Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated Zammad user holding limited knowledge-base permissions (e.g., an agent with only read/editor-scoped access) on a Zammad instance older than 7.0.2 that uses the Knowledge Base feature. The flaw is reachable via the knowledge_base/answer attachments controller endpoints (create/destroy/clone_to_form), where the old policy authorized broadly by role ('knowledge_base.editor'/'knowledge_base.*') instead of validating the specific answer's access scope. Limiting factors: valid low-privilege account needed (not fully unauthenticated), impact confined to knowledge-base answer attachments, and the fix restricts create/destroy to answer update rights and clone_to_form to answer show rights.

Impact

This is an authorization/access-control flaw (CWE-639, insecure direct object reference on knowledge-base answer IDs) rather than a memory-corruption or RCE issue. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N, base 7.1) indicates network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation by an already-authenticated low-privilege user with no user interaction. There is NO EPSS score, NO CISA KEV listing, and NO public exploit code in the provided data, so this is not a confirmed-exploited emergency - it is a moderate-severity broken-access-control bug fixed in a routine release. I disagree with the NVD's VC:H rating: the fixed endpoints (create/destroy attachments tied to answer_policy.update?, clone_to_form tied to answer_policy.show?) expose knowledge-base answer attachments - limited internal helpdesk content - and also permit unauthorized modification (add/remove attachments), so the real impact is closer to Confidentiality:Low plus Integrity:Low rather than a single high-confidentiality impact. Net: a legitimate priority to patch for Zammad operators, but not a high-real-risk internet-wide threat.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated Zammad agent with only limited/read knowledge-base permissions enumerates knowledge-base answer IDs and calls the answer attachments controller endpoints, whose policy previously granted access broadly to 'knowledge_base.editor'/'knowledge_base.*' instead of validating per-answer scope. The attacker thereby views (clone_to_form) or modifies (add/remove) attachments on knowledge-base answers outside their assigned access scope. No public exploit code is identified, but the fix commit and policy spec make the flaw and access path clear.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

Zammad versions prior to 7.0.2 contain an insecure direct object reference (CWE-639) in the knowledge base answer attachment endpoints, allowing an authenticated user with limited knowledge-base permissions to create, delete, or clone attachments on answers outside their assigned access scope. The flaw stems from controller policies that authorized actions broadly by role rather than validating the specific answer object, so an agent (or similarly scoped user) could reach attachments they should not be able to modify or even see. The vendor fixed the issue in 7.0.2 by delegating authorization to the per-answer policy; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the impact is confined to the confidentiality and integrity of knowledge base attachments rather than code execution or availability.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Zammad 7.0.2 or later, which contains the vendor-released patch; the exact fix is the commit 13ccc136e527adcab705ca8a3b2fb9ffc0cecddc that replaces the broad role-based policy with per-answer authorization (AnswerPolicy#update? for create/destroy and #show? for clone_to_form). Plan the upgrade via the official 7.0.2 release (https://github.com/zammad/zammad/releases/tag/7.0.2) and consult advisory GHSA-pv3q-74g5-w7fv for vendor guidance. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls include restricting Knowledge Base editing rights to the smallest possible set of trusted roles and disabling the Knowledge Base feature entirely for installations that do not use it, since both reduce the number of accounts able to exercise the IDOR; note that neither removes the underlying flaw and role trimming can disrupt legitimate agent workflows. Because exploitation requires a valid low-privilege account, tightening account provisioning and monitoring knowledge base attachment create/delete activity for unexpected answer IDs can provide additional detection, though these are detective rather than preventive measures.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Zammad is a Ruby on Rails based helpdesk and customer support platform whose Knowledge Base feature stores answers with file attachments. The affected code lives in app/controllers/knowledge_base/answer/attachments_controller.rb, where a before_action fetch_answer simply loaded KnowledgeBase::Answer.find params[:answer_id] using an attacker-controllable identifier, and the accompanying policy (app/policies/controllers/knowledge_base/answer/attachments_controller_policy.rb) authorized requests with broad role grants such as permit! :clone_to_form, to: 'knowledge_base.*' and default_permit!('knowledge_base.editor'). Because the object-level check against the specific answer's own access scope was never performed, the create, destroy, and clone_to_form actions were reachable for answers the caller could not legitimately manage - a textbook CWE-639 authorization bypass through user-controlled key. The fix rewrites the policy so create? and destroy? delegate to KnowledgeBase::AnswerPolicy#update? and clone_to_form? delegates to #show?, while the controller memoizes the answer as a private helper. The advisory's language about 'data validation for linked items was not fully enforced' maps directly to this missing object-level authorization, and the affected CPE cpe:2.3:a:zammad:zammad:* reflects that all pre-7.0.2 releases are in scope.

DescriptionCVE.org

Zammad is a web based open source helpdesk/customer support system. Prior to 7.0.2, summary An issue with permission checks in the knowledge base management area has been identified. Under certain conditions, data validation for linked items was not fully enforced. This could have allowed users with limited read permissions to interact with items outside their assigned access scope. Data access has been strengthened in the current version through additional validation routines. This issue is fixed in version 7.0.2.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Zammad deployments running versions prior to 7.0.2 carry an authorization flaw in the knowledge base answer attachment endpoints, allowing users with limited knowledge-base permissions to create, delete, or clone attachments on answers outside their assigned access scope. The exposure is confined to the confidentiality and integrity of knowledge base attachments rather than code execution or service availability, but those attachments frequently contain sensitive internal documentation, procedures, and customer-facing material that should be restricted by role. Leadership should care because the flaw undermines the access boundaries the organization relies on to protect that content, and it can be exercised by an already-provisioned low-privilege account without any public exploit code identified at time of analysis.

Business Impact: Medium
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis per patch status, although the advisory describes remediation in Zammad 7.0.2, so upgrade to 7.0.2 as the primary fix. Until the upgrade is complete, restrict knowledge-base attachment create, delete, and clone capabilities to a minimal set of trusted administrators, remove or downgrade unnecessary limited knowledge-base roles, monitor and alert on attachment operations performed by accounts outside their assigned answer scope, and review knowledge base attachment content and version history for unauthorized modification or disclosure.
