Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal') (CWE-22) in the Kibana Fleet feature can lead to the unauthorized deletion of privileged resources via Path Traversal (CAPEC-126). A low-privileged user holding Fleet Settings write access could cause a subsequent administrative action to act on unintended internal resources, resulting in the deletion of privileged resources such as user accounts and other organizational assets. Exploitation requires an administrator to interact with the affected Fleet interface.
AnalysisAI
Path traversal in Kibana's Fleet feature enables a low-privileged attacker with Fleet Settings write access to plant a malicious pathname in settings that, when subsequently acted upon by an administrator, causes deletion of privileged internal resources including user accounts and organizational assets. All Kibana versions prior to 8.19.18, 9.3.6, and 9.4.3 are affected per ESA-2026-158. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires two specific conditions to be simultaneously true. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 7.3 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H) captures the risk profile accurately: network-accessible, low attacker privilege required, but dependent on administrative interaction. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade Kibana to version 8.19.18 (8.x deployments), 9.3.6, or 9.4.3 (9.x deployments) as specified in ESA-2026-158 at https://discuss.elastic.co/t/kibana-8-19-18-9-3-6-9-4-3-security-update-esa-2026-158/390113. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, audit and restrict Fleet Settings write access to only named trusted administrators; any user with this permission should be reviewed for operational necessity. …
