| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to occupy a privileged man-in-the-middle position on the network path between the Remote Desktop client and server (reflected by AC:H), and requires a victim to actually initiate an RDP session (UI:R) - it is not a self-contained remote trigger against an idle listener. The flaw lies in Windows Remote Desktop's use of a broken/risky cryptographic algorithm, so the security-feature protection it undermines is only meaningful for RDP traffic that relies on that algorithm; deployments enforcing stronger transport protections (e.g., TLS-pinned/NLA-hardened or VPN-tunneled RDP) and network segmentation that denies on-path positioning substantially limit realistic exploitation. No privileges on the target are needed (PR:N), but the on-path requirement plus user interaction are the key limiting factors. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity (CVSS 6.8) security feature bypass in Windows Remote Desktop rooted in a weak/broken cryptographic algorithm (CWE-327). The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) tells a consistent story: although the attacker needs no privileges (PR:N), exploitation is gated by High attack complexity (AC:H) and required user interaction (UI:R), which together point to a man-in-the-middle / interception scenario where the attacker must already hold a privileged network position and a victim must initiate an RDP session. The high Confidentiality and Integrity impact (C:H/I:H) with no Availability impact is typical of a crypto bypass that lets an attacker decrypt or tamper with the session rather than crash the service. On real-world prioritization signals there is NO EPSS score, NO CISA KEV listing, and NO public POC provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active or imminent exploitation - exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are therefore internally consistent (no high-CVSS-but-obviously-overstated conflict), but the combination of AC:H + UI:R materially lowers practical risk below what the 6.8 base score alone suggests: this is a defense-in-depth/MITM-class issue, not a mass-exploitable RCE. Note one metadata caveat: the 'Authentication Bypass' tag is narrower than the description's generic 'security feature bypass' and should be verified against the Microsoft advisory before treating this strictly as an auth bypass. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker positioned on the network path (e.g., via ARP spoofing or rogue gateway on a shared/corporate LAN) waits for a user to initiate a Remote Desktop connection, then exploits the weak cryptographic algorithm to defeat an RDP security protection and intercept or tamper with the session, exposing credentials or session data. The high attack complexity reflects the need for that privileged on-path position plus a victim connection (UI:R). No public exploit code was identified in the provided data. |

Security feature bypass in Windows Remote Desktop allows an on-path attacker who occupies a privileged man-in-the-middle position between an RDP client and server to defeat protections that depend on a broken or risky cryptographic algorithm (CWE-327), potentially exposing the confidentiality and integrity of the session. Exploitation is not a self-contained remote trigger: the victim must actually initiate an RDP session (UI:R) and the attacker must already sit on the network path (AC:H), although no credentials on the target are required (PR:N), which is reflected in the CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.8. Microsoft has released fixes for the affected Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server builds, and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the Microsoft cumulative update that raises each affected build to at least the fixed revision listed in the MSRC update guide (https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-59116) - for example 10.0.20348.5386 for Windows Server 2022, 10.0.26100.8875 for Windows 11 24H2, 10.0.26100.33158 for Windows Server 2025, 10.0.17763.9020 for Windows Server 2019, 10.0.14393.9339 for Windows Server 2016/Windows 10 1607, and 6.3.9600.23291 / 6.2.9200.26226 for Windows Server 2012 R2 / 2012; this is the only complete fix, and in-period legacy platforms should be migrated because older branches have limited servicing. Because the defect is a weak-cryptography issue that is only exploitable by an attacker already on the network path, the highest-value compensating controls are those that remove that position or force stronger transport protection: enforce Network Level Authentication and require the TLS security layer on RDP endpoints via Group Policy ('Require use of specific security layer for remote (RDP) connections' set to SSL/TLS and 'Require user authentication for remote connections by using Network Level Authentication'), understanding that this breaks legacy clients and third-party RDP shims that cannot negotiate CredSSP/TLS; and restrict RDP (TCP/3389 and UDP/3389) to management VLANs or VPN/jump-host access so that an unprivileged host cannot achieve the on-path position the attack requires, at the cost of added operational friction for remote administration. Where RDP exposure is not essential, disabling the Remote Desktop service or the affected listener removes the attack surface entirely, and additionally reviewing which environment still relies on legacy 'RDP standard security' encryption and eliminating it wherever possible reduces the residual value of this bypass; note that no vendor workaround short of patching fully restores the undermined security feature, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, so prioritization should follow normal Microsoft patch-cycle urgency rather than emergency response.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is rooted in CWE-327, 'Use of a Broken or Risky Cryptographic Algorithm', inside the Windows Remote Desktop (RDP) stack. RDP negotiates a transport security layer for each connection - legacy 'RDP standard security' encryption, CredSSP/NLA, or TLS - and a security feature that is meant to protect session traffic is undermined when a weak or deprecated algorithm is accepted or negotiated. Because the algorithm is cryptographically broken, the protection it is supposed to provide can be bypassed rather than brute-forced, giving an attacker with visibility into RDP traffic the ability to bypass that control; this is why the vector shows High confidentiality and integrity impact but no availability impact. The assessed vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) indicates the attack is network-reachable but with high complexity, driven by the requirement to achieve an on-path position and to have a user start an RDP session; no privileges on the target are needed, and the scope remains unchanged. The affected surface is the shared Remote Desktop component shipped across the entire supported Windows servicing tree, so the same defect affects Windows 10 (1607, 1809, 21H2, 22H2), Windows 11 (23H2, 24H2, 25H2, 26H1) and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025, including Server Core installations, with fixes distributed as per-branch cumulative updates (for example, build 10.0.20348.5386 for Windows Server 2022 and 10.0.26100.8875 for Windows 11 24H2 as the first non-vulnerable revisions in the vendor data).
