MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Zammad agent account holding the ticket.agent permission but lacking access to the target knowledge base category/answer (e.g. an internal answer). The attacker must reach the GraphQL 'KnowledgeBase::Answer::Suggestion::Content::Transform' mutation and supply the translationId of an answer outside their KB permissions. Exploitation is limited by the need for valid agent credentials, knowledge of a valid translation/answer ID, and applies only to Zammad instances before 7.0.2 that use the knowledge base feature with category-level access restrictions; impact is confined to disclosure of KB answer text. |
| Impact | This is a low-priority, low-real-risk issue despite being a genuine authorization flaw. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:P/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) scores only 2.1, and every signal points to limited impact: the only consequence is confidentiality of knowledge-base answer content (VC:L), with no integrity or availability effect. Exploitation requires an already-authenticated agent account (PR:L) plus an attack requirement (AT:P) and passive user interaction (UI:P), and the leaked data is internal helpdesk KB text rather than credentials or PII. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit in the provided data - consistent with 'no public exploit identified.' The one clear data-quality issue is the 'Authentication Bypass' tag: the root cause (CWE-862, a missing authorization check on the KB answer while ticket.agent permission is still verified) is an authorization bypass by an already-authenticated user, not an authentication bypass. No conflicting access-vector signals exist - the GraphQL mutation is genuinely network-reachable, matching AV:N. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A logged-in Zammad agent who has the ticket.agent permission but lacks access to a restricted/internal knowledge base category calls the GraphQL 'transform' mutation, passing the translationId of an answer they should not be able to read. Because the mutation only checked ticket.agent and resolved the object with verified_object_from_id (no per-object authorization), the server returns the transformed answer content. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis; exploitation is trivial for any agent who can enumerate or guess answer/translation IDs. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Authenticated Zammad agents holding the ticket.agent permission can read knowledge base answer content they are not authorized to access by invoking the KnowledgeBase::Answer::Suggestion::Content::Transform GraphQL mutation with a translation ID outside their KB category permissions. This low-severity authorization bypass affects Zammad versions prior to 7.0.2 and requires the attacker to know a valid translation ID; it is fixed in 7.0.2 and no public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Zammad 7.0.2. Apply the fix from commit b059bd1cac36b1eab04cfc0783799e38b8072da7 or deploy the 7.0.2 release as documented at https://github.com/zammad/zammad/releases/tag/7.0.2 and https://github.com/zammad/zammad/security/advisories/GHSA-pf47-8964-pp23. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict knowledge base category permissions so that agents with the ticket.agent permission cannot access sensitive KB answers, or temporarily disable the knowledge base feature if it is not operationally required. Monitor GraphQL logs for calls to the KnowledgeBase::Answer::Suggestion::Content::Transform mutation. Note that restricting KB permissions may reduce agent functionality, and disabling the knowledge base removes self-service content for customers. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified, so prioritization can follow standard patch cycles.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability resides in Zammad's GraphQL API, specifically the KnowledgeBase::Answer::Suggestion::Content::Transform mutation, which is designed to transform a knowledge base answer suggestion so it can be inserted into the ticket editor. The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the mutation used verified_object_from_id to resolve the KnowledgeBase::Answer::Translation object, checking only that the object exists and is of the correct type, rather than authorized_object_from_id, which would also verify the current user's access to that specific knowledge base answer. This means the mutation enforced only the ticket.agent permission and omitted any check against the knowledge base category-level access controls. The upstream fix, commit b059bd1cac36b1eab04cfc0783799e38b8072da7, replaces the verification call with an authorization call that passes the current user context. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:zammad:zammad:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers all affected versions, and exploitation is limited to Zammad instances before 7.0.2 that use the knowledge base feature with category-level restrictions.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Zammad is a web based open source helpdesk/customer support system. Prior to 7.0.2, an authorization bypass vulnerability was found that allows an authenticated agent to read knowledge base answer content they should not be able to access. The vulnerable GraphQL mutation is meant to transform a knowledge base answer suggestion so it can be inserted into the ticket editor, but it only checks if the user has the ticket.agent permission. Checking the authorization to the knowledge base answer itself is missing. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.0.2.
