrator consider temporarily disabling or restricting the Photos app smart-album sharing capability-this removes legitimate dynamic album sharing, so weigh that functional loss against the metadata-disclosure risk. Additional compensating controls include limiting the ability to create or share smart albums to trusted groups, and monitoring Nextcloud audit logs for unusual smart-album access or repeated metadata enumeration by authenticated users; these reduce but do not eliminate the flaw because the underlying authorization check remains incorrect.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Nextcloud Server's Photos app includes filter-based 'smart albums' that dynamically resolve their contents by executing a search over the owner's files. When an album owner shares a smart album, the listing should be constrained by the owner's folder configuration (photosSourceFolders), but the code applies the viewer's photosSourceFolders setting instead. This is a CWE-284 (Improper Access Control) instance: the authorization decision for which files are included in the shared album is made using the wrong principal. An authenticated remote user (CVSS PR:L) can exploit this by altering their own search folder configuration to include paths that the owner has access to, causing the owner's files in those folders to appear in the shared album's results if they match the album's filter. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:nextcloud:server:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms Nextcloud Server as the affected product; the ENISA EUVD entry EUVD-2026-82622 lists 'Server 32.0.0 <32.0.0' (malformed range). Only metadata-file names, file IDs, and other attributes-is exposed; content is not accessible. The supplied CVSS 3.0 vector assigned C:H, but our independent assessment lowers confidentiality to C:L because the leak is metadata-only and bounded by the shared album's filter and the requirement that a share exist.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
The Photos app's filter-based "smart albums" build their file listing using the search configuration (photosSourceFolders) of the user viewing the album, rather than the album owner's configuration. When an album owner shares a smart album with another user, that user's own folder configuration is used to determine which of the owner's files are searched - allowing them to discover files (name, file ID, and other metadata) in folders the album owner never intended to include in the shared album.
This requires the album owner to have shared a filter-based smart album with the attacker; it does not allow access to arbitrary users' files without such a share.
