Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated Splunk account assigned a role that holds the specific list_spl2_modules capability, and the attacker must reach the SPL2-module-filtering REST API endpoint over the network. The core prerequisite is the SPL2 module management feature being in use with multiple users owning private module definitions - in a single-user or no-SPL2-module deployment there is little to disclose. Limiting factors: the required list_spl2_modules capability (not granted to default unprivileged users), the confidentiality-only impact (no write/integrity or availability effect), and the fixed ceiling of versions below 10.4.3 (10.2.x, 10.0.x, and 9.4.x are explicitly not affected). Impact is bounded to data exposed through the affected REST API, specifically other users' private SPL2 module definitions.

Impact

This is a moderate, authenticated information-disclosure flaw rather than a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, base 6.5) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable REST API, low attack complexity, but requiring a pre-existing authenticated role that holds the list_spl2_modules capability (PR:L), and the impact is confined to confidentiality (C:H, I:N, A:N) - reading private SPL2 module definitions belonging to other users via SQL injection in module filtering (CWE-89). No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified; status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The main signal tempering risk is the privilege requirement - this is not an unauthenticated internet-facing bug but a privilege-boundary/tenant-isolation break usable by an existing low-privileged (but SPL2-capable) user or an attacker who has already compromised such an account. A patch is confirmed available from the vendor. Net: a real priority for multi-tenant/shared Splunk deployments where SPL2 module confidentiality matters, but lower urgency than an unauthenticated RCE. Note the description states Splunk Cloud Platform is also affected, whereas the provided CPE lists only splunk_enterprise - verify Cloud exposure separately.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who already holds (or has phished/compromised) a Splunk role carrying the list_spl2_modules capability sends crafted input to the SPL2 module filtering REST API endpoint. Because user-supplied values are not parameterized before use in the backend database query, the attacker injects SQL that bypasses per-user permission filtering and returns private SPL2 module definitions owned by other users. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the attack is remote but authenticated (PR:L).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026

SQL injection in the SPL2 module filtering feature of Splunk Enterprise (10.4.x below 10.4.3) lets an authenticated user who holds a role with the list_spl2_modules capability read data exposed by the affected REST API, including private SPL2 module definitions owned by other users. The flaw is rooted in unparameterized user input being passed into database queries that back SPL2 module filtering, so a crafted filter value escapes the caller's intended module visibility scope; the impact is confidentiality-only with no write or availability effect, and the CVSS 3.1 vector (6.5, AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) confirms the network-reachable but authenticated and low-privilege nature of the attack. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no CISA KEV listing, but a vendor patch is available in Splunk Enterprise 10.4.3, and Splunk Enterprise 10.2.x, 10.0.x, and 9.4.x are explicitly not affected.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to upgrade Splunk Enterprise to 10.4.3 or later, which is the vendor-released patched version carrying the parameterization fix for SPL2 module filtering; Splunk Cloud Platform customers are remediated automatically by the vendor. Full upgrade and mitigation guidance is in the Splunk advisory SVD-2026-1001 (https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-1001). Because the flaw requires the list_spl2_modules capability, a strong compensating control is least-privilege capability review: audit all roles for list_spl2_modules and remove it from any role that does not genuinely need SPL2 module visibility, noting the side effect that affected users will lose the ability to list or filter SPL2 modules until the upgrade completes. Additional interim measures include restricting network access to the SPL2 module management REST API endpoints to trusted administrative networks or hosts rather than exposing them broadly, with the trade-off that legitimate remote and automation clients must be re-homed or routed through a proxy (for example a VPN or a jump host) and that on-premises or cloud-managed workflows touching those endpoints may break if the restriction is too tight. Where SPL2 modules are not in active use or private module definitions are not stored, the practical exposure is minimal and the upgrade can be scheduled on a normal maintenance cadence; in multi-tenant or many-user search environments that rely on per-user private modules, prioritize the 10.4.3 upgrade. Because only read access to REST API-exposed data is at stake, no emergency containment beyond the capability review and API reachability restriction is warranted, and there is no need to disable SPL2 module functionality entirely unless the environment cannot be patched promptly. Monitor search and REST API audit logs for anomalous SPL2 module filtering requests containing SQL metacharacters as a detection backstop while remediation is in progress.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is a classic CWE-89 SQL injection occurring in the SPL2 module management subsystem of Splunk Enterprise. SPL2 modules are reusable, named search definitions that can be shared or kept private to individual users; the platform exposes a REST API for listing and filtering those modules, and the filtering operation builds database queries from caller-supplied values without parameterization or proper escaping. Because the query text is not bound, an attacker who can reach the module-filtering endpoint can inject SQL syntax that broadens the result set beyond the rows the caller's permissions should return, disclosing private module definitions belonging to other users. The controlling access control is the list_spl2_modules capability: CVSS PR:L (and the assessed vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) confirms that a valid authenticated account with a role carrying that capability is required, and the capability is not granted to default unprivileged users. The CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:splunk:splunk_enterprise:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects the broad wildcard scope of the Splunk Enterprise product line, while the version boundaries narrow the practical exposure to the 10.4 branch below 10.4.3; the description attributes the same missing-parameterization root cause to Splunk Cloud Platform, which is patched through the vendor's managed service rather than by customer upgrade. The practical severity ceiling is set by the fact that only read access to data reachable through the affected REST API is at risk - no integrity or availability impact is present - and environments with a single user or no SPL2 module usage have effectively nothing to disclose.

DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.3, a user that holds a role with the list_spl2_modules capability could use SQL injection in SPL2 module filtering to access all relevant data available through the affected Representational State Transfer (REST) API, including private SPL2 module definitions belonging to other users. The vulnerability is possible because Splunk Enterprise and Splunk Cloud Platform do not parameterize user-supplied values before using them in database queries for SPL2 module filtering. For more information see Manage SPL2 modules (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/search/spl2-search-manual/multiple-searches-in-an-spl2-module/manage-spl2-modules) and Module permissions (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/search/spl2-search-manual/modules-statements-and-views/module-permissions) in the Splunk documentation.

Splunk Enterprise versions 10.2.x, 10.0.x, and 9.4.x are not affected.
