1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation is NOT possible against a default install. It requires that an administrator has previously granted the plugin's export capability to a role that does NOT also hold the plugin's import capability; the export-capable user is then handed the installation-wide secret, which the vulnerable AJAX import actions accept in lieu of any capability check. Limiting factors: the attacker must already be an authenticated user (PR present in the CVSS vector), the specific delegated-role configuration is non-default and must be present, and the target site must run a version before 7.111. No user interaction is needed once those conditions hold (UI:N).

Impact

This is a real but tightly-gated privilege-escalation flaw. All signals are consistent that impact is severe (full administrator takeover via arbitrary site-archive import → C:H/I:H/A:H), and a public POC from WPScan plus a vendor patch (7.111) confirm the issue is real and reproducible. However, the effective risk is materially lower than the 7.2 CVSS suggests because the description explicitly states exploitation is NOT possible in a default configuration: an administrator must first have granted the plugin's export capability to a role that lacks the plugin's import capability. That non-default prerequisite is a condition beyond the attacker's control, so the vendor's AC:L is arguably understated (AC:H is more accurate). Conversely, the vendor's PR:H is arguably overstated - the attacker is a non-admin user holding only the export capability, closer to PR:L. No EPSS score and no CISA KEV listing are present in the input, and there is no evidence of active exploitation - the public exploit code is a distinct signal from in-the-wild use. Net: prioritize patching for sites that use delegated/custom roles, but this is not a mass-exploitation, default-config internet-wide threat.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a site where an administrator has delegated the plugin's export capability to a lower-privileged custom role (e.g., a site-manager or backup-operator role) without also granting import rights, that user reads the installation-wide secret the plugin discloses to export-capable users, then replays it to the uncapability-checked import AJAX action to upload and restore an attacker-crafted site archive, seizing administrator access. A public POC exists (WPScan), and the attack is remote and requires no user interaction, but it only works against this specific non-default role configuration.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

Privilege escalation in the All-in-One WP Migration and Backup WordPress plugin before 7.111 allows an authenticated user who has been granted the plugin's export capability - but not its import capability - to obtain an installation-wide secret and replay it against the plugin's import AJAX actions, importing an arbitrary site archive and gaining administrator access. Exploitation is not possible against a default install: it requires a non-default configuration in which an administrator has delegated the plugin's export capability to a role that does not also hold import capability, and the target site must run a version older than 7.111. Publicly available exploit code exists (reported via WPScan), making the flaw attractive to attackers who already hold a low-privileged account on a misconfigured site; the independent assessment rates it CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (high impact, but with a hard configuration prerequisite).

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade the All-in-One WP Migration and Backup plugin to version 7.111 or later, which enforces proper capability checks on the affected AJAX actions; this is the only complete fix. As an immediate compensating measure for sites that cannot patch, audit every role and user on the WordPress installation and revoke the plugin's export capability from any role that does not also hold the import capability - this removes the attacker's path to the installation-wide secret, at the cost of breaking legitimate delegated export workflows (move export rights to administrators only). Because any user who previously held export already knows the secret, treat it as compromised: deactivating and reactivating the plugin, or resetting the plugin's settings, forces a fresh secret, though this may interrupt or invalidate in-progress migration/export jobs and any saved migration files. If the export delegation cannot be unwound and the site cannot be patched promptly, temporarily deactivating the plugin removes the exposed AJAX endpoints entirely, with the trade-off that backup and migration functionality is lost until it is re-enabled post-upgrade. After applying either the patch or the role change, review administrator accounts and recent plugin import activity for signs of an unauthorized site archive being imported, and rotate administrator credentials and salts if any suspicious import is found. Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management) in the WordPress plugin All-in-One WP Migration and Backup. WordPress authorization is built on roles and capabilities checked through functions such as current_user_can(); the plugin, however, gates several of its AJAX import actions on an installation-wide secret rather than on any capability check. Because that same secret is disclosed to every user permitted to export the site, it ceases to function as an authorization boundary - any export-capable principal, including one on a custom role that deliberately lacks the plugin's import capability, can supply the secret and reach the privileged import routines. This is why the flaw is not exploitable against a default installation: out of the box the export and import capabilities are not split across different roles, so no lower-privileged principal normally receives the secret. The independent assessment models this configuration dependency as AC:H while confirming PR:L (an authenticated user is required) and UI:N (no further interaction is needed once the delegated role exists). The published CPE entry, cpe:2.3:a:unknown:all-in-one_wp_migration_and_backup:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, reflects that the upstream vendor mapping was not yet populated in the CPE dictionary at the time of analysis.

DescriptionCVE.org

The All-in-One WP Migration and Backup WordPress plugin before 7.111 does not perform any capability check on several of its AJAX actions, gating them only on an installation-wide secret which it discloses to any user permitted to export the site, allowing such a user to import an arbitrary site archive and gain administrator access. Exploitation requires an administrator to have granted the export capability to a role that does not hold the All-in-One WP Migration and Backup WordPress plugin before 7.111's own import capability, which is not a default configuration.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A privilege-escalation flaw in the All-in-One WP Migration and Backup WordPress plugin (versions before 7.111) can let a low-privileged user turn a delegated export permission into full administrator control of the website, enabling complete site takeover, data theft, or defacement. Risk is concentrated on sites where administrators have granted the plugin's export capability to a role that does not also hold import rights - a non-default delegation pattern - while the publicly available exploit code lowers the skill barrier for anyone who already holds an account on such a site. Leadership should care because a compromised WordPress install can expose customer data, corrupt backups, and serve as a foothold for lateral movement into other corporate systems.
