| Exploitation Conditions | The attacker must be an authenticated Cyrus IMAP DAV user (PR:L) and must already hold some form of shared access to the target user's calendar (CalDAV) or address book (CardDAV) - for example, a free/busy grant or a partially shared sub-collection. Exploitation is not possible without this pre-existing sharing relationship, which is the primary limiting factor. The attacker must also know or be able to guess/enumerate the hrefs of the specific calendar objects or contacts they wish to retrieve. The CalDAV/CardDAV service must be enabled and reachable over the network (AV:N). Exploitation is strictly read-only (C:L only); no write, administrative, or system-level access is achievable through this path. Deployments that do not use CalDAV/CardDAV sharing are not exposed. |
| Impact | The provided CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N yields a base score of 3.5, which accurately captures several real-world constraints. AC:H is justified because the attacker must already hold some form of sharing access to the victim's calendar or address book - exploitation is impossible without a prior sharing relationship. PR:L reflects that the attacker must be an authenticated DAV user. Impact is limited to confidentiality of calendar or contact data (C:L), with no integrity or availability consequence. The S:C scope change is meaningful - the security boundary between user accounts is crossed. No EPSS score was provided in the input; KEV status is absent, and no public exploit code has been identified. In practice, the blast radius per successful exploit is narrow: an attacker learns private calendar events or contact details of one specific victim with whom they share partial DAV access. This is a real privacy risk in environments with active calendar sharing (enterprises, academic institutions) but is far from a system-compromise scenario. The 'Authentication Bypass' tag is a mislabel - this is an authorization/ACL bypass on an alternate protocol path, not an authentication bypass. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user who has been granted free/busy read access to a colleague's shared calendar crafts a calendar-multiget REPORT XML body containing hrefs of private appointment objects in that colleague's calendar - hrefs they may have guessed, enumerated from a previous partial disclosure, or obtained via another channel. The Cyrus IMAP server processes the multiget request without performing per-href ACL checks and returns the full iCalendar objects, exposing private meeting details, attendee lists, or sensitive notes. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. |

Cyrus IMAP before 3.12.4 exposes private calendar events and contacts to partially-privileged authenticated users through a broken ACL enforcement path in the CalDAV/CardDAV multiget REPORT handler. An attacker who already holds some shared DAV access to a target user's calendar or address book can include hrefs of unshared resources in a calendar-multiget or addressbook-multiget REPORT request, causing the server to return those resources without enforcing per-href access controls. The vulnerability is fixed across the 3.8, 3.10, and 3.12 release branches; no public exploit or CISA KEV listing has been identified.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Cyrus IMAP to the appropriate fixed release for your deployed branch: 3.12.4, 3.10.4, or 3.8.8. Release notes are available at the vendor site (https://cyrusimap.org). If immediate patching is not feasible, administrators can disable CalDAV and CardDAV sharing entirely to eliminate the attack surface, at the cost of removing collaborative calendar and contact features. As a narrower workaround, audit and revoke all existing DAV sharing grants so that no user holds partial access to another user's collections - this closes the exploitation precondition (the attacker must already have some shared access) while preserving the service. Restricting DAV endpoint access to trusted network segments reduces exposure but does not eliminate the vulnerability for users on trusted networks.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Cyrus IMAP is an open-source IMAP/LMTP server that also implements CalDAV (RFC 4791) and CardDAV (RFC 6352) for calendar and contact synchronization. The multiget REPORT request type is a standard DAV mechanism allowing clients to bulk-retrieve calendar objects or vCard entries by specifying a list of hrefs in a single XML request body. The root cause is CWE-420 (Unprotected Alternate Channel): the multiget code path processes hrefs without invoking the same per-href ACL checks that protect individual resource retrieval. Because CalDAV/CardDAV sharing grants access at the collection level but the ACL model enforces finer-grained per-resource permissions, the multiget shortcut effectively sidesteps those finer controls. The CVSS S:C (Scope Changed) metric reflects that successful exploitation crosses the DAV sharing security boundary between two distinct user accounts. No CPE strings were provided in the input data; affected versions are derived solely from the vendor release notes.

An issue was discovered in Cyrus IMAP before 3.12.4. CalDAV/CardDAV multiget bypasses a per-href ACL. An authenticated DAV user with some shared access to another user's calendar or address book could read even unshared events or contacts by including the target hrefs in a calendar-multiget or addressbook-multiget REPORT.
