Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires: (1) the Syncope SRA component must be deployed and configured to use Apereo CAS authentication - instances using SAML, OIDC, or other auth mechanisms are not affected; (2) an attacker must be able to control or influence the forwarded HTTP headers reaching the SRA endpoint, either via a MITM position on the network, a misconfigured upstream proxy/load balancer that passes client-supplied Forwarded/X-Forwarded-Host headers unmodified, or by delivering a crafted URL to a victim; (3) user interaction is required - the victim must follow the redirect and interact with the attacker-controlled page. Exploitation is limited by the CAS-only configuration gate, the UI:R requirement, and the absence of direct memory-safety or remote code execution impact. Default Syncope deployments not using CAS-based SRA authentication are not vulnerable.

Impact

The NVD CVSS score of 6.1 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N is well-calibrated for this class of vulnerability. SSVC assessment confirms Exploitation: none and Automatable: no, the latter because user interaction (UI:R) is required - a victim must follow or be socially-engineered into triggering the redirect. The primary real-world risk is credential phishing: an attacker who can inject headers into a victim's request (e.g. via MITM, misconfigured load balancer, or crafted link) can redirect the user to a lookalike CAS login page. The impact is bounded by the additional social engineering step and the configuration prerequisite (CAS auth must be enabled in SRA). There is no known KEV listing, no public PoC, and SSVC exploitation status is 'none', placing this firmly in the 'patch on normal cycle, prioritize if CAS is deployed' category rather than emergency response. The scope-changed (S:C) metric correctly reflects that the harm occurs in the browser/external system, not within Syncope itself.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can influence the HTTP headers received by Syncope SRA - for instance, via a malicious link embedding a crafted Forwarded or X-Forwarded-Host header value, or through a misconfigured intermediary proxy - sends a victim to the Syncope SRA CAS authentication endpoint. SRA computes the CAS redirect URL using the attacker-supplied header, bouncing the victim to a convincing Apereo CAS phishing page under attacker control. The victim, expecting the corporate SSO prompt, enters their credentials, which are captured by the attacker. No public PoC exists, so this scenario currently requires targeted, manual exploitation.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 15, 2026

Open redirect in Apache Syncope's SRA (Secure Remote Access) component allows unauthenticated network attackers to redirect authenticated users to attacker-controlled URLs during CAS SSO login flows. The vulnerability arises because Syncope SRA unconditionally trusts client-supplied forwarded HTTP headers (e.g. X-Forwarded-Host, X-Forwarded-Proto) when constructing the target Apereo CAS instance URL, enabling header-injection-based phishing attacks that can harvest credentials. Exploitation requires user interaction and the CAS authentication configuration to be active; no public exploit or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade Apache Syncope to version 4.0.8 (for the 4.0.x line) or 4.1.3 (for the 4.1.x line) per the Apache advisory at https://lists.apache.org/thread/vx9bons1znhdkdpsxwjpy6qqqjc8xqtk. No patched release is listed for the 3.0.x line, suggesting users should migrate to a supported release. As a workaround until patching is possible, configure the reverse proxy or load balancer in front of Syncope SRA to strip or overwrite X-Forwarded-Host, X-Forwarded-Proto, and Forwarded headers before they reach the application, ensuring only trusted infrastructure-set values are present. This workaround requires careful review of your proxy chain to avoid breaking legitimate header forwarding; if SRA is not exposed to untrusted networks, network-layer controls limiting access to internal clients reduce but do not eliminate risk.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Apache Syncope is an open-source enterprise Identity Management (IdM) platform; its SRA (Secure Remote Access) module acts as a gateway/proxy that integrates with external authentication providers including Apereo CAS (Central Authentication Service), a widely-used SSO protocol. The root cause (CWE-601: URL Redirection to Untrusted Site) stems from trusting untrusted, client-controlled HTTP forwarded headers - such as X-Forwarded-Host or Forwarded - to reconstruct the absolute URL of the upstream CAS server. This pattern is a classic trust-boundary violation: reverse proxies legitimately set these headers internally, but when the application unconditionally consumes them from external client requests, an attacker can supply arbitrary values. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_syncope and spans major version lines 3.0, 4.0, and 4.1.

DescriptionCVE.org

URL Redirection to Untrusted Site ('Open Redirect') vulnerability in Apache Syncope.

When the Syncope SRA is configured for CAS authentication, the target Apereo CAS instance's URL is calculated by unconditionally looking at client-supplied forwarded HTTP headers.

This issue affects Apache Syncope: from 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, from 4.0.0-M0 Through 4.0.7, from 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.2.

Users are recommended to upgrade to version 4.0.8 / 4.1.3, which fix this issue.
