Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a local user account on the target system - no network access is needed. The attacker must be able to open an AF_ALG socket of type SOCK_SEQPACKET with ALG_TYPE_SKCIPHER; on most Linux distributions, this is accessible to unprivileged users with user namespace support enabled (the default on Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch). The vulnerable code path is reachable only through the AIO branch of skcipher_recvmsg(), meaning the target application or the attacker's own process must invoke io_submit() on an AF_ALG file descriptor rather than the synchronous recvmsg() path. The race is exploitable specifically against symmetric ciphers with statesize == 0, which includes CBC and CTR mode - these are the modes where IV chaining via req->iv writeback is used. Successful exploitation requires timing two concurrent socket operations (AIO io_submit and sendmsg ALG_SET_IV) within the same race window, which makes it probabilistic rather than deterministic - the CVE description documents a 2296/200000 success rate on 6.6.y before the fix. Exploitation is not possible against ciphers that maintain internal state (statesize != 0) or against synchronous recvmsg() callers. The race is not remotely triggerable and cannot be exploited from a network context.

Impact

The NVD-assigned CVSS of 7.1 with AV:L/AC:L/PR:L captures the local privilege requirement but AC:L arguably understates the attack complexity - this is a timing-sensitive race condition between concurrent socket operations, which in practice makes reliable exploitation harder than a deterministic flaw. An independent assessment of AC:H is more accurate. EPSS of 0.19% at the 9th percentile confirms low automated exploitation probability, consistent with the local-only vector and race-timing dependency. The vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog and no public exploit code exists. Despite the low EPSS, the C:H/I:H impact is concrete and well-demonstrated: the CVE description documents that attacker IV injection dropped from 2296/200000 to 0/200000 after the fix on 6.6.y, confirming the attack is reproducible even if not trivially reliable. In practice, the real-world attack surface is narrow - AF_ALG AIO is rarely used by production userspace crypto libraries - meaning even a mid-sized municipal IT team in gdynia running standard glibc/OpenSSL stacks is unlikely to be exposed unless running custom kernel crypto offloading code. The combination of low EPSS, local-only access, and narrow AF_ALG AIO usage makes this a moderate operational priority, but the high cryptographic impact justifies patching at the next scheduled kernel maintenance window.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local unprivileged user opens an AF_ALG SOCK_SEQPACKET socket configured for CTR mode and submits an AIO decryption request via io_submit(), which releases the socket lock while the request is in-flight and referencing the shared ctx->iv buffer. Concurrently, a second thread from the same process issues sendmsg(ALG_SET_IV) to overwrite the shared IV, causing the in-flight cipher operation to execute under the injected IV. By choosing the injected IV to match a known previous IV, the attacker induces keystream reuse and can XOR the ciphertext outputs to recover the plaintext of the victim's concurrent operation. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 17, 2026

IV race condition in the Linux kernel's AF_ALG skcipher interface allows local unprivileged users to inject attacker-controlled initialization vectors into in-flight AIO cryptographic operations. For CTR and CBC modes, IV reuse enables keystream derivation and plaintext recovery of concurrent cipher operations sharing the same AF_ALG socket. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; patches are confirmed available across all major stable kernel branches (5.10.261, 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 7.1.5, 7.2-rc1).

RemediationAI

Upgrade to a patched kernel version for your running stable branch: 5.10.261, 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 7.1.5, or 7.2-rc1. Distribution-provided kernel updates (Ubuntu USN, Red Hat RHSA, SUSE SUSE-SU, Debian DSA) should be consulted as they may backport these fixes to distribution-specific kernel versions not enumerated here. Patch commits are available at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/bf09b0be8e851f050e98da702d247c14d81b591a and related stable refs. If immediate kernel upgrade is not possible, restrict unprivileged access to AF_ALG sockets: setting kernel.unprivileged_userns_clone=0 (available on Debian/Ubuntu derivatives) prevents unprivileged users from creating user namespaces required to reach the AF_ALG interface without CAP_NET_ADMIN, effectively blocking the attack path - note this may break rootless container runtimes (Podman, LXC) that depend on user namespaces. Alternatively, applying seccomp profiles or LSM (AppArmor/SELinux) rules to deny io_submit() and socket(AF_ALG, ...) syscalls for untrusted processes blocks the vulnerable code path without affecting the broader kernel. These workarounds may disrupt applications using the kernel crypto AF_ALG backend (e.g., OpenSSL with the afalg engine).

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in crypto/algif_skcipher.c, which implements the AF_ALG kernel socket interface allowing userspace processes to access kernel cryptographic primitives. The bug is in skcipher_recvmsg(): the socket-wide ctx->iv pointer is passed directly into the skcipher request object before io_submit() releases the socket lock, leaving the in-flight AIO request referencing a shared, unlocked IV buffer. A concurrent sendmsg(ALG_SET_IV) call can then overwrite this buffer mid-operation. For ciphers with statesize == 0 - which includes CBC and CTR as enumerated in the description - MSG_MORE inter-chunk IV chaining relies entirely on in-place req->iv writeback, so any snapshot-based mitigation also fails because the per-request memory is released by af_alg_free_resources() on completion. The fix forces synchronous execution, eliminating both the IV race and the writeback race. CPE string cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers the full kernel tree. No CWE is formally assigned, but the root cause is a classic TOCTOU race condition (CWE-362) in the async crypto socket path.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

crypto: algif_skcipher - force synchronous processing on trees without ctx->state

The AIO/async path in skcipher_recvmsg() passes the socket-wide ctx->iv directly into the skcipher request. After io_submit() the socket lock is dropped and the request is processed asynchronously, so a concurrent sendmsg(ALG_SET_IV) can overwrite ctx->iv and make the in-flight request run under an attacker-controlled IV. For CTR/stream modes this is IV/keystream reuse and lets an unprivileged user recover the plaintext of a concurrent operation.

Snapshotting ctx->iv into per-request storage for the async path is not sufficient. For ciphers with statesize == 0 - which includes cbc and ctr - the MSG_MORE inter-chunk IV chaining is carried solely by the in-place req->iv writeback, which a snapshot redirects into per-request memory that af_alg_free_resources() releases on completion, silently producing wrong output. Writing the IV back from the completion callback instead is not possible either: that would require lock_sock() there, but the callback can run in softirq/atomic context, so it must not sleep.

Make the operation synchronous instead, which removes both the IV race and any writeback race. This is equivalent to the upstream resolution, commit fcc77d33a34c ("net: Remove support for AIO on sockets"), which removed the AIO socket path across net/ entirely and so produces the same end state for this file. This patch deviates from that commit deliberately: rather than removing AIO socket support tree-wide, which would be far too invasive for stable, it removes only the AIO branch in crypto/algif_skcipher.c. io_submit() now completes synchronously; AF_ALG async is rarely used in practice.

The -EIOCBQUEUED check in skcipher_recvmsg() is now dead but harmless, and is left alone to keep the fix minimal.

Tested on 6.6.y: attacker IV injection dropped from 2296/200000 to 0/200000 after the change; MSG_MORE chunked CTR output bit-identical to single-shot.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A race condition in Linux kernel cryptographic operations (AF_ALG skcipher interface) enables local attackers to inject malicious initialization vectors and recover plaintext from encrypted data in concurrent operations. This directly undermines encryption integrity on affected systems. Organizations running vulnerable kernels must patch immediately to preserve data confidentiality.
