Kirby is an open-source content management system. Prior to 4.9.5 and 5.5.2, depending on the release line, Kirby's media handler in src/Cms/Media.php allowed Kirby\Cms\Media::thumb() to append a path-bearing filename to a validated parent media directory. On nginx, PHP's built-in server, or Apache with AllowEncodedSlashes enabled, a remote attacker could submit encoded slash characters such as %2f in the filename and traverse outside the parent's media directory. Differences between responses for existing and nonexistent thumbnail configurations disclosed whether an arbitrary .json file existed, and a .json file containing a valid filename key could cause the referenced image to be returned and the job file to be deleted. The related file::version path in src/Filesystem/Asset.php also accepted ../ sequences outside the intended index root. This issue is fixed in versions 4.9.5 and 5.5.2.

AnalysisAI
Path traversal in Kirby CMS's media handler exposes arbitrary .json file existence and potentially image file contents to remote unauthenticated attackers on affected server configurations. The vulnerability exists in two code paths - Media::thumb() in src/Cms/Media.php and the file::version path in src/Filesystem/Asset.php - both of which failed to reject URL-encoded slash characters or literal ../ sequences before resolving paths relative to validated media directories. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires the Kirby instance to run on nginx (which decodes %2f by default and cannot be configured to preserve it without breaking routing), PHP's built-in web server, or Apache with AllowEncodedSlashes explicitly set to On or NoDecode - a non-default Apache directive. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.2 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N) accurately captures the tension here: exploitation is straightforward once the precondition is met (AT:P), but that precondition - a specific web server configuration - is non-trivial. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade to Kirby 4.9.5 (4.x line) or 5.5.2 (5.x line) as appropriate; release notes and binaries are at https://github.com/getkirby/kirby/releases/tag/4.9.5 and https://github.com/getkirby/kirby/releases/tag/5.5.2, with fixes across commits 22fbaedb7e6d, a40808f5c2ee, cd7abb68d298, and e0dca5f709ad. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
