| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a currently authenticated CTI-Transmute administrator with user-deletion privileges to visit attacker-controlled content (a webpage or HTML email) while holding an active browser session. The attacker requires no CTI-Transmute account, no credentials, and no network access to the server beyond being able to deliver content to the victim's browser. The critical limiting factor is mandatory administrator interaction - no exploitation is possible without a privileged user being socially engineered into visiting the malicious content. The vulnerability is present in the default application configuration; no special server-side feature flag or non-default setting is required. Exploitation scope is bounded by the victim's session: the attacker can only delete accounts that the administrator's own permissions allow, and only as long as the administrator's session remains valid. |
| Impact | The provided CVSS 4.0 score of 8.8 with metrics AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N is internally inconsistent with the vulnerability class: CSRF by definition requires user interaction (an authenticated victim must follow a crafted request), making UI:N incorrect - UI:P (passive) is the appropriate CVSS 4.0 value. This discrepancy likely inflates the score and should be verified with CIRCL. Correcting for UI:P would reduce the rating. No EPSS data was provided and no KEV listing was present, indicating no confirmed active exploitation at time of analysis. The VC:H metric in the provided vector (implying high confidentiality impact) is also inconsistent with the described impact - the vulnerability enables account deletion, which is an integrity impact, not a confidentiality breach. Real-world risk is moderate: exploitation requires social engineering a privileged administrator and is therefore not mass-exploitable or automatable, but the consequence of deleting the sole administrator account could cause a full administrative lockout of a CTI-Transmute instance. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker targeting a CTI-Transmute instance enumerates or guesses user account IDs through the application's admin interface or API, then embeds an invisible image tag or iframe in a phishing email pointing to the target instance's /account/delete/<id> endpoint. When a CTI-Transmute administrator with an active session opens the email or visits the attacker-controlled page, their browser silently issues a GET request to the deletion endpoint with the administrator's session cookie attached, causing the targeted account to be permanently deleted without any confirmation prompt. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, though the attack is trivial to reproduce given the simple GET-based trigger. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 03, 2026
Cross-site request forgery in CTI-Transmute's administrative user deletion endpoint enables unauthenticated remote attackers to delete arbitrary user accounts by inducing an authenticated administrator to follow a crafted link. The /account/delete/<id> endpoint accepted HTTP GET requests for an irreversible state-modifying operation, allowing any web page or email to silently trigger deletions using the victim's active session. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, though the attack requires no attacker credentials and depends solely on social engineering a logged-in administrator.
RemediationAI
Apply the upstream fix from commit 4f0d051ec5f1d45894c26987d409411728b2d82c (https://github.com/MISP/cti-transmute/commit/4f0d051ec5f1d45894c26987d409411728b2d82c), which restricts the /account/delete/<id> route to POST-only and adds CSRF token validation to the deletion form. No specific patched release version has been independently confirmed beyond the upstream commit - operators should pin to a revision at or after this commit. If immediate patching is not possible, restrict access to the CTI-Transmute administrative interface to trusted internal network segments or VPN, reducing the likelihood of an attacker delivering the forged request to an administrator's browser. Additionally, brief administrators to avoid clicking unsolicited external links while authenticated; however, this is a behavioral control with low reliability and not a substitute for patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details
CTI-Transmute (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:misp:cti-transmute:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a MISP-ecosystem tool for Cyber Threat Intelligence data transformation built on a Python web framework (Flask, given the csrf_token() Jinja2 template helper). CWE-352 (Cross-Site Request Forgery) arises here because the /account/delete/<id> route was registered with methods=['GET', 'POST'], making a state-modifying deletion triggerable by a simple browser navigation - no POST body or CSRF token was required. Since browsers automatically attach session cookies to cross-origin GET requests, any third-party page could silently invoke the deletion endpoint on behalf of a logged-in administrator. The commit diff at 4f0d051ec5f confirms the fix: the route is restricted to POST-only and the deletion form now embeds a CSRF token via Flask-WTF's csrf_token() helper, requiring the token to be present and valid for the operation to proceed.

DescriptionCVE.org
CTI-Transmute contained a cross-site request forgery vulnerability in the administrative user deletion functionality. The /account/delete/<id> endpoint accepted HTTP GET requests for an operation that modified application state.
An unauthenticated remote attacker could construct a malicious link or embed a request targeting this endpoint and induce an authenticated CTI-Transmute administrator to visit the attacker-controlled content. If the administrator had an active session, the browser would automatically include the administrator’s session credentials, causing the selected user account to be deleted without the administrator intentionally confirming the operation.
Successful exploitation requires interaction from a currently authenticated administrator who has permission to delete users. The attacker does not need a CTI-Transmute account or administrative privileges because the forged request executes using the victim administrator’s session.
The vulnerability could allow an attacker to delete arbitrary user accounts, resulting in unauthorized modification of application state and denial of access for affected users. Depending on whether administrators can delete other administrators or the final administrative account, exploitation could also disrupt administration of the CTI-Transmute instance.
The patch resolves the issue by restricting the deletion endpoint to HTTP POST requests and submitting the deletion through a form containing a CSRF token.
Executive ViewAI
CTI-Transmute contains a vulnerability that enables attackers to delete administrator accounts through phishing attacks against logged-in admins, potentially disrupting access management and organizational operations. No attacker credentials or system access are required-a malicious link is sufficient to irreversibly remove critical accounts. This CVSS 8.8 vulnerability requires urgent patching to prevent access control breaches.
