Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a valid authenticated Wallos user account; administrative privileges are not needed and no special role or permission beyond basic login is required. The SSRF connection is triggered asynchronously by the notification cron job (sendnotifications.php), not immediately on saving the SMTP setting - the attacker must have at least one subscription with an upcoming notification event to trigger the connection, or wait for the cron schedule to fire. Wallos instances with open user registration (a configurable admin setting) are particularly at risk because any external actor can self-register and immediately exploit this. The internal hosts probed must be network-reachable from the Wallos server itself, so the impact depends on the server's network placement. Exploitation is limited to outbound TCP connection initiation (SSRF) and does not provide direct read access to Wallos application data.

Impact

The CVSS 4.3 Medium score reflects a network-reachable, low-complexity path that requires only a standard user account. The SSRF is blind or semi-blind - the attacker receives no direct HTTP response, but the TCP connection itself reveals whether an internal host and port are reachable, enabling internal network enumeration and potential interaction with SMTP-speaking services (e.g., internal mail relays, Redis, Memcached if they respond to SMTP-like banners). Instances with open registration face a broader threat surface since any self-registered account can exploit this. No EPSS probability was provided in the input and cannot be quantified; there is no CISA KEV listing and no known public POC, suggesting this has not seen widespread opportunistic exploitation. The practical severity is most acute in deployments where the Wallos container shares a network segment with sensitive internal services - organizations should evaluate their network topology before deprioritizing based on the medium CVSS alone.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with any valid Wallos account (including self-registered if registrations are open) navigates to personal notification settings, sets the SMTP host field to an internal IP such as 10.0.0.5 and port 6379 (Redis), and saves the configuration. When the next notification cron execution fires for any of that user's subscriptions, the Wallos server initiates a TCP connection to 10.0.0.5:6379 - allowing the attacker to confirm the service is reachable and potentially exchange protocol banners. No public POC has been identified, but the exploit path is straightforward given the direct code flow documented in the advisory.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 31, 2026

Server-side request forgery in Wallos (versions 2.0.0 through 4.x) lets any authenticated user force the application server to open arbitrary outbound TCP connections to attacker-chosen hosts, including internal and link-local addresses. The per-user SMTP notification settings endpoint stores a user-supplied host without validation, and the notification cron job passes it directly to PHPMailer - no admin rights are required to abuse this path. No public exploit or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis; the vendor patched this in version 5.0.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Wallos to version 5.0.0, which is the vendor-released patch per the GitHub release tag and security advisory GHSA-c75x-9vj6-57qj. The fix introduces SSRF validation in ssrf_helper.php and an admin-configurable allowlist (local_webhook_notifications_allowlist) for permitted outbound SMTP/webhook destinations. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply a network-layer egress firewall rule restricting the Wallos server's outbound TCP to known legitimate SMTP endpoints only - this prevents internal host probing but does not remediate the vulnerability itself. A secondary compensating control is to disable user-level email notifications at the admin settings level, removing the attack trigger entirely at the cost of losing per-user notification functionality.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Wallos is a self-hosted PHP/SQLite personal subscription tracker (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:ellite:wallos:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*). The flaw is CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery): the endpoint endpoints/notifications/saveemailnotifications.php persists the user-supplied SMTP host value without any SSRF filtering, and the cron job endpoints/cronjobs/sendnotifications.php later assigns it directly to PHPMailer via $mail->Host = $email['smtpAddress']. When the cron fires for a subscription notification, PHPMailer initiates a TCP connection to whatever host the attacker specified. The fix in v5.0.0 introduces a dedicated ssrf_helper.php validation layer and an admin-configurable local_webhook_notifications_allowlist setting, as evidenced by the commit diff at 11eaf402e841a628c68a805694227ce66c45f6f3.

DescriptionCVE.org

Wallos is an open-source, self-hostable personal subscription tracker. From version 2.0.0 to before version 5.0.0, any authenticated Wallos user (no admin rights required) can make the server open arbitrary outbound SMTP connections to internal/link-local addresses, by setting the SMTP host of their personal email notifications to an internal IP. The per-user notification settings endpoint (endpoints/notifications/saveemailnotifications.php) performs no SSRF validation, and the notification cron (endpoints/cronjobs/sendnotifications.php) feeds that user-controlled host straight into PHPMailer ($mail->Host = $email['smtpAddress']). When the user's subscription notification fires, the server connects to the chosen host:port. This issue has been patched in version 5.0.0.
