Exploitation Conditions

Requires the caller to reach the POST /batch-to-vault HTTP endpoint (present since 1.6.0) or the batch_to_vault MCP tool (since 1.7.0) and to control the vault_dir and/or slug_prefix values. Exploitation is UNLIMITED by containment in default deployments because vault confinement only activates when NOTEBOOKLM_VAULT_ROOT is set, which is unset by default. Limiting factors: CVSS PR:L implies some access/authentication to the service, the vendor recommends binding the HTTP endpoint to localhost (reducing remote reach), and in the MCP path an attacker must influence an LLM that is processing untrusted content into invoking the tool with malicious paths. Affects versions 1.6.0 through 2.0.2; fixed in 2.0.3.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity path traversal (CWE-22) rated 7.1 by the vendor under CVSS 4.0 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:N), with impact confined to integrity - the flaw enables arbitrary file WRITE (Markdown/JSON) to any location writable by the server process, not disclosure. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public exploit code is present in the provided intelligence, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active or automatable exploitation. The single reference is the GitHub Security Advisory (GHSA-jjhp-8crj-mppq) that assigned the CVE. The real-world priority is TEMPERED by product footprint (an obscure open-source MCP integration tool) and by exploitation prerequisites: the CVSS PR:L indicates the caller must be at least a low-privileged/authenticated actor, and the vendor explicitly recommends limiting the HTTP endpoint to localhost. One conflicting signal worth noting: the vendor scored availability as VA:N, yet arbitrary file write to any server-writable path could plausibly overwrite critical files (config, code) and escalate to code execution or denial of service - verify with the vendor whether the integrity-only scoring understates real impact. Net: a legitimate flaw worth patching for anyone running this tool, but not a broad-fleet emergency given low prevalence and no exploitation evidence.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An actor able to reach the localhost-exposed HTTP service, or an LLM coaxed into calling the batch_to_vault MCP tool while processing untrusted content, supplies a vault_dir or slug_prefix containing traversal sequences (e.g. ../../). The server writes generated Markdown/JSON outside the intended vault to any path it can write - for example overwriting a cron job, startup script, or application config to achieve tampering or code execution. No public proof-of-concept is identified in the provided data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026

Arbitrary file write through a path traversal flaw affects NotebookLM MCP versions 1.6.0 through 2.0.2, allowing an authenticated caller of the POST /batch-to-vault endpoint - or, since 1.7.0, of the batch_to_vault MCP tool - to steer generated Markdown and JSON files outside the intended vault into any directory writable by the server process. The vendor rates it 7.1 under CVSS 4.0, and the independent assessment confirms integrity-only impact (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N): files can be written but not read or deleted through this vector. Containment only activates when NOTEBOOKLM_VAULT_ROOT is set, so default deployments are fully exposed, and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV listing.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 2.0.3. Upgrading to NotebookLM MCP 2.0.3 is the primary fix, and after upgrading NOTEBOOKLM_VAULT_ROOT must also be explicitly set, because containment is not applied when that variable is unset - leaving it unset negates the containment half of the fix in default deployments. If upgrading is not immediately possible, run the server as a dedicated unprivileged account whose filesystem permissions are restricted to the intended vault directory (this limits write blast radius but does not stop writes inside the account's reachable paths), bind the HTTP endpoint to localhost so only local callers can reach POST /batch-to-vault (trade-off: remote/containerized integrations lose access), and validate or reject vault_dir and slug_prefix values that reach the tool from LLMs processing untrusted content (trade-off: requires wrapping or proxying the MCP tool call path, since the server itself does not sanitize these inputs before 2.0.3). There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the write primitive is straightforward, so treat exposure as urgent. See https://github.com/roomi-fields/notebooklm-mcp/security/advisories/GHSA-jjhp-8crj-mppq for the vendor guidance.

Technical ContextAI · show details

NotebookLM MCP is a Model Context Protocol server plus HTTP service that talks to Google NotebookLM and exports generated content into local vault directories. The vulnerable path is the export pipeline: the POST /batch-to-vault HTTP route (present since 1.6.0) and the equivalent batch_to_vault MCP tool (added in 1.7.0) accept caller-supplied vault_dir and slug_prefix values and use them to build output filenames under the vault. Because slug_prefix was not sanitized - and because vault_dir was not verified against a configured root - traversal sequences or absolute paths let a caller escape the intended directory and write Markdown and JSON anywhere the server process has write permission. This is a classic CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory) case: the fix in 2.0.3 sanitizes slug_prefix and enforces vault containment, but that containment check is gated on the NOTEBOOKLM_VAULT_ROOT environment variable, which is unset by default, so unconfigured installs remain unconfined even conceptually. The MCP path adds an indirect exploitation angle: when the server processes untrusted content, an attacker who can influence the driving LLM may get the tool invoked with a malicious path.

DescriptionCVE.org

NotebookLM MCP is an MCP server and HTTP service for interacting with Google NotebookLM and exporting generated content to local vault directories. Versions 1.6.0 through 2.0.2 contain a path traversal vulnerability in the POST /batch-to-vault endpoint, also exposed through the batch_to_vault MCP tool beginning in version 1.7.0, because attacker-controlled vault_dir and slug_prefix values can cause Markdown and JSON files to be written outside the intended vault directory to any location writable by the server process. Version 2.0.3 sanitizes slug_prefix and supports vault containment when NOTEBOOKLM_VAULT_ROOT is configured; containment is not enabled if that variable is unset. Users unable to upgrade should run the server as a dedicated unprivileged account restricted to the intended vault, keep the HTTP endpoint limited to localhost, and validate vault_dir values supplied by LLMs processing untrusted content.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

NotebookLM MCP versions 1.6.0 through 2.0.2 carry an unpatched path traversal flaw that allows an authenticated user of the /batch-to-vault endpoint or the batch_to_vault MCP tool to write generated Markdown and JSON files into any directory the server process can reach, not just the intended vault. Containment depends entirely on the NOTEBOOKLM_VAULT_ROOT setting, so default deployments are fully exposed and the integrity of the host filesystem is at risk. Leadership should care because a trusted integration account could be used to plant unauthorized files on production servers, and no vendor fix exists today.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: set NOTEBOOKLM_VAULT_ROOT to a dedicated directory so containment activates; run the service as a least-privilege account with write access limited to that vault; disable or network-restrict the POST /batch-to-vault endpoint and the batch_to_vault MCP tool; restrict the service to trusted, authenticated clients only; and deploy file integrity monitoring on writable directories to detect unauthorized writes.
