| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation targets the AD FS role on Windows Server (2019 builds <10.0.17763.9376, 2022 <10.0.20348.5761, 2025 <10.0.26100.33650, including Server Core installations); the attacker must have network reachability to the AD FS federation endpoint, which in many deployments is internet-facing. No authentication is required (PR:N) and no user interaction (UI:N), but the HIGH attack complexity (AC:H) is the key LIMITING factor: the attacker must meet conditions outside their control - plausibly specific token/claim handling, timing, or server state during the weak authentication check - which the vendor description does not fully specify. Organizations not running the AD FS role, or already patched to the fixed builds, are not exposed. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity security feature bypass in Active Directory Federation Services (CVSS 5.9, CWE-1390 Weak Authentication). The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N indicates network-reachable, unauthenticated exploitation (PR:N) but with HIGH attack complexity (AC:H), meaning success depends on conditions outside the attacker's direct control - likely timing, specific token/claim handling, or a race or configuration-dependent state. Impact is scoped to integrity only (I:H, C:N/A:N), consistent with bypassing an authentication/security control rather than directly stealing data or causing outage. No EPSS score was provided in the input, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC is indicated - exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The high complexity meaningfully tempers the otherwise-attractive unauthenticated-network profile, so this is a real-but-not-urgent patching priority rather than a drop-everything issue. Note the signal gap: EPSS probability is absent from the input and cannot be weighed, so prioritization should lean on the AC:H constraint and the fact that AD FS is an internet-facing identity broker in many environments. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A remote, unauthenticated attacker who can reach an organization's AD FS endpoint crafts a request that abuses the weak authentication check to bypass an intended security control, gaining improperly validated authentication state. Because AD FS brokers single sign-on to downstream applications, a successful bypass could let the attacker assume a trust context they should not hold. The HIGH attack complexity means the attacker must satisfy specific conditions (e.g., precise request/token manipulation or a particular server state), and no public exploit code is known at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) on Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025 lets an unauthenticated network attacker bypass an authentication security feature, yielding a high integrity impact (CVSS 5.9, CWE-1390) with no credentials and no user interaction required. Exploitation depends on network reachability to the AD FS federation endpoint - which in many deployments is internet-facing - but the HIGH attack complexity (AC:H) means the attacker must also satisfy conditions outside their control, so reliable exploitation is difficult. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and vendor-released patches are available for every affected build (Windows Server 2019 10.0.17763.9376, 2022 10.0.20348.5761, 2025 10.0.26100.33650 and later, including Server Core installations).
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Windows Server 2019 10.0.17763.9376, Windows Server 2022 10.0.20348.5761, and Windows Server 2025 10.0.26100.33650 (apply the corresponding cumulative update for Server Core installations as well), per the Microsoft advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-70005. If patching must be staged, reduce exposure by no longer publishing the AD FS federation service directly: terminate extranet federation traffic through a Web Application Proxy (WAP) or reverse proxy that enforces pre-authentication, and block direct inbound access to the AD FS endpoints from the internet at the perimeter firewall (the /adfs/ls and /adfs/services/trust paths) - the trade-off is that remote and partner identity flows break until the proxy path is validated, and WAP must itself be patched. Where feasible, restrict source ranges that may reach AD FS to known partner/relying-party IPs, at the cost of losing the convenience of ubiquitous federation access, and alert on anomalous or unexpected token issuance and sign-in events during the window before the patch is applied. If the AD FS role is installed but unused, removing the role eliminates the exposed attack surface entirely.

Technical ContextAI · show details
AD FS is Microsoft's identity federation role on Windows Server, issuing and validating SAML/WS-Federation security tokens and claims so that relying-party applications trust identities from one or more identity providers. The flaw is classified CWE-1390 (Weak Authentication), a root-cause class covering authentication mechanisms that can be satisfied without genuinely proving identity - in this case the AD FS weak authentication check governing a security feature in the token/claim validation path. The CVSS:3.1 vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N indicates the defect is network-reachable, needs no prior authentication and no victim interaction, but demands conditions outside the attacker's control (AC:H) - plausibly specific token/claim structures, request timing, or server state during the authentication check, which Microsoft's description does not fully specify. Only integrity is impacted (I:H); confidentiality and availability are unaffected, consistent with a bypass that lets a request be treated as trusted rather than exposing or crashing data. CPE/advisory data scope exposure to the AD FS role on Windows Server 2019 (<10.0.17763.9376), Windows Server 2022 (<10.0.20348.5761), and Windows Server 2025 (<10.0.26100.33650), including Server Core variants; hosts without the AD FS role installed are not affected.
