Exploitation Conditions

Three conditions must all be true for exploitation: (1) the stigmem-plugin-multi-tenant plugin must be installed and active - the flaw is entirely absent on single-tenant default deployments, which represent the majority of installations; (2) the attacker must hold a valid authenticated credential for at least one tenant on the node (PR:L per CVSS vector); (3) the attacker must have network access to the /v1/tombstones endpoint and the fact query or provenance read paths. Exploitation is bounded by these factors: the opt-in multi-tenant plugin requirement eliminates default deployments as a target, a valid tenant credential is a hard prerequisite, and the impact is scoped to integrity of RTBF tombstone state rather than direct arbitrary data exfiltration.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:H/VA:L, score 7.2) accurately reflects the key characteristics: network-reachable via API, low complexity once the attack surface is understood, requiring only a valid tenant credential (PR:L), with high integrity impact because RTBF deletion records are actively corrupted and cross-tenant suppression undermines data isolation guarantees. The VC:L and VA:L acknowledge limited confidentiality and availability side-effects (facts from other tenants may become visible or be improperly suppressed). No EPSS data, CISA KEV listing, or POC availability was provided in the intelligence inputs, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified - the assessment that no public exploit exists is based on absence of KEV and POC references, not a confirmed negative. Critically, the attack surface is narrowed to only multi-tenant deployments using the explicitly opt-in stigmem-plugin-multi-tenant; default single-tenant nodes are architecturally immune. For organizations with GDPR, CCPA, or similar regulatory RTBF obligations, this flaw directly undermines legally-mandated deletion guarantees and should be treated as an urgent remediation priority despite the absence of known active exploitation. For single-tenant operators, risk is zero.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a valid credential for one tenant in a multi-tenant stigmem deployment submits an RTBF tombstone request via POST /v1/tombstones. The missing tenant resolution causes the tombstone to be written under 'default' rather than the caller's tenant, and on subsequent fact queries and provenance reads the tenant-blind suppression filter either hides facts belonging to other tenants from the attacker's queries or fails to suppress the attacker's deleted facts from other tenants' views. No public exploit code has been identified, but the vulnerability is mechanically straightforward to trigger for any authenticated tenant given knowledge of the API endpoint.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 19, 2026

Cross-tenant broken object level authorization in stigmem-node before 0.9.0a12 allows an authenticated tenant in a multi-tenant deployment to corrupt RTBF tombstone records and trigger tenant-blind fact suppression. The root cause is twofold: the issue_tombstone function hardcoded the tenant to 'default' instead of reading it from the caller's identity, and the tombstone read-suppression path lacked a tenant_id predicate, causing deletion records to be misattributed and tombstone filtering to operate across all tenants indiscriminately. The impact is limited to deployments running the opt-in stigmem-plugin-multi-tenant; a vendor-released patch exists at 0.9.0a12, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade stigmem-node to version 0.9.0a12 or later. PR #728 (https://github.com/eidetic-labs/stigmem/pull/728) delivers four specific fixes: identity.tenant_id is now passed from issue_tombstone into create_tombstone, eliminating the hardcoded 'default' fallback; AND tenant_id = ? predicates were added to _get_tombstone_filter and get_tombstone_status; the _tombstone_scope_cache is re-keyed to include tenant; and all four read call sites thread the caller's tenant through the suppression path. The vendor advisory (https://github.com/eidetic-labs/stigmem/security/advisories/GHSA-x26h-xmv8-gxf7) confirms no workarounds are available short of patching. Organizations unable to upgrade immediately should consider restricting network access to the /v1/tombstones endpoint and fact query paths to trusted internal networks only, accepting that RTBF isolation will remain broken until the patch is applied - this trade-off is significant for any deployment with regulatory deletion obligations.

Technical ContextAI · show details

stigmem-node (pip package, cpe:2.3:a:eidetic-labs:stigmem) is a semantic memory node library implementing RTBF via tombstone records - markers that suppress references to deleted facts from subsequent API queries and provenance reads. The vulnerability is CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key): the issue_tombstone function in the multi-tenant plugin resolved the tenant by hardcoding the string 'default' rather than extracting it from the authenticated caller's identity, and the suppression functions _get_tombstone_filter (routes/facts/common.py) and _tombstone_scope_cache (lifecycle/tombstones.py) evaluated tombstone applicability without a tenant_id = ? SQL predicate. Because tombstone checks gate all fact queries and provenance reads, the missing predicate caused the suppression logic to be applied tenant-blind across the entire node. The vulnerable surface is the /v1/tombstones endpoint and any fact query or provenance read path on a multi-tenant node.

DescriptionCVE.org

stigmem-node before 0.9.0a12 contains a cross-tenant broken object level authorization (BOLA) flaw in the RTBF (right-to-be-forgotten) tombstone mechanism. issue_tombstone defaulted the tenant to "default" instead of the caller's tenant, allowing deletion records to be written to the wrong tenant, and the read-suppression path (_get_tombstone_filter and the tombstone scope cache) lacked a tenant_id predicate, so tombstone suppression was applied tenant-blind across fact queries and provenance reads. As a result, a tenant's deletion could be attributed to the wrong tenant and tombstone suppression could either hide facts belonging to other tenants or fail to hide facts within the correct tenant, undermining data isolation and RTBF guarantees. The issue is exploitable only on multi-tenant deployments running the opt-in stigmem-plugin-multi-tenant; single-tenant deployments are unaffected. Fixed in 0.9.0a12.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Multi-tenant deployments of stigmem-node before version 0.9.0a12 contain a broken object-level authorization vulnerability (CVSS 7.2) that allows authenticated users to corrupt Right-to-Be-Forgotten (RTBF) tombstone records across tenant boundaries, compromising data privacy controls and risking GDPR compliance violations. This vulnerability affects only organizations using the stigmem-plugin-multi-tenant module, where attackers can manipulate deletion records and suppress facts unintentionally across tenants, creating compliance and audit trail exposure. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, but remediation is urgent given privacy and regulatory implications.
