phpList before 3.7.0-RC5 contains a cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in lists/admin/admins.php. The administrator deletion action is triggered via an unauthenticated GET request (?page=admins&delete=N) that is not protected by a CSRF token (the central verifyCsrfGetToken check uses enforce=false and is bypassed when the token parameter is absent). A remote attacker can trick a logged-in super-administrator into loading a crafted URL (e.g., embedded as an image in an email) to delete any non-self administrator account.
AnalysisAI
Administrator account deletion in phpList before 3.7.0-RC5 is exploitable via CSRF, allowing a remote attacker to permanently remove any non-self administrator account by tricking a logged-in super-administrator into loading a single crafted GET URL. The root cause is that the deletion endpoint in admins.php bypasses CSRF token validation when the token parameter is absent and the central verifyCsrfGetToken check is called with enforce=false, making the action trivially triggerable via an embedded image in an HTML email. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Three specific conditions must hold simultaneously: (1) The victim must be a super-administrator - not a standard administrator - with an active authenticated phpList session open in the same browser at the time the crafted URL is loaded; only super-administrators are authorized to perform admin deletion in phpList, so lower-privilege session compromise does not suffice. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 base score of 7.2 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:H/VA:H) reflects a network-exploitable flaw with no complexity or privilege prerequisites for the attacker, tempered by a passive user-interaction requirement - the super-administrator must load or render the crafted URL. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker identifies a publicly accessible phpList installation and enumerates or guesses a target administrator's numeric account ID. The attacker embeds a crafted image tag - such as an img element pointing to https://target.example.com/lists/admin/?page=admins&delete=3 - in an HTML email sent to a known super-administrator. … |
| Remediation | Upgrade phpList to version 3.7.0-RC5 or later; the release is available at https://github.com/phpList/phplist3/releases/tag/v3.7.0-RC5 and the underlying fix is implemented in commit 5159c3ed33a5674a8169472b50d146d97f630746 (https://github.com/phpList/phplist3/commit/5159c3ed33a5674a8169472b50d146d97f630746). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
