4DescriptionCVE.org
In MongoDB, insufficient validation of shard key values during document insertion allowed authenticated users to store documents with specially crafted, operator-shaped objects as shard key values in sharded collections. When change stream events for such documents were processed with the updateLookup full document mode, the crafted values were embedded into internal post-image lookup queries without proper sanitization, causing them to be interpreted as query operators rather than literal equality values. This could result in change stream consumers receiving incorrect post-image documents or encountering non-resumable fatal errors.
AnalysisAI
Change stream data corruption in MongoDB Server (versions 7.0.0-7.0.40, 8.0.0-8.0.29, and 8.3.0-8.3.8) enables authenticated database users to insert documents with operator-shaped objects as shard key values that bypass insertion validation in sharded collections. When downstream change stream consumers operate in updateLookup full document mode, these stored values are embedded unsanitized into internal post-image lookup queries, causing MongoDB's query engine to interpret them as operator expressions rather than literal equality predicates. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires three concurrent conditions: (1) the attacker must hold a valid MongoDB user credential with at minimum insert privileges on a sharded collection (PR:L - unauthenticated exploitation is not possible); (2) the MongoDB deployment must use sharding - a non-default topology requiring deliberate infrastructure provisioning, typically found in large-scale or horizontally-partitioned production environments; and (3) at least one application-layer change stream consumer must be configured with the updateLookup full document lookup option on the affected collection - this is an explicit application-level API configuration choice, not enabled by default. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 base score of 2.3 accurately reflects a limited-impact, precondition-gated vulnerability. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade MongoDB Server to the vendor-released patched versions: 7.0.41 for the 7.0.x release train, 8.0.30 for the 8.0.x release train, or 8.3.9 for the 8.3.x release train, as applicable to the deployed environment. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
