DescriptionCVE.org

ILIAS versions before 9.22, 10.0 through 10.9, and 11.0 through 11.2 contain an arbitrary file read vulnerability in the SOAP addFile method that allows authenticated users to read server files by supplying crafted XML with COPY-mode imports. Attackers can construct absolute file paths through an unsandboxed import directory and retrieve sensitive files including configuration files containing database credentials and setup passwords.

AnalysisAI

Arbitrary file read in ILIAS's SOAP addFile method permits any authenticated low-privilege user to retrieve server-side files by supplying crafted XML with COPY-mode import entries that contain absolute attacker-controlled paths. The flaw spans three major release lines - all versions before 9.22, 10.0 through 10.9, and 11.0 through 11.2 - and is particularly damaging because the targetable files include ILIAS configuration files storing database credentials and setup passwords, enabling lateral movement to backend systems. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires a valid ILIAS user account at any privilege level (PR:L per CVSS vector) - unauthenticated exploitation is not possible. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) characterizes a network-accessible, low-complexity attack requiring only a low-privilege authenticated session, yielding high confidentiality impact with no integrity or availability consequences. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Apply the vendor-released patch available via GitHub commit e9acd3f8d498279f6c26a145ca32ce85152496a4 (https://github.com/ILIAS-eLearning/ILIAS/commit/e9acd3f8d498279f6c26a145ca32ce85152496a4); the exact patched release version numbers are not independently confirmed in available data beyond the CVE description's 'before 9.22 / 10.10+ / 11.3+' language, so administrators should upgrade to the next tagged release in each supported branch once published by ILIAS e.V. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all ILIAS deployments and identify instances running versions prior to 9.22, any version 10.0-10.9, or any version 11.0-11.2. …
